Just as title says, I'm trying to load a motorbike onto the back of a pickup truck, and I need a ramp sorta thing. I only need to do this once, because I just want to transport the dead bike from my old place to my new place so I can repair it, so I don't really want to buy an expensive ramp just for one use...

The bike is around 250-300 pounds I'm assuming, but yea. What kind of cheap ideas do you guys have to load this thing up? Some plank of wood? =o

A wood board? 2 x 6 or 2 x 8?

2x8 will work, that's what I used to use. I would be weary of a 2x6 as it leaves less area for error as you push the bike up. Also have to consider length, too short and it will be steep, too long and it will bend and be steep at end (or worse break).

2 strong guys should be able to lift the bike into the back of the truck.
You could always go that route.

Rent a UHaul/Discount truck with a ramp?

But yea home depot wood plank (maybe mahogany/oak will support it?) will work as well. Make sure you set it up so it doesn't crack. Do a right triangle to the truck with a wood pillar below the ramp piece. You'll need three people. One behind the bike, on one the truck flatbed and one maneuver the bike by standing on a chair next to the ramp (don't stand on the wood :D).

I hope you thought about how to secure the bike on the truck :)

Two people shouldn't have any problem getting that up there, or one strong person could, if it's really 200-250.

And yeah, make sure you've got some winch straps to tie it down.. crank them down enough that the bike crouches down on its suspension.. if you wiggle the bike and only the truck moves, you've got it right.

i've done it with some random wood i found in a buddy's garage.

however -- if in doubt call a local motorcycle shop and they often do a pickup service for a fee.

once you get it on the pickup truck you will probably need a set of tie downs unless you are going to ride in the bed with the bike holding on to the brakes. make sure you're buddy drives slow around corners when doing this. How do I know? you're lucky your bike doesn't weigh 400-500lbs like mine did!

good luck. if ur in the gta check out gtamotorcycle.ca -- you might find someone near you that can help you out.
