Hi everyone,

i need your opinion. I have a 2003 VW Golf, black and i want to tint the windows, but i'm not sure which looks better, lighter driver & passenger windows and darker in the back, or should i have all the windows tinted the same?? I have never done this before and i really don't know which to pick, so i wanted some opinions. Thanks!!:D

for looks, I think it looks much better when all of the windows match

Practically, having the front lighter usually works out better ... especially when it comes to police harassment. The front windows can't be too dark while the rear can be as dark as you want ...

I personally did mine all the same ... but I have had friends that have recieved tickets for having too dark a tint in the front ... I haven't yet, but I almost expect it to happen

I have a 2000 VW Golf. I bought it brand new and took it to "FX Auto" in Markham to have it tinted a few weeks after I bought it. Since I had been warned about getting a ticket for illegal tint, I asked them to put legal tint on the front windows and then go two levels darker on the rest of the windows. They refused. They said it would look stupid and they were not willing to let their tinting job make a car look bad since it would ruin their reputation. So they told me to choose whether I wanted to go with legal tint on all the windows or go darker. I decided to go with the darker (illegal) tint. I have driven the car for 7 years now and have never been harassed by the cops. On the occassions that I have been stopped by the cops for speeding (twice), RIDE spot checks (6 times) and random stops (3 times), I have simply lowered my driver's window all the way down and turned on my interior dome light.

I'd say to go with the darker tint. It will look nicer.

Going dark on a black doesn't look that good, you'll have this drug-dealer look to your car. With black I would go with 35% all around, nice and classy.

I have 35% (lowest front tint allowed by convention in ON) on my front windows and 5% on my rear and backlight. Way back when I got it tinted I was worried about the contrast between the front and rear as well. But it actually looks fine that way IMO. Because of the lower light level coming in from the rear, it makes the front appear darker as well, which evens it out a bit more than you think. Plus on smaller cars like your Golf I would think it is even less noticeable of a contrast front to rear.

The less sun you have penetrating in there the less hot your car will be when left parked out on a hot/sunny summer day. It still gets damn hot in there, no doubt, but get in a car parked in the same place that has no tint (or even lighter tint) and you definitely notice the difference. Also the headlights of other cars behind you are much less annoying at night as glare is significantly reduced in your rearview (can't do anything about side mirrors of course though, heh).

I would say go for a similar tint (35% up front, as dark as you can in the rear) but it's up to you of course. I don't think it looks bad or strange at all, and I've never had anyone tell me that either.
