What is the work environment like?
How much do starting merchandiser/cashiers make?
If you had the choice, would you rather be a cashier or a merchandiser? Do their jobs usually overlap?
Do merchandisers have to do overnight shifts or is there a night crew(assuming the SDM isn't 24hr)?
Any other comments would be good.
Thanks.

cashiers make slightly above minium wage, mdsers make about $ 1 more than cashiers. Mdsers move and display stocks. They rarely trained for the tills. Cashiers are to ring in the sales, tidy their immediate areas and occasionally put msdes back on to the shelves.

So if you had the choice, which one would you work? Do merchandisers usually have to do really late shifts (past 1am) or is most of the stocking done during the day?

I would go for mdser if you are fit. For most stores, the msders work during store hours. Although I think I saw 1 or 2 overnight postings for regular stores. Can't say for the 24 hours store. Beware, mdsers tend to be males and cashiers are females.

How do you go about applying for the Merchandiser position at Shoppers? I checked and there wasn't a fax number or email.
I'm guessing you just walk in and speak to manager in charge?

Merchandisers usually work during store hours. There are merchandisers who do work overnight, but they are specifically hired for that position and usually are payed a premium for working overnights.
As far as applying, you simply have to walk in and hand in a resume.
The store at Bathurst + Centre Street in Thornhill will be holding a job fair soon, if you are interested.

Beware, mdsers tend to be males and cashiers are females. This is definitely true, but when I was with SDM 7+ years ago, I started as a cashier + merchandiser. (One cashier shift + 2 merch shifts per week.) I was a quick learner and easily got promoted to supervisor within a year. Just something to keep in mind.

How do you go about getting a job at shoppers? Hookups? I applied at my local shoppers (bur oak and mcowan) a few times and I have never got a call back even though I've had other jobs for the past years.

I was a graveyard merchandiser for over 2 years. Sun - Thu 11 pm - 7 am with 2 - 1/2 hr breaks. Made 20K/Yr. No customers to deal with. It was good times. Only thing I did differently than everyone else was to "face" the section prior to "filling" it. You then prioritize the products needed and as the week progresses the list slowly disappears. This ensured that no matter how much product you still had to put out on the floor you could leave at 7:00 am and your section would look great. Then the next Sunday start all over again.

Talk to the Associate owner or Front Store manager. Try to get a prescription when the owner is working in the pharmacy. Preferably on a slow night. In other words, stalk him/her.

No. The ower has to be licenced pharmacist and must put in hours in the pharmacy. The FS manager can be any warm body that can crack a whip.

Names of store owners/pharmacists are listed on the SDM site.
Go to "STORE FINDER (http://web.sa.mapquest.com/shoppers/?tempset=search)", once you've located your store, click on "STORE DETAILS", the owner's name is listed above the store phone#.
Good luck everyone!

30% off *regular* priced items with exclusions (ie. phone cards, TTC tickets, milk), and the price cannot be lower than cost.

So I guess stuff like ipods and xbox360 are pretty much already priced "at cost"?

I'm not sure about those items as I didn't work at SDM.... my ex-gf did as a pharmacist. I can recall that at the time, we didn't use the discount much. The 20X promos available to the public worked out to a better deal since it applied to sale items and electronics without regard to cost.

So, Shoppers uses all their own merchandisers?
I know that a lot of stores have to use other merchandisers for specific displays, like sometimes in stores for sunglasses or yogurt even
I know this because I was going to try merchandising, but I just audit displays right now.
