Basically, I am looking for remote desktop software as XP Home doesn't come with one. I looked into some free ones such VNC but it is not good for streaming music, or video (very choppy or no sound). It is going to be in LAN, so I don't think internet speed connection would be a problem.

Basic setup:

1 desktop with video/dvd/music files )
1 laptop (this will remotely play the files..)

Any recommendations for free or cheap software is welcome!

None of them will be good for streaming video. They aren't designed to be.

I would have said your best bet is Remote Desktop (Ie: MS Terminal Services) but as you said, Win XP Home doesn't support it acting as a server, though you could connect to a Remote Desktop server from it. Just have to download the client.

Win XP Pro and Win XP MCE 2005 or later come with the Remote Desktop server.

Something else you can try is Remotely Anywhere..

PCanywhere, GoToMyPC, Radmin...

But I doubt any would support streaming media.

why not just use the "map network drive" function and just browse to the folder with all the movies/music and **** and just play from there. so whenever u connect the laptop to the network that drive will be accesible.

thats what i use with my server and HTPC. and u dont get any issues with the stuttering or anything like that.

i use vnc viewer/server 4 to access my server in the closet, but thats only for browsing internet on it and downloading ****. not for watching anything really.
