It's really a matter of taste I think. There are at least 1 or 2 movies out of the 5 I'll be getting that I probably would have bought anyways, so it's some savings at least.

Here's a link to the deal for anyone wondering:

Hmm, 5 free Blu-ray movies or nothing. Tough decision. I think I'll take the 5 free BD movies and sell them.

Can anyone explain to me why you'd buy a standalone blu-ray player when you can get the PS3 for cheaper (and prolly future proof to boot)?

HomeTheater Enthusiast just simply don't like the idea of having a Console in their set up I guess... :?:

If I had my own place and a true dedicated room for it, I probably wouldn't want one too. LOL I agree Sony's PlayStation 3 is the Best, Cheapest & Future Proof BD player out there but some people are just picky. :cheesygri

Probably the same reason people prefer dedicated DVD players over their console. The dedicated Blu-ray players conform to standard form factors and are definitely quieter than the PS3. Yes, it makes sense to use the PS3 as your Blue-ray player, but withe the lack of a remote and for someone that could care less about games, the standalone units are clearly a better choice. One other thing to note is that standalone units also have dedicated video processing chips as opposed to the software/Cell/RSX solution in the PS3.

One reason that I would probably get a PS3 over a dedicated unit is the future resale value is more and easier to sell over Ebay. JMHO.
