View Full Version : Two Flat Tires

Ok, does anyone know how the hell both tires would go flat on a brand new bike?

I've only had the bike for a week. I went to get something out of the shed, and I noticed both tires went flat, and of course, pumping them up does no good.

I've made sure that I don't go over 85PSI (the max stated on the tires), and I don't do any fancy crap on it, save for hitting the occasional bump kind of hard, but that's sometimes unavoidable.

What the hell could've caused this? I recall my other bike doing this to me before, too.

did you pull out the inner tubes to see the problem? was it actually a puncture, or was it perhaps bad seals on valve stems--i.e. a bad batch of tubes??

what kind of bike do you have? 85 psi seems really high unless it's a road bike.

are the tires fine, or is there damage along the side wall?

Yeah, it's a road bike.

The tires seem to be fine, I haven't checked the tubes or anything as it was 10:30PM when I noticed it.

My dad bought the exact same bike, and his are fine. Although, I don't think he's actually used his outside of the driveway, yet.

well, if it's a road bike, then 85 seems on the low side actually.

i don't know what your body weight is, but a low psi and a heavy body weight might be producing pinch flats

typical tire pressure for road bikes are well over 100psi

Well, the tires on it are 700C x 28 (Something like that), and the tires say the max is 85.

It's not gradually going flat, as the tires were hard last time I took it out, and I checked it out last night and they were flat, and if yuo attempt to pump them up, the air just goes back out (nowhere near the valve, though), and like I said, worse thing I've really done to it is gone down Joseph street (cowpath).

time to get out your tire levers and take the tubes out for an inspection.

nothing else will resolve your problem--everything will be guesswork without doing this legwork.

it could be anything at this point.

depending on how well your rims were made (i have no idea, it could be a decent roadbike, it may not be), they may have forgotten to put a rim strip, or put it on haphazardly, thus exposing your tube to the spoke nipple heads

you need to get the tubes out and examine them

Got new tubes in. We figured out what happened.

The valves on the original tubes were regular as opposed to what high pressure tires usually have (I forget the name). Of course, both tubes leaked near the valve. The one that was on the original tubes was the same as what you'd find on a mountain bike.

schrader vs presta valves

not really sure that was your problem--i think schraders can handle well over 100psi

more likely just bad seal of valve stem to tube (i think that was like the first thing i mentioned, eh?)

glad you found it--basic bike maintenance is a worthwhile skill set to learn

Of course, just because I got it fixed, it's supposed to piss outside for the rest of the week.

Be glad they didn't explode on you while going downhill. That could have been a mess. Always inspect your tires before a ride.

nails or glass?
