Just get the 360 HDDVD player since it is only $200 and is apparently pretty good from the reviews it's received

na, you can get a hda2 for 369. The pic quality is better, it's much more convienient and you dont have to move that Brick of a power supply if you want to move the player to another TV.

No point here, just thought it was amusing to see how many times each format has been declared a winner:

HD-DVD will stick around for a while but Blu Ray will be the winner. If you're looking for a temporary HD-DVD setup, then the choice is clear to go ahead with the HD-DVD add on for Xbox. Also, with the HD-DVD add on you can always hook it up to your computer and use it to copy HD-DVD movies to Blu Ray discs when Blu-Ray discs become more affordable.

Will we ever have a thread that doesn't turn into a HD DVD vs. BD.

I think it depends on you budget and/or set up.

it only finds the term "HD DVD" and "winning" on the same page.
even "Blu Ray Winning over HD DVD" would count as a searched item under the first heading.
Now the same theory can't apply to "Blu ray winning". why? no reason it just can't. why is the earth round, i don't know, it just is. whatever.
Going back on topic, i'd probably for the standalone player. who knows what defects can be found on the xbox 360 drive.

Save your money and just get the xbox drive. You don't have a 1080p tv so there's no point in spending a lot of money.

YOu can use the drive independent of the console. Laptop would also work.

I have a Xbox 360 HD DVD and the only downside over a stand alone HD DVD player is that it cant decode or pass through HD audio (no Dolby TrueHD or PCM) to your home threatre. The best it can do is Dolby Digital/DTS.
If you have a nice audio setup then thats a deal breaker in my opinion.

You didn't even bother to search with paranthesis...
When you use paranthesis... I got:
Results 1 - 10 of about 25,400 for "blu-ray winning". (0.07 seconds)
Results 1 - 10 of about 15,800 for "hd-dvd winning". (0.32 seconds)
And even then, it doesn't say anything. If you look at the search results, most of the HDDVD hits link to articles questioning whether or not HDDVD is winning, and same with BluRay hits.

Assuming you don't want HDMI for lossless audio the HD DVD drive is a safe bet. I would venture that on your display, you would be hard pressed to be able to see the differences a dedicated player would afford. Plus you mitigate the risk involved in purchasing into one format in the HD wars.
I say go for it.

If your maximum resolution is really 720P as you say, then just get an upconverting DVD player, I doubt you'll see much difference between HD DVD/Blu-Ray and upconveted DVD. It's a shame though, a 42" should be able to do at LEAST 1080i well.
Mind you, if you have a particularily good sound system you might still see some advantage to going into HiDef, but if that is the case, don't go for the XBox 360 add-on, since the sound output on that unit is not as flexible or high quality as some of the stand alones.
That being said, I really can't recommend buying into HD DVD at this point. It's already lost the format war in Japan and Austraila, and Europe is following quite quickly. North America is a little slower with HD DVD only being outsold by Blu-Ray ~2:1. But don't take my word for it, check out the numbers:

(Posts 1 and 2 are constantly updated with the latest figures, supplied by various third party sources, but mostly Home Media Magezine combined with Nielsen Videoscan Ratings).

Lossless audio over HDMI? I think you're confused dude cause audio doesn't pass through hdmi, only video does.

You would notice a difference in the clearity of the picture if you had an HD source for sure. Upconverting dvd players are good, but they're no comparison to a hd-dvd source even at 720p. Having said that though, like I said before, it's steep to spend $350 on a player when you can spend $150 on just the drive that has multiuses.

This only works if you have two things in your laptop 1) a fast processor 2) a decent video card (something 7800 or above). Without either of these, the picture will be choppy and you won't enjoy watching a movie. The 7600 gt doesn't cut it for HD playback, so anything slower than that defiently won't work properly.

Nope, you're the one thats confused. HDMI is your one-stop shop for an all-digital video / audio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hdmi) solution.

Go with the XBox drive, save your money and see what happens in the format wars. If you decide you want a standalone, they'll be crazy cheap soon. Rember how fast DVD players dropped from 300-200-100-40. If the XBox drive can hold you over for a couple years, buy that.

I always thought DVI and HDMI were the same format just different connectors, and clearly DVI doesn't carry audio. I didn't realize HDMI was different..... ASS

You should have said that in your initial reply - instead you made it sound like you knew what you are talking about, when you obviously had no clue. To top it off - you added a "dude" in there to rub it in...
Haha - then you PM me to call *me* an "ASS"?!?
Classic.

LMAO "dude" isn't used to "rub it in" as you would say..... I think if you look up the word, you'll realize that dude. It's a commonly used word and has been for a long time. It's used to refer to a person. Clearly you're taking my comments the wrong way.

Yeah, cause you're being one. Instead of leaving it alone after I admitted I was wrong about the whole HDMI thing in the forum, you had to come on here and "rub it in" that I made a mistake..... even though the original convo had nothing to do with you. I call that being an "Ass."
What really surprises me is how you don't realize you're continuing to be one right now.
