Proper Disposal of Engine Oil

I am planning to change my car's engine oil myself; does anyone know where to dispose of the used oil in Toronto?

I've been told by others, Canadian Tire will take back the oil.

Always properly dispose of your oil! Pouring into the storm drains, the sewers or your sink is a terrible thing to do. The storm drain water doesn't get treated the same way, so it's going to end up directly in our water systems. Pouring it into your sinks is asking for plumbing problems and it wrecks the filtering system for the city!

I just take it to Canadian tire, walk into the service area and ask the guys nicely.

I used to take my used oil, poured it into a 4L windsheild washer jug and then leave it in front of the doorstep of a fairly large mechanics garage!!!:lol: :lol: :lol:

Local landfills should take it no problem. I took roughly 120 L last fall and had no problem.

It's amazing how many people don't know where to take oil to dispose of it. It's really easy and it's free. Just take it to one of your city's hazardous waste places (some of which have been outlined here already by others), during their hours and drop it off. Simple as that. Never paid any fees, they just take it from you gladly (they definitely prefer that than you putting it in the drain which I agree is NOT funny).

Even in smaller cities I've lived in, there's always a hazardous waste place. Maybe not really small towns but most cities will have one or more depots for stuff like oil, coolant, brake fluid, etc.

One time I was at a local Wal-Mart and some guy came in with oil wanting to dispose of it and the lady was like "no we don't do that". Then the service guy came in and said "oh no we do but you have to pay the disposal fee, it's $2.00 for every 5L". So I told the guy, "hey there's a hazardous waste depot right up the road from here, and it's free" but he refused to listen to me :rolleyes: It didn't help that some other clown told him that "they charge you there too", when I know they don't because I've gotten rid of oil tons of times at places like that...

Another guy even tried to tell him to go to Canadian Tire and they would take it for free, and that was across the road, but he still ended up paying Wal-Mart like $4.00 to get rid of his used oil. He just wanted to get rid of it at Wal-Mart for some reason, I guess, LOL.
