View Full Version : RFD Cool Wall: Car #41 - Pontiac Solstice

Thanks to all who voted last week on the Buick Lucerne. Unfortunately (IMO), it was added to the seriously uncool category but here's how the cool wall looks now;
http://www.robertphillips.ca/rfdcoolwall.gif
During the week RFD member Slippery_Pete sent me a PM asking for a vote on the Pontiac Solstice or the Nissan 350Z. I thought, why not do a full month on 2 seater roadsters. You know, the kind of car that is perfect for the middle-age balding middle class guy! Here's the lineup for the coming weeks
1) Pontiac Solstice
2) Nissan 350Z
3) BMW Z4
4) Mazda Miata
5) Porsche Boxter
Now remember these are just the base models (ie. no nismo 350z, no z4m, no solstice gxp, no boxter s). Are they all cool? Any sub-zero? Any are just too middle age crisis? You decide on the RFD cool wall.

As always voting will go until Saturday. This will take the coming month, but if you want you can always send a suggestion by sending me a PM.

I think it's a nice looking car but I don't think it is cool. It doesn't have enough power to be cool and I think it's under $40k so not cool imo

Who is Jazz?
Google is your friend.
Google "Pontiac Jazz" or "Solstice Jazz" comes up with Autobots/Transformers hits.
Meaning the "Jazz" character was probably a Pontiac Solstice.
One can then only deduce that the RIP Jazz hints at a spoiler in the movie that the Autobots character named Jazz dies.
Gotta love logical thinking eh?

There, that already shows it's an uncool car.
But out of the twin, I would pick the Saturn Sky over the Solstice.

Cool.
apart from Porsche Boxter maybe..I have seen mostly young people driving those cars, they are not cars for middle aged people.
If this is uncool and civic is cool then this borad is seriously fu**ed up.

it was added to the sub-zero category
hehe, bit of a freudian slip?
Too bad there's no Caterham in the lineup... now there's a middle age crisis that I wouldn't mind.

Do you work for some Jap. auto company??? Seems like every time a domestic does well with your little game you complain, yet when some jap/import car gets grilled you call people out on it.
... Believe it or not, there are some companies out there that don't end with the letter "A" that are making some pretty wicked cars.

Same way I feel about the Saturn Sky. The only Pontiac/Saturn I've ever given a second look to.

Odd that we wouldn't vote on the GXP model since its still cheaper than most of the cars on the cool wall.
If very mediocre FWD cars like the c30 are cool, then this is definitely cool.

Obviously someone has joined the game a little late. I accidentally wrote sub-zero when I meant seriously un-cool, cause that's what the vote was. You would notice that if you looked at the cool wall. I have corrected that error now. Nice to see that a couple people actually read the commentary not just vote.
Second, I work for the government, and the last 3 cars I have owned were made by Plymouth, Buick, and now Chevy.

No problem man! I'll come out anytime!
Anyway, I just call as I see it. The last couple of times a domestic did well you went out of your way to say you dissagree and then when a import was up to bat you made some sarcrastic remarks about how people will bash it for being an import.
....Nice to see a change of pace from you this time around! ;)

if you are going to say that I want to see some specific examples. Here are the domestics that have done well (ie. cool and sub zero)
CTS-V
GT500
Camaro
Corvette C6
300C
not that many to begin with, but as I recall I liked the CTS and Shelby (in fact suggested that the GT500 should be sub zero), I said I didn't like the Camaro (I prefer the Challenger, which I really like), I like the C6 but I don't like the 300C (there are just too many on the road). I like the chevy impala and buick lucerne and challenger (none of which did that well).
Please explain exactly where I knocked people for liking imports and for propping up domestics. I evaluate a cool factor partly on the badge, but more on what is behind the badge in terms of technology, performance, looks, and the x factor. That doesn't mean blindly voting for anything that ends in a (or nissan, or mistubishi, or subaru, or lexus, or infiniti, or the other imports that don't end in a)

I went into your posting history to find some examples but ain't know way I'm spending time searching through your 2K+ posts. I read your cool wall threads here and there and I remember you disagreeing with many domestic votes that were positive. Right off the top of my head I remember you making some remarks about the 300C and others before that. After the 300C you put up a Jap sports car and even before the voting started you were already making sarcastic/witty remarks about how people will vote such a great car down simply because its a Jap.... So I won't post any examples (because it isn't worth the effort), but I am going on what I remember.
I just wish people could talk about cars without getting into the domestic vs import debate. I know it's hard for most people on these boards to believe, but BOTH domestic and foreign auto-makers are making some pretty incredible cars as well as some pretty horrible ones.
It would just be nice if people could talk about certain cars for what they are and not for what badge(s) are on the front of them.

Also, just because you own one, doesn't make it sub-zero. There is no such thing as Ferrari Enzo vs Solstice. Yes while there can be a subzero "cheap car" I don't think it's a base model car like this.
We all have our opinions though. Vote as you like but vote properly. Just because you guys like a car, doesn't make it cool or sub-zero. There has to be good reasons why it's cool or sub-zero.

The swoopy body work on the Solstice/SKY looks incredible. I'm so glad GM didn't redesign the car too much and make it vanilla bland from concept to production. I've gotta hand it to GM to come out with something this radical considering how conservative they have been in the past with their designs (except for Corvette and the newer Cadillacs). Taking the badges off the MX-5 and the Solstice putting them side-by-side I would take the Solstice just from looks alone. It's a shame that the Solstice is such a porky beast, but the GXP version solves that. And for that I vote cool.

It's a step in the right direction for Pontiac. Rekindles that energy spirit they were lacking before. Two thumbs up :)
What I'd like to see come back is the Pontiac Bonneville, RWD platform, V8.

Sounds like a strange "rule" and I doubt many people are following it. To me these votes have always been about all models of whatever car, considered for voting purposes. Anyway as I said before this voting is getting tiring for me anyway...
So not voting, lol, but I will say something about the base Solstice I really did not like. There is no provision for adjusting the height of the seat in that car and the seat is very low and the car is very low but the dash, relative to the seat, is actually quite high. I would say unless you're 6ft+ in height, you are probably not seeing over the dash very well. Myself being a shorter person, I could not see myself driving that car safely. For such a small car it's surprising that a small person cannot drive it. I would assume higher models/options (perhaps with power seats?) would not have that issue but it was quite something to get in that car and say to myself "how the heck am I supposed to drive this?" LOL. Miata, Z3, Z4--completely different story--those cars it seems the smaller you are the easier it is to drive. Very strange seat in that base Solstice IMO.
I just wish people could talk about cars without getting into the domestic vs import debate. I know it's hard for most people on these boards to believe, but BOTH domestic and foreign auto-makers are making some pretty incredible cars as well as some pretty horrible ones.

Amen.
Also, just because you own one, doesn't make it sub-zero. There is no such thing as Ferrari Enzo vs Solstice. Yes while there can be a subzero "cheap car" I don't think it's a base model car like this.
And I also wish people would stop comparing cars in order to put them in the categories. The cars in the sub-zero weren't in there before they were voted for! So there's no point in saying "oh this can't go in sub-zero because it isn't an Enzo"
We all have our opinions though. Vote as you like but vote properly. Just because you guys like a car, doesn't make it cool or sub-zero. There has to be good reasons why it's cool or sub-zero.
To me saying you have that car is less baseless of a vote than considering how it compares to other cars that were also voted for in whatever categories. But that's just me. Do you get what I mean? By voting based on how you think it compares to other cars voted in the various categories, all you're doing is starting to put cars in categories (collectively, if we all vote like that) into categories simply based on a popularity contest/to serve the status quo. That essentially eliminates the point of voting for categories IMO. Not at first it wasn't (because there were no cars in there), but as I've said before now all it is, is saying things like "okay only supercars go in Sub-Zero"; "only lame or undesireably unconventional cars go in seriously uncool"--why do we even have those categories? We all know what's going in there before we even vote on it, especially when people say stuff like "oh it can't be this because this is in there and this doesn't compare to that..."
Sure it's voting, so it is indeed a popularity contest of sorts, but what it shouldn't be IMO is just progressive selection of cars into perhaps 2 categories where there are 4 categories available. Once again, just my $0.02 on the cool wall voting.
But as you say, anyone can vote anything anywhere for whatever reason, regardless of how anyone thinks they "should" be voting. (So yeah I'm tired of voting. Not the posting comments but definitely the voting seems pointless to me these days.)

well take the mustang vote for example. Voting on a base V6 mustang is a lot different from voting on a GT500, or even from there to a GT500 KR or Super Snake. Same goes for the 3 series, it is a different car from the M3.
If you don't like the cool wall then don't vote.

I don't ... I haven't since you screwed up the Civic vote
If you are going to make nonsense rules, then do the opposite ... make the vote for the top model that everyone here would like. Isn't it strange that you would use the Civic Si and then screw the domestic by voting on the crappiest possible model? Makes no sense ... The SI is a completely different car from the base Civic and the GXP is completely different from the base Solstice
Why pick the higher model on some cars and not others?

I'm not saying Puff is anti-domestic (he is usually pretty positive on domestic cars), but this decision to use the base on this car and the best possible on the Civic is suspect ...
Would anyone vote a base Civic cool ... maybe on this board, but in general, no one thinks a base Civic is even a little cool ... one the Civic vote, more people voted for uncool and seriously uncool than cool, yet somehow it is listed as cool ...

Firstly, it's not $40k. Secondly, why does the make matter? Anyway as for Pontiacs, I'm sure you could push cars like the Bonne SSEi, GXP (when the Bonne was around), as well as the GP GTP/GXP in to the $40k range, so I don't see how it's all that shocking that a Pontac could be $40k
And again the Solstice isn't necessarily as much as $40k anyway.
