i got the 500gb pro. as i mentioned in another forum it is great because you have both esata and usb option. it is built like a tank. the only flaw is it runs REALLY hot. people were saying that is a good sign since heat is being directed away from the drive. i still think this is worth it if you dont need the esata option

3 great reasons to buy at Future Shop.
1) If you find a lower advertised price we will beat it by 10% of the difference.
2) If you find a lower advertised price within 30 days* of your purchase we
will beat it by 10% of the difference.
3) If our own price is reduced within 30 days* of your purchase, bring in your
receipt and we will refund the difference.
Here’s how it works.
If you are purchasing today:
Present us with a copy of the competitor’s current ad.
Our associates will verify that the item is in stock and available for
immediate sale and delivery at the advertised price.
We will beat the competitor’s price by 10% of the difference.
If you purchase the item from futureshop.ca and there is no Future Shop in your area you can contact us at 1-800-663-2275 or by email at websupportcan@futureshop.com
I would classify Best Buy as a competitor because it is a different business in the same industry. Even if they are legally the same company, they still opporate in different devisions making them "competitors" in the industry. I'd go back and demand 10%

I picked up this drive a few months ago, as I needed the internal drive, and noticed it
was one of the newer seagate 250GB drives with the full 5 year warranty, and 16MB cache.
Decent deal, even to use as an internal...(maybe not now with the recent internal drive price drops....)

I think you can get HBC points from both Zellers and the Bay, and use your points in both stores. I would assume you can use giftcards in both stores too.
$80 for 250gb external hd. I might pick up one just to have another portable mp3 collection.

I got one a while ago and its properties report:
WDC WD25
So... I would assume that means Western Digital , however I am not certain if Comstar just buys from the cheapest bidder, so maybe one run to the next could be different drives.

Thanks yes WD = Western Digital, and if i read correctly on the web site it is only 2 meg of Cache only instead of 8 or 16

There are a lot of Comstar 250GB 3.5" External Hard Drives (35) in FS at North land village mall. I grapped one and it works fine. Only remaraks, it is heavy and needs external power.

Ya...
If/when FS/BB say they won't PM 'cause they're the Same company, then tell the sales person that you want to use a FS coupon or GiftCard at BB or vice versa. They usually change their tone pretty quick. :P :D
I hate their shady business practices!!!

lincoln is right, you should demand that they give you back your hard earned money to which you are completely and legitimately entitled to according to their very own policy.

I'm pleasantly suprised to see FS had left the online reviews alone b/c they seem very critical in general on the Comstar drive. though some people also trouble free units?
spinbot
Jul 16th, 2007, 05:30 PM
Mine has been trouble free, however it isn't "stressed" as I only turn it on when I need it. It's not like my internal SATA drives that spin 24/7 uploading/downloading "stuff".
If I recall correctly, one thing to note -- before you use it, RE-FORMAT it to NTFS as the drive came as FAT32.

um.. what's the benefit to reformatting it? I have no clue how to reformat it.

NTFS is a more efficient file system. Also, if you are using it to store large files ( like ISO's of DVDs ), FAT32 has issues with storing anything ( I believe ) over 4GB.
You can format it by going to Control Panel, Adminstrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage, Disk Management

I got the comstar drive. Tested it with a diagnostic tool only to end up receiving a list of I/O errors. I am thinking the best thing is just return it and get that WD instead!
bottom line, deal was nice but product didn't deliver. :(

unless u are using it to plug into ur dvd player, then u need fat32. ntfs doesnt work.

huh? Drive works perfectly in NTFS. FAT32 was limiting as you couldn't move ISO's over 4GM from other drives on it.

No, you need a 2.5" laptop HD.

No, you need a 2.5" laptop HD.
Only if you want to install it internally. Otherwise, it should work fine plugged into the USB ports. It does have to formatted in a PS3 friendly format though.

I suggest you format it as EXT3 or ReiserFS instead. :P
