View Full Version : How does a broken odometer affect registering a vehicle?

I've been looking to get a cheapie car, and have been calling up people on various listings. For one particular listing I called up, the odometer on the car had apparently stopped moving, but the rest of the car worked fine. I would figure that this might end up causing a bit of trouble when trying to register or safety the vehicle, but then again... something like that might fall through the tracks? What are everybody's thoughts on this?

The car won't pass a "safety" inspection and cannot be registered, I'm pretty sure. A working odometer is required on all vehicles in Ontario IIRC. Therefore to get it "safetied" you will either have to fix the odo or hope the mechanic doesn't notice.

Plus there is good reason not to purchase a car with a broken odo--quite simply you have no idea of the actual mileage on the car as the odo is broken. I guess if everything checks out fully, then you might not be too concerned but the Ministry definitely will be as mentioned.

The odometer is likely been tampered, I wouldn't touch a car like this.
