Heading out to NYC over the long weekend. Will only have 1 full day in NYC (and one evening and early morning), so looking for suggestions on things to do in the day and means of doing it (i.e. is the subway day pass worth getting or is there a better means about travelling? and landmarks worthwhile seeing on such a short time frame).

Thanks for the help!

Subway pass is the best way.

Go to south end, battery park.
From there u can see financial district, wall street, etc.
china town and little Italy.

then work your way north.

Another awesome way to get around and see the sights is one of the hop on hop off tours. More expensive than the subway, but you get to check everything out from the top of a double decker open air bus, there's a tour guide. It also very frequent and has many stops. I've done this twice when visiting nyc. Highly recommended.

I took one of those "hop on hop off" tours last year when I was in NYC for a day. It cost $45 USD a person and included free parking. I believe the tour company was Gray Line.

Had a pretty good experience with them and the busses were pretty frequent.

It was taken from the Empire State Building. The Lack of wire makes me think that he didn't take that photo. It was likely taken from above the public deck.

Any suggestions if I am looking to buy GPS or camera there? I will be travelling there soon as well.

Amazing pano!

As for buying GPS... I recommend the Garmin Nuvi 350. Not sure how much you can save, but I took my GPS on a driving trip to NYC and works like a charm. Drove to Florida and worked like a charm... I missed a bunch of exits during the trips and it just recalculates. Text to voice is amazing. It's so good you can rely on it alone if you want. :-)

It works periodically on a plane too! Pretty cool!

subway in NYC is great,

Head down to Rockefeller center the view from up there is amazing, just as good if not better then the empire state building, and no lines

If you want to spend 4 or 5 hours you can get a taste of the MET, but I could spend days in there and not enjoy everything. Its quite an amazing museum.

Bought an item from them but thru mail order, they are pretty reliable with other CNDN customers. They do have a B&M store in NYC.

Take the subway. Start with a Staten Island ferry ride (it will give you a good view of Liberty & NYC skyline) then, as suggested by previous poster, work your way up from batttery park, hit strategic locations like Chinatown, Little Italy, SOHO, Village, 34th St., 42nd St., and continue on until at least Upper West side/Central Park area.

Dont forget to try some deli sandwiches, NY bagel w/ cream cheese & lox, street pretzels, etc.

A store? More like they own the whole block. (OK, a big chunk of it)

When you buy a ticket at the Rockefeller -- it tells you what time your "appointment" is so you can roam around them come back. At the Empire State you gotta sit in line until its your turn.

I just read a review advising that the Rockefeller is better since they have glass barriers instead of iron fence on their observation decks.

are you sure? NYC's subway is the most complicated subway system i have seen... but for sure, it takes you everywhere you want in NYC

If your staying in Manhattan the trick is to know if you want to go up or down town, and remember stations are soemtimes tucked into a building rather then stairs in the sidewalk. We zipped around all over Manhattan, never walked more then 4 or 5 blocks and found it very easy. We staid one night in Time Square, 2 in Chelsea, switched hotels, went down town, to Brooklyn, the MET, shopping on 5th, ect ect, never had a problem.

Theres lots of lines but we only ended up needing to transfer between lines once as we would just plan our routes better.

Another trick is to figure out what way north (or east/west/south) after you get out of the station as it can be hard to know if your walking downtown or uptown until you walk a block, up and down isnt a big problem those blocks are small but east west blocks are long.
