Quick question for anyone who has had experience leasing from GMAC.

I have recently leased a Subaru (contract through GMAC). I have leased before with little trouble but this time I am a bit confused. Instead of providing me with the original forms of the vehicle permit the dealer ripped off the plate portion and gave that to me and said that even though the plates were mine, GMAC "owned" the car so they were keeping the original of the vehicle permit and giving me a photocopy.

I called the Ont. Min. of Trans. on two occaisions to ask them if this was okay (cause I'm a worrywart)- one individual told me that I might get into trouble if pulled over, the other said that it should be okay but wasn't sure.

The reason I'm confused is that I have never been given a copy of the permit before when leasing and none of my friends/family ever had either-from multiple different companies. So I just wanted to know if this is a normal practice and if anyone has ever had trouble with carrying only a copy (of just the front of the permit).

My dad had two leased vehicles (neither of them through GMAC) and that's what they did. They took the permit, photocopied it (maybe had the photocopy notarized, I don't know?), then cut the permit in two and gave him the plate part stapled to the photocopy.

Thanks so much.

I've talked to so many people and nobody has ever had this (looked at me like I was crazy!!) so at least I know that its somewhat normal. Although I must say that the photocopy I have is definitely not notarized or certified in any way- just a standard photocopy anyone can do-which is why I was nervous.

A photocopy should is acceptable if you get pulled over.

I'm on my 4th vehicle in the last 10 years with GMAC and the dealer has always given me a photocopy of the vehicle portion. Which seems silly because when I go to the licensing office to renew my sticker, the ministry office re-prints the vehicle portion and gives it to me anyways. (even though I don't ask for it, they just always seem to do it.)
