So I bought some parts for my car and I got raped at the brokage/customs fees. The part came to my work and I gave the driver my credit card, a week later turns out that he wrote down incorrect #s and didn't go thru.
UPS had an automated system call me at my work and also sent me an invoice...can i ignore this or will this be sent to collections ?
Thanks

I think this happened to me as well.
The driver came to my house an hour or two late (from an overnight shipment).. and informed me that the charge for duties and brokerage was $290. I gave him my credit card, but asked if I were eligible for any refund (because of his lateness, and UPS's service guarantee).
He told me "no" as my house is an "extended area" or something.. (When they promised delivery before 12PM..)
It's been a month since the delivery.. and I still have not been charged, nor contacted about it. :)

Just ignore it and say you never received the call. It "got deleted" when your phone lost power.

i am expecting to receive two packages from UPS...to pay for the brokerage fees are credit cards the only accepted method?
if we use cash, do they carry any change?

You can use cash, but they don't carry change.

Unless the charge is trivial, I wouldn't count on UPS not going to collections. They'll probably give you a warning before doing so.
Moral of the story: never use UPS for cross-border shipping. If I want to order something but UPS is the only option, I find another place to order from.

There are a number of "class action lawsuits" filed for UPS and Fedex regarding brokerage fees. May be worth looking into if you ahve paid them in the past

I had trouble with both UPS and DHL on collect charges.
The courier charges to send a package from here to Taipei is so damn expensive. So I sent it on Freight Collect. Freight collect or 3rd party charges are supposed to be much higher, but in this case, it turns out that it is much cheaper than if I had to pay from here.
After a month, they send me an invoice saying the destination party refused to pay. Little did they know that the destination company was my own relative and that I have all paperwork/proof of payment made there.
I sent them a proof of it and that shut them up.
What I found was, both UPS and DHL tried the same stunt with me... Looks like they try their best to suck the money off unknowing people... This happens if you plan to send RMA back, then they collect the charges from Freight Collect and also from you (saying they did not get the payment from the destination)...

I try to find places that ship usps instead of ups too but UPS isn't always bad.
Those higher priced rates include brokerage fees:
UPS Worldwide Express Plus™, UPS Worldwide Express™, UPS Worldwide Express Saver™ and UPS Worldwide Expedited™.

Take this as a lesson and learn from it... NEVER IF YOU CAN AVOID IT get anything shipped international with UPS/FedEX/DHL. They all charge insane brokerage fees over and above the tax and normal duty - EVEN IF THE ITEM IS TAX AND DUTY EXEMPT.
Always use USPS/International Mail where possible. The tracking system may not be as efficient as UPS but it won't cost you $30 in brokerage fees to recieve a $20 item.

A question about brokerage:
I just ordered a U$150 item and the company sent it UPS how much do you think my brokerage and customs fees will amount to?

As 6millions mentioned, theres no BROKERAGE FEE for express/expedited services. As far as I know only the standard service has brokerage fees. You'll still have to pay any assessed taxes/duties, but no the brokerage fee.
If UPS is the only option, ship express. After everything is said and done, you're most likely to pay less and receive your package faster.

Also note the above chart fees are IN ADDITION TO any taxes or duties as a result of the brokerage.
If you ship with USPS you usually don't have to pay taxes or duties AT ALL even if the item would normally require it, since so few packages are actually inspected.

You'll probably be in the $90-100.00 range
I just had a $125US EBay item shipped by UPS by mistake and they wanted $80.00 at my door. We denied the shipment. I feel $20 or $30 is fair, but not $80.00. That's just plain robbery
The seller meant to ship USPS, but was sending out 3 other packages that same day and shipped mine by mistake with them. UPS contacted the seller, he had to pay $14.00 to get the package returned to him. He resent it USPS. It arrived today with a value of $125US on it, and I paid $0.00 in duty and shipping. I even asked the mailman is there was a mistake. He said nope.
I offered to cover the costs to the seller for the second shipping fees, because I would have had to pay that in duty anyways, but he refused. He said it was his screwup.

For USPS, Items worth $20 Cdn or less are not subject to taxes or the $5.00handling fee.
Customs do not inspect the packages. They look at the value of the declaration of value on the package. If the value is around $20 to $25, they will probably let it go. But if it is a high value item, you almost certain will pay taxes and a handling fee.

Use FEDEX for low value shipments. No brokerage charge.
As for the UPS charge, just because they wrote the CC number wrong ... you were prepare to pay for the charge anyway ... right?? ... pay it. Else you are ripping them off. Pay but send your payment to the President and tell them about your honesty.:D

UPS has those shipping options that include the brokerage fees, but they are a fair bit expensive, and not worth it either.
UPS inspects every package, so that they can charge their broker fees on it. So much stuff I get from USPS goes duty free. If you do get charges it always 5 dollars plus gst/pst (depending which province you live in), but UPS charges 30-40 plus taxes, no matter how meager your order is.
It can be quite the pain ordering stuff from the US and trying to make sure the shipper is going to send it USPS (always have to make sure to explain why).
I try to avoid them at all costs, I don't know why so many US companies are hellbent on using them for shipping.

What did you ship to get the $290 in duties and brokerage? Didn't the customs ask you to pay GST?
I think this happened to me as well.

UPS isn't THAT bad. Using a UPS express option which includes brokerage is worth the extra charge in some cases.
The brokerage charge ranges from $7 to $70, for all items over $20. Don't forget to add the COD and bond charges.
I off ten uses UPS to ship stuff which I needed yesterday for my business. Just have the shipper declared $20 value on the invoice, and as long as its reasonable, they are none of the wise.
Many companies only use UPS because they get amazing rates with contracts. This is the same reason why I only ship Canada Post for my business.

all I can say is BS...
Usually UPS, I'm never charged brokerage fee, then again those orders are from Canada to Canada. I got a package today from a guy off ebay, who said he was sending via USPS, however I got a UPS sticker on my door. I wasn't home and it says brokerage fee $48, for something I paid $11 on ebay for... BS!
I'm thinking of returning it to sender and having them resend it.. No where on his description is UPS mentioned. It said "USPS Express Mail International" in the shipping area...

UPS charges their BS brokerage on shipments that cross borders. It's a total scam charge and they must pull in a fortune from it.

well im talking to the seller and hopefully it will work out... because I don't think I'm paying a $48 fee for something that was $11 on ebay... the seller also posted USPS in their shipping description.. but seems like when shipping time came, he changed his mind and used UPS... guess he doesn't know about brokerage fees...

You can have it reassessed based on the actual price u paid. Brokerage was probably based on the stated value or what they believe the value was.

You can clear the customs yourself to avoid brokerage fee. Here's how:
Ask the tracking number from the seller and then call up UPS.
Tell them that you will clear the customs yourself.
After that, when the package arrives at their warehouse, go there and get the paperworks.
Then go to your nearest Canada customs office and pay the duty + taxes (if any).
Go back to UPS with the paperworks and shove it up their face or the place where sun doesn't shine. :)
Pick up your package.

i got into the same credit card situation before.
all they did was sending invoice by mail telling me to pay, I never paid. Then collector was sending letter telling to pay as well. After receiving like 5 letters by mail. It stop and I never heard from them again.
No phone calls, I would assume that they did not have my phone number.
