I was thinking about maybe buying a Honda Accord Coupe V6 1998-02 model.
What do you guys think about this car?
Is it reliable? Is there transmission problems? or general problems with the car?
Would it be bad to buy an Accord with 150 000kms on the engine:confused:
Let me know what you guys think...
Thanks in advance:!:

Check for tranny problems. Otherwise, I love the look

Is there any way to check for tranny problems other than the obvious which is bringing it to the shop?

I doubt even shop could detect any problems in testing. Thats the risk you take by going with years in the transmission problem years. Mind you, not every car is affected.
Check LemonCarAid book.

Or just buy a manual and not risk buying one with a faulty auto tranny.

The V6 is not available with the stick-shift.

Wasn't there some kind of recall or something for it? It would be easy to check the owners records and see if it's had tranny work done under warranty?

great car, had my 98 coupe until recently when i sold it with 210,000kms. a few minor issues i.e. alternator, egr valve. the transmission is the major problem, mine got progressively worse and the shift from 1st to 2nd could get really rough at times.
honda only offered extended warranties on the 99s and up and only upto 175,000kms. if you're interested in one, avoid the 98s.
if you take one out on a test drive, push it really hard at acceleration and feel how hard the shift from 1st to 2nd is.

then again, you have to spend $$ on clutch jobs! I have seen more of my friends waste their $$ on clutch work as opposed to auto transmission jobs!

I have an 02 Accord EX V6. Car is pretty much perfect besides two issues:
1. Automatic Transmission
2. Alternator
Those are the two issues that will cause any problems with this car. My car drags in 1st gear and shifts harshly into 2nd. I can expect a tranny replacement coming up in the coming year. The alternator is another common issue, it tends to go. I had mine replaced a few thousand KMs ago. Besides that, nothing really big to consider. The car eats gas though (V6), front wheels spin alot when you floor it, and thats bout it. Also the CD player is complete garbage and is best used to hurl at other people than in this car. The car is solid though, driven through several blizzards and -50C weather in Winnipeg and yet to have any issue besides the two listed above.

Had a 99 one with close to ~300k on it when i sold it. EX v6 (fully loaded with roof , leather etc).
Loved that car! I actually got quite some complements from people who drive benz and bmw - after sitting in the car. Its extremely roomy and excellent ride. all repairs are extremely cheap.
Transmission wasn't as smooth as it should be, its not the high clicks though - i know people with same car (v4 and i4) and none are super smooth especially from 1st to 2nd.
One way to check trasnsmission (for auto) is to smell the transmission fluid (from dip stick is in engine). It shouldn't smell really bad (assuming it hasn't been changed). Try different speeds of changing 1st to 2nd gear ... thats usually the first to go when trasnmission has issues.
Are you buying private or dealer? Dealer gives you warranty on trasnmission / engine anyway.

Ha, thats actually true. When my cousin came to Winnipeg, he was suprised at the Accord and the quietness (he drives an S500) of the car. Only thing that got kinda annoying, was the noise when you open the sunroof at cruising speeds, and the owner before me had a cheap woodkit on it which killed the interior for me.

Take it for what its worth. The tranny is gonna be as good as how it was taken care of.
My family has a 1998 Honda Accord 4cyl and tranny has had no problems thus far. Really smooth shifting and no weird things wrong with it. Shifter cable never rusted out as well as of yet... Car is already hitting 220K. No problems. Maintained regularly as per manual.

Dad has a '02 SE v6. It's going on 180ks? Nothing major with it, still drives very well for a very driven car. Can't really see anything wrong with the 02.

If you know how to drive or don't abuse the car, a few hundred $$$ clutch every 7-10+ years is pretty minimal.
We've got an 00 with a 5spd and it is incredibly solid, although a 4Cyl vtec.
My folks bought a 98 V6/Auto brand new and haven't had an issue with it. Then again, they're not exactly ricers either.

I can't recall if it was maxima or accord (probably true for both). The wood trim is just a plastic STUCK ON. You can just pluck it off. Ya I didn't feel the trim on those cars either.

You mean weak as it breaks down more? or weak as in , it doesn't have enf power?
98+ accord is considerably bigger and heavier, that may be effecting its pull?

I think its "weaker" because its not v6 and the 98-02 accords are heavier than the older year versions..

i love accords. however, my personal preference is to try and find the lowest mileage possible. good luck on your hunt for one.

i'll chime in ... definitely the 6th gen coupes r one of the sexiest looking cars around, just too bad we have that POS AUTOTRAGIC...IF u find a great shifting car, all the power to u! 200bhp but the car lacks low end torque when NOT stock  check out v6p.net or torontoaccords.com if u wanna know more bout this car....
cheers GL

Your friends suck and are weaksauce on manual's if that's true. If it's a daily Driver car, theres NO reason why the clutch shouldn't last a good 200 - 250k even with some aggressive shifting here and there. My civics clutch is only at 215 k and I punch it pretty good sometimes and it's smooth shifting.
Friend of mine owns a 98 accord with about 230 k on it and he started noticing the tranny issue with it. I agree, if you're looking at this year of car still, beat down on the pedal and see how the shifting is.
Course, ask the obvious if the tranny fluid, filter and gasket have been replaced at the required maintaince schedule
