View Full Version : * Jumping CPU multiplier * BAD FOR CPU ? *

Just got some new Mushkin ram, and I have been stable with my OC @ 3.0ghz.

However, I left ENABLED, this feature on my BIOS that makes the CPU multiplier jump around between 6 and 7 (E6300). This makes the CPU cooler when it is on idle. Was wondering if this feature will be bad for the CPU ?

No. SpeedStep = good

That must be a mobile cpu correct? If not i thought intel has locked all their cpu's since like......15 yrs ago?

yeah that is what I thought as well !

Don't know why my computer couldn't run stable when this feature was enabled ? :S but now I have tested over and over again with Orthos ! and everthing looks good :D @ 3.0ghz

idle @ 45-48degrees in the summer is decent I find :D and Load doesn't touch 60degrees !

Nice Mushkin :D

btw... I had some died Corsair Ram that I RMA'ed.... didn't want to have downtime in computer, so I got Mushkin ram!

Anyone interested in 2x1gb Corsair XMS2 ram DDR2-6400 ? $100 is yours :D

The problem you may face is when you need high volts for your overclock. i am running 1.6v on my E6420.. when the multi changes the volts also change and can cause stability problems... however if your lucky to get a cpu that dosn't need high vcore you shouldn't have trouble.

those temps are a bit high.. on air i was getting 35 degrees idle and 50 under load...on water i am getting 26-28 degrees idle and 38-40 load :) @3.3

It's perfectly fine for the system to dynamically change the voltage/multiplier - if it was bad for the CPU, they wouldn't have this feature. However, since you are overclocking, when idle and voltage has been dropped, the CPU is running faster than it's supposed to, so it might not be stable at that voltage. SpeedStep doesn't know/care that you're overclocking.

the temps are high cuz I know there is a lot of dust in my computer case. It usually idles around 35-39 in the summer.

Yeah, even when my computer idles at around 2.5ghz (from 1.86) the computer is perfectly stable :D

I'm all good... I like the CHIP that I got... really good E6300 for OC'ing.. doesn't require too much voltage :D

Think of it like Cool 'n Quiet on your AMD chip.

exactly

my 3800+X2 is "jumping" all the time

* Speedstep * is * good *.

Less voltage is good.

speedstep does wonders eh !

it helps keep the cpu really cool :D low 40's on idle while OC'ed to 3.0ghz :D and it drops to around 2.5ghz :D
