My contract is up and I'm looking for a good hi-speed retention plan. My area is new so Bell (and any of their DSL reseller) doesn't provide service in my area so I'm stuck with Rogers.

sticking with them is a must, but I want a lower price. Raw speed is nothing when they throttle my BT to 10K/sec.

lol...I guess you got CIA Cable as well as a choice. Speeds are fine for me, but customer service is terrible. Also, no BT throttling as well!

CIA = 3Web? Do I really need to care about their customer service? i.e. is there a need to deal with them?

Ok, I called Rogers customer relation again, and they offered me $4 off a month for 12 months and $3 off for 24 months, but only on a 1-year contract... I just took it.

Also got another 3-month of free homephone.

I was offered 20% off (from 47.95 rogers express). 1st month free. But this is what got me wondering: there is a one year 'verbal commitment'?!! The rep said as long as I give 30 days notice before cancelling, I won't have any penalty even if it is before the end of the one-year 'verbal' commitment.... WTH is that? I asked her couple times if there are any hidden charges/penalty/reverse credit, she said very firmly 'NO',

Any experience out there? Should I take it?

Do you know what is the 'verbal' 1 yr commitment? Is it really true there is no penalty even if you cancel?

They actually offered 20% off for me before, but they said it will replace the 15% bundle discount I am getting, so that means I only get a 5% extra discount.... which is less than $4 off I'm getting now.
Is it the same for you guys, or you guys are not on bundle discount?

I only had to give 30 days notice and there was no penalty after cancelling the service in less than one year.
Can't comment on whether you should take their present offer. But if you are able to wait, maybe you'll get better deals closer to September (BTS deals)?

most deals are for new customers only though...as a 'loyal' customers, we got nothing competitive.

So you actually 'verbally' committed a year. But no actual penalty after your 30 days notice cancel before the year??

I met a guy in store. He gave me 3 months free, then regular price. No commitment, only 30 day notice. I signed up for express service only. In addition I have my own modem and he said that i could getthem to add that modem back to the database to use. Anyone want to take a bet that this will not work?

This is actually a known deal. It is legitimate. You can get it from futureshop.

well 3 months free homephone service is for anybody who signs up for rogers homephone whether u had it before or not, but usually they ask for the "1 year verbal agreement" from people to cancle it but yes, you can cancle it but depends on what kind of customer service agent you get the penalty might be vary, and as long as the hidden fees, only thing u will be paying during that 3 months "free homephone" is $ 4.50 system access fee which you pay in any other homephone provider, and for the internet, it varies depending on how fast your internet is, starting from ultra light, light, express, and extreme

Use uTorrent and enable encryption to get pass torrent throttling.

I managed to get $10 off for 12 months a few days ago.

Proper DSL is not available in my area but Rogers doesn't know that. I told them I was going to switch to DSL and they gave me 20% off for 12 months. Now I pay about 48/month after taxes for Extreme speed.

Apparently it's not that easy. There are reports saying Rogers detect encrypted content and slow them down as well.

However, recently I'm having good speed with Bitcomet.

'Sorry I didn't see your question until today (when I first joined RFD, I used to get notifications by email if someone posted in the forum where I participated, but maybe they've discontinued this practice?).

Anyway, I wasn't charged any penalty, but this was last April. They could have changed their policy unless it's only for the Home Phone service since the offer I got yesterday was for a Free Home Phone for the first 6 months and only pay SAF, 911, taxes at $5.60 if this is bundled with High Speed; however, the caller said the amount of the discount will have to be paid back to Rogers if the service is cancelled before the expiry of the contract, up to a maximum of $100. She made an effort not to call it a "penalty" ;)
