Anyone planning on buying this... remember AM2 CPU just had a price drop and Intel will in a couple of weeks.

Right now...
AMD 6000 (comparable to e6600)
~200
Mobo for it
~70 (690G)
320GB HD
~80
Burner
~30
Ram
~40-50 (for 1GB)
Case
~20-60 (with generic PSU... not like HP = better)

Total cost -OS ~450 so the deal is not bad but not great if you can build your own. If you like pre-built, this is a hot deal.

Well, managed to order one in Barrie with 2 x coupons for another $50 off. So if the price drops to $499 on the 11th, then final price to be $450. Not too shabby.

Mine arrived 10 minutes ago. Now to resist the urge to rip the box open. :D :D :D

What I don't understand is why clear out this model at this time of the year. The lowest price I can find anywhere is $625 USD at Amazon.com. Its not like this model is heavily discounted system wide so Staples has to play catchup again.

My local Staples puts upto a 48 hour hold on refunds for returned desktops. They automatically assume you are trying to rip them off by swapping parts and copying software.

This machine is a nightmare!, May 29, 2007 By Michael Fumento (Arlington, VA 22209) - See all my reviews

I have been buying computers since 1982, including desktops, laptops, and more recently for my wife. Each one has worked out of the box. This was the sole exception. The CD/DVD player crashed the system with each CD I tried to play. So after futzing with tech support for hours they finally sent a new unit. It, too, crashed the system with each disk. In the meantime the system simply corrupted itself on a daily basis. The next to go was media files from my hard drive. They, too, would randomly crash the system. Other files I formerly could simply click on now demanded debugging. Then suddenly the mail system decided that certain messages would not be deletable. Ever. I tried MS Vista restore to no avail. Nothing left but "System Recovery," which supposedly backs up new files and programs while restoring all software to its original state. But once in motion it DID NOT allow any backups. The button that would do so stayed shaded. Yet for all that the bugs started to slowly creep back in! This piece of junk goes back to HP!

Sound like case of dumb user to me. He try sound so confidint too.

At $499, it's definitely worth an upgrade. Since the a6010n comes with Vista Home Premium, it'll have all the media centre fuctionality built-in. Please make a note that this system does not come with a video tuner so you might want to pick one up as well.

I guess this computer is not on clearance for no reason. ;)

Called yesterday to CS about my order and CS rep told me it would be delivered today.

Got home from work and a message on my machine stating the item is out of stock and that it was a clearance item and I wouldn't be getting it.

Talk about LOUSY communication. Don't they know when u place the order or didn't they know when I called to inquire about my order.

Yikes!! Very disappointed with Stooooooples on this one. Might be the last time I deal with them.

Has anyone else had problem with there's? Everytime I install new software or reboot the computer it doesn't recognize the mouse and keyboard.

Is that a wonky motherboard? Or is that something else?

mine has been working flawlessly since it's first boot. Of course, it's been rebooted many times as I've been removing the junk software they put on these things (eg Norton) and then adding good things (eg AVG & Firefox)

I'd say you have a bad one, which is unfortunate cause I doubt they'd replace it (OOS), they'll just give you your money back.

Yeah, I got rid of the crap and ran an update...did a restart...then it wouldn't recognize the keyboard and mouse.

I'll see if they have another one...but if not...no sweat off my back, as I really didn't need this...(i'll keep telling myself that)

Get it fixed. You've got full warranty on it. If the deal is good enough it probably worth it.

Grrr I wish the store took these digit coupons lol. What a cheapskate eh? I would definitely buy it with $50 in coupons but OOS online.

They will order me one but at the $499 price.

Hmms...I might bite none the less.

Hmm...as I was packing it away to go return it. I found that the cord for the keyboard was partially cut. Which now explains why the keyboard only worked intermittently.

Do you think I could go back and ask for a new keyboard?

That's ok, thanks. I went and bought it anyways. I will give it a test run for 13 days and see what I think. If I am not happy I will return it.

Only reason being I have read alot about Vista and it's problems. I am hoping everything will work with Vista. ;)

The hard drive i got with my PC is a Seagate B. 10
The burner is a toshiba the ram Samsung PC 4200 and the worst is a 250W power supply. I still can't believe a company would install such garbage in a modern PC. I feel like installing plenty of hardware just to burn their cr@p so i can get an other one, and an other one .... for one year. Will still if it was worth it to save 5$ and no go with a 300w or 350W. Their version of windows vista is loaded with tons of useless software that makes the computer run like a turtle. The system is using ~650megs when none of my programs are running. That'san HP fresh install. The PC is pretty quiet but can't talk about speed until i format with a copied version of Vista. The layout of the motherbaord is also pretty nice almost looks like a btx.
The keyboard is nice but i don't like the feel of the keys and i won't talk about the ball mouse. If you can't apply coupons don't buy this computer, their are better deals elsewhere.

They don't give backup CDs/DVDs anymore. They give you a backup partition.

Well your truth is wrong. You make no sense. I don't work for Hp. Both Dell and Hp use part from other company. None of them make themselves. They just put together. Maybe futureshop have contract for resell refurb computer. I don't see no problem. How do you know they are return from mad customer? All I see is you make bs statement with no backup. Show me article which support you.

I like inexpensive HP boxes. They are quieter than boxes I build myself. And cheaper. They seem reliable enough.

I have three refurb HPs that are fine. Even though they were sold as "debranded" by CWO three years ago. Really inexpensive. I admit that this is anecdotal.

I am typing this on a non-refurb HP from what turned out to be a price error of Staples (1.5 years old). It is fine.

I have no idea why FS has so many refurbs. And a lot of the same models. It must be something to do with how HP refurbishes.. BB and FS are probably only willing to buy a big batch -- selling onesies and twosies doesn't fit their business model. Perhaps HP accumulates a batch and then auctions them to big retailers.

For desktops, my tentative opinion of desktops is:

Dell is OK but their pricing games are complex. I never wanted a P4 so they were out of the running for years.
I just bought a cheap Acer (CompuSmart closing). Seems noisier and not quite as well built as my HPs (but I don't have any HPs from this year to make the match fair)
the few old eMachines that I have are OK: not as bad as their reputation
I avoided IBM for years because of excessive proprietariness.
my old Compaq business-class PII machines seem very solid. More so than my PIII business-class Dells (but again, the Dells are slightly newer: perhaps price squeezes reduced mechanical quality)

I run Linux on all my machines so my experience is through a different lens from that of a MS Windows user. Vista is harder to ignore on the Acer: it comes occupying all four primary partitions on the hard drive! I haven't figured out how to pry it off without losing it or activating it.

I'm running this system now, on Vista, with the orig 1GB ram and am loving it.
Quietest system I've ever had. Once I add a DVI card and a wireless kb/mouse, I think I'll move the system into the next room so it'll be completely quiet :D

Hmmm I am noticing my web browsing running slower than my previous PC. I have installed an extra 1gb RAM but still finding it hiccupping.

I think may try and return it and get a faster processor. I think that must be the problem.

Or is Vista just plain Slow?

i would suggest you removing the add on like HP games, office and such...

i added 2GB ram, and i also turn off a lot of visual effect (my habit). I found the machine pretty fast.

So how much RAM in total do you have? How do I turn off all that stuff?

What I did notice was a big change when surfing with torrnet running and when torrent off.

I never had that problem on previous PC. Would another 1gb of RAM help or is this processor just not fast enough?
Thanks

i have 3 Gb in total, i think it's kind of kills though. I uninstall office, symantec firewall, the HP hotkey program, HP cap lock , real player... whatever..

you can turn off the display effects by editing the advance properties display property menu.
