I've heard some great stories of people getting hundred of bucks knocked off their Dell computer. How do you guys convince the sales rep to do it? I tried getting a discount on the Dimension 9200 today over the phone with several reps without any luck (there is already an instant savings on it online, though).

back when the dell 24" monis were $800+tax a piece, I got 2 of them for $1600 shipped.
Point is, their sales reps are people in Indians looking to make a living, learn to manipulate them.
It's hard to teach someone how to be able to take advantage of peoples goals - you either have it or you don't as far as I'm concerned, go read up on social engineering a bit.. it may help.

Actually, every system has a lowest possible price that Dell can possibly sell it for. When I bought my Dell laptop, the person I was speaking to tried to go down in 2$ denominations until he couldn't go down any lower. The laptop I wanted to buy costed 1300. I asked if he could bring it down to 1200, and then 1250. Neither worked. I then asked for 1270, which worked. After that he kept trying to find the lowest possible price, which ended up being 1258. His system wouldnt let him bring down by even another 50c. Anyways, so it's not all up to the rep you're talking to - it obviously has to be within the profit margins acceptable be Dell. If the thing you want to buy is already heavily discouted, you probably wouldn't be able to get much off...which is probably why it didnt work for you.

Try going to a mall with an outlet at the end of months. Its generally easier there in person. More so since they know for a fact you are most likely interested and will buy if the price is right and its the end of the month so they might be in need of sales.

I don't believe stories like this. Whenever I ask for any sort of discount, I usually just get shot down or I'm told about a sale coming up in like a month or something.

Thats your choice because you're the one missing out. From standard prices, you can almost always get $50 discount just by asking (for things above 1k, never tried less because i generally buy parts online, only systems > 1k by phone/Oakridge mall outlet).
Of course to get a good price, you should know what a reasonable price for each part is. If you are not upgrading parts or do not know how low the reps can go, you will be limited to around 100 saving max (and thats if you have a good rep). If you know how low some of the systems have been sold for and the cost it will be for Dell (as well as ask at good times), you can get great deals. Just remember each Dell rep needs to meet X number of sales each month. If they don't, they will lose their jobs so they will take less commission to get a sale at end of months if they need sales.
