I would stay away from electronics unless it is a trusted and reputable retailer you're buying from. And those retailers sell the electronics for prices that are fairly comparable to Canadian prices.

Best thing to buy in China is the knock-off clothes. A lot of it is actually made from the same factory as the originals.

I stocked up big on socks and underwear too...$1 for CK boxers and $3 for 12 pairs of Nike socks haha.

I also agree on the bags...very inexpensive and its not like they can cheat you much on those. I bought a fake Diesel messenger bag for $10 and its served me well.

If you're into herbal products, I'm sure you could find stuff for cheap.

Tea, medicine, ointments, supplements, beauty products etc.

Bring back sports equipment that the airline will allow you to bring for free. Golf clubs come to mind...

As a souvenir from China, buy those little red books that were popular during the Cultural Revolution.

By the way, why are you spending more days in Xi'an than in Shanghai? Frankly speaking, Xi'an is quite ugly and Shanghai is one of my favorite cities in Asia. You should spend more time in Shanghai and less time in Xi'an.

I would stay away from beauty products. Most are fake brand names anyway.

You might also find it difficult to find good quality clothings, electronics and other goodies in Xi'an, as it's located inland. You'll have a much better chance locating those stuffs in Shanghai and other coastal cities convenient for exporting.

Nanjing is famous for ducks. Make sure you try it there. You can also buy air tight packages to bring back.

You'll have to prepare for lots of history lessons in Xi'an and Nanjing. Nanjing has a much more historic than scenic significance.

Make sure you learn to bargain :P Enjoy your trip!

thanks I'm actually born in Nanjing haha just.. I moved to the States when I was 3.. and havn't been back for a long time. Last time i tried bargaining at the great wall of China the lady was like "you've guts young man, but you bargain weird, I'll give you the deal anyways" - it was some shirt from 70 or 100 to about 27RMB somthing like that.

Obviously I would love to stay in Shanghai more but.. plans dont always work out - visiting my grandparents.

Do you guys think I can find good clothing and stuff (the Brand Name ones, or fake brand names that look like authentic brand name in Nanjing and Xi'an?) I realize they are a bit inland, my guess Nanjing would be a tad bit better to get better clothing (prolly not as good as shanghai), Xi'an i am expecting to find lots of.. terracotti.

Speaking of Shanghai (I'll be there for the day I get off the airplane). What are some stores I can visit to Buy as much as possible from SHANGHAI, which I cannot get , or cannot get in the quality of in Nanjing or Xian?

Does anybody know if China is a good place to buy IBM THINKPADS, specifically the T SERIES, e.g. T61, T60 and the T40, 41, 42? I believe they are manufactured there so logically it should be cheaper, especially the older T4x?

 packaged ducks :cheesygri thats why i mentioned ducks in the list previously.

Another thing I forgot to add to the list was Watches + some other things I probably can't bring back.
