Went by my local staples, they had like half a dozen laptops supposedly on clearance. I just looked for the cheapest one, an Acer Travelmate 2480 (putting on Acer anti flame suit now!) :D
specs can be found her.

It was on sale for $597.
I didn't copy down the other deals. Anyone else notice the clearance laptop deals?

Cold, the specs don't justify the cost here. I would recommend these alternatives if you're looking at laptops under $600:

wait for high def drives ie. blu-ray or HD DVD or combo drives. Sony just released a laptop with blu-ray. No point in buying something that will be obselete in 6 months.

So you are comparing a $597 to a notebook that's $2399? Do you forsee the $2399 model dropping to $597 in six months?

Once HD drives for laptops become viable in terms of price, they will be a swap out upgrade. Same as when people with a cd rom or cd burner wanted to upgrade to a cdrw/dvd rom combo drive.
You might also want to consider Toshiba. Select models will start shipping with DVDRW/HD DVD rom playback this fall, and all models next year will come with the drive as standard equipment.

Yeah, because HiDef media is just taking the world by storm. Not.

Actually, no point buying the format that may die out.
With regard to the laptop, a Celeron is never a good deal.

Then in 6 months Sony's blu-ray laptop will be obsolete and someone else will have something better...and then...
I feel sorry for your bank account, you must really keep up with the Jones' a lot.

Swung by another GVR Staples branch, noted the following deals. I think the Toshiba looked like the best deal.
Acer AS5610 sku#099802852849 - $597
14" 1.6Ghz (??)
HP DV9005 sku#882780910089 - $697
17" 1.6Ghz AMD 64x2

Toshiba P100-06X sku#623506013932 - $797
17" 1.7Ghz Core Duo <--I've deleted the link since it's wrong, updated the description.
This particular branch decided to package the laptops and other accessories into a larger/more expensive package, but perhaps you can buy them separately.

Caution the Toshiba link above is not correct..this Toshiba at Staples is a 1.7ghz Dual Core with 120Gig HD, the link above to a P100 is a different model..Core 2 Duo..
I went to my local Staples and the system shows The Toshiba at $897...I bought it anyways..comes with free printer and I get 5% back in GC for my wife's teacher Dividends a/c.....puts the price about $800 bucks..
What store did you see it in...I might call them to double check and try to price match if it is indeed $797 elsewhere...
My store had quite a few new clearance laptops at $597+ ..
