Hi guys I have a question..
I know a girl whose brother and friend both got an iPhone from NYC and are currently using them here in Canada.
Does anyone know how this is possible?
Facts which I must lay out
1) the sim card is removable
2) the iphone still works without the simcard but it will not make calls
3) a simcard different from the one placed in the iphone will not work as a replacement

It's called roaming. The phone is roaming in Canada much like how your cell phone would roam in the US or other countries. Thier provider is still AT&T.

Also, I heard somewhere you can't roam for more than 2 months internationally on the iPhone. If you do it deactivates.

Apparently, the amazing code wizards at the iPhone Dev Wiki have been able to partially unlock the iPhone using a new application called iASign. It won't fully unlock the iPhone for use with other companies, but the hack will allow you to use any existing Cingular/AT&T Pre-paid/MVNA SIM so you don't have to get a two-year contract with AT&T.

That is correct..still can't use it with a canadian carrier though.
My sources tell me it'll be awhile before the iPhone is offered in Canada though he won't say much else about it.
