View Full Version : Why is Costco so expensive?

gamer4Life
Jul 2nd, 2007, 01:35 PM
I did a price check on various items found around Costco vs items found at RCSS and Save On Foods -- I found most things at Costco are more expensive or roughly the same per unit price.

I've always figured that they were cheaper because you buy in bulk and because you pay for "membership", as well as having a very warehouse type feel to their stores. They must make a killing on overcharging people for their foods.

I compared all sorts of meat with Save-on, and Save-on came out cheaper all the time. The only thing cheaper at Costco was the HP steak sauce. I'm sure there are other items that Costco is cheaper at, but if my sample is accurate, then it's not really worth going to shop at Costco for food, let alone paying a membership fee.

Does anybody know the meats they sell at Save-on? I assume they're AAA, not that I know what the difference is.

Check the labels on the meat at grocery stores. You will rarely find AAA beef. Usually it says A-AA. When it has the A-AA range on the packaging chances are that it's only A grade and a very small percentage of the run would be AA. A is the lowest grading and AAA is the highest. Costco's beef is always AAA and most of it is also prime grade as well which means it's the grade of meat that one would usually find at a high end butcher of a really good restaurant...

You took the words right out of my mouth!! We never buy grocery store meat, we buy organic in St Jacobs, but I will from Costco.

Also, compare Orange Juice and bread. You will find a massive saving.

Absolutely...it was when the kids were on Homo that my Costco addiction started! ;)

Can't forget about the clothing area either! I buy sweat socks and a pack of JoeBoxers for dh every time I am in! Where else can you find $30 Dockers and Jeans under $12 for the kids?

Costco used to be great years ago, when there was very little competition in general.
There was simply no better place to buy appliances/televisions/mattresses even computers. Nearly everything was cheaper.

Most food is still a little cheaper as far as I know...

Now their prices are just "reasonable/warm".

Anyone else still call it Club Price? :D

Yeah it's true that No Frills and RCSS can match them for prices. I think most people just shop their to a) get their cash rebate on the black card b) cash rebate on both black and platinum cards c) they just like the selection or d) it's just more convenient. I know there's a Costco closer to me than RCSS or Walmart superstore.

Oh, and the return policy ;)

Yeah, my family's always been big on the meat at Costco. Their meat is top notch and the price is pretty good too considering the quality.

I was wondering, me and my fam always go to Costco to do "wholesale" shopping but I've never been to the other large wholesale company, Sam's Club. Anyone know if Sam's Club is comparable in terms of prices, products etc.? I've always been curious because i never hear ppl. talk about Sam's Club, most ppl. i know all go to Costco still.

And it's not that Costco is expensive, its that other stores are following the same model of large quantities at very low margins.

We go there once a month, what I find are good prices are: over the counter medications, sauces, canned veggies (tomatoes), meats, books, zip loc bags, breads, and frozen foods.

I find Costco is ok, they have a good selection of gifts.

But for regular food, esp frozen items they are not cheaper.
Food basics just had a sale on frozen Stoufers skillets and I paid $1 a package, Costco would probably be $5.

Costco does have cheap Starbucks coffee, but not sure how "real" it is, as they only have one kind.

I don't live near Costco anymore so don't shop there.
But I do miss the fast food section where they had the giant ice cream cones and fries

We used Sam's for a year, but because it was not convenient location wise, went back to Costco. Pricing is about $0.01 different either way, and the selection is very similar. The one thing I do miss is WonderBread and the mini croissants (Costco doesn't offer either). They also seemed to have a great selection of clothes and seasonal items. I have to admit I enjoyed Sam's, and if they were closer, I probably would have both memberships. ;)

You have to wait in those huge lineups just for one item? There's always one person who always looks funny carrying one item in hand while waiting at the cash lineup. :)

Why doesn't Costco have express lines for people with very little items???

I have both costco and sam's, and I find that the groceries and meat I buy at costco are always better quality than sam's. Manufactured goods are almost the same, except for in house brand, where costco is the winner again.

Uhmmm... we go through a minimum of a 4 litre bag of milk a day in this house, more often than not, 2 bags. When we run in for milk only, we buy 5-10 bags depending on when we are planning to cross the border again to buy 10 or 15 gallons of milk. ;)

Just wondering, where did you get the information that Costco meats are AAA? Also, is there a grading system for chicken as well? Because Save-on and RCSS are both cheaper.

As for other things, like canned fish, 1 L juice, cereal, it's actually more expensive, and you get the inconvenience of buying so many at a time. With other stores you can just buy as many as you need.

Carefully read the labels both on the meat itself and at the meat counter. All the information is there, it has to be by law. ;) Canned fish (tuna in particular) is much cheaper at Costco when buying the institutional size. Cereal is cheaper as well, for instance the large box of Shreddies is $7.99 at Zehrs and it's usually $5.99 at Costco. We only buy "healthy" creals, no sugary junk. Costco is not for everyone, especially singles who don't like to shop in bulk. For those of us with families who only shop in bulk we come out way ahead.

I was always wondering about that. When I go to Costco, there's almost always one or two people with either a cart or a flatbed absolutely full of milk. I figured that they were convenience store operators, but now I know, they just like milk!

Seriously, I go there two or three times per week, for (at least) the milk: we have one- and three-year-old girls, so milk is definitely a staple product here. Bread, meat, yogurt, and lots of other products are similarly well priced, and their weekly coupons & sales help. It's true, for many products you can do better elsewhere, but ask yourself this: have you ever purchased crap from Costco? I don't think I ever have -- it's always superior quality stuff.

Cause they want you to buy more!

Costco is the closest store to me ... I can actulaly walk there, where I would have to drive to any other grocery/convenient store. So, I've done the one item purchase several times ... you just have to know when to go.

I prefer buying at places like Reids dairy.. it's cheap and good and for me tastes better.. plus as a bonus they have $0.99 1L chocolate milk as regular price and also $1 milk shakes! :)

Their pharmacy is much cheaper than a local SDM, dispensing fee is only $4.99

i dont find costco to be all that expensive, sure there are some items that are comparable in price to other stores, but when an item goes on sale its really a good buy.

there are certain things i stock up on when they are on sale and then i dont need them again until they are on sale. you cant beat the sale price of ziplock bags!! and thats only one example of many.

like others have said, the meat is great. i buy whole pork loins, and i've not seen them in a regular store on sale for cheaper then regular price at costco.
the whole chickens, 3 to a bag, are a great price and huge in size. they work out to $6-7 each.
steaks i normally buy at the butcher because i prefer to buy fresh and dont need a big package, but costco is the only other place i would buy them.

not to mention clothes and housewares, not only great prices, but lots of things you wont see in other stores.

and dont get me started on the jewelery ;)

We used to buy our milk always at Costco when it used to be around $3.60 or less...then we switched to SDM, since it's pretty much the same now...plus Costco is not around the corner either... Now whenever we go to Costco, we make it into a "trip" :D

I noticed that many everyday items can be found for the same price elsewhere...of course there are exceptions...but I was actually thinking of canceling our membership & would just share one with my mom

I'd be curious to see the actual brands and prices you are comparing.

I've found that, for the most part, Costco is always equal to or lower than any other stores regular price. This makes it great for many of us that don't have time to shop 4 different stores for a sale price.

Sure the Kirkland brand can't compete with the No-Name brand, but it's not meant to because the quality is different.

AAA is a much higher quality meat, highest rating in Canada in fact. You'll taste the difference when you put it in your mouth.

I doubt Save On Foods sell AAA meat - it's much more expensive. AFAIK, only Longos, Loblaws, Dominion, and Sobeys sells AAA meat apart from Costco. All the other cheaper places sell AA or lower.

We buy a whole Rib eye or a whole top sirloin, you can save about $4-6/kg if you cut and wrap it yourself. We have a vacuum sealer for this.

We've never had a bad steak in 5 yrs.

Also, the prices for books is very good. Always head to Costco before a vacation, to pick up a book.

The prices on clothes is pretty good. Tommy, CK and Dockers cotton pants are always about $20 less than everywhere else. Nike Coolmax shirts for under $20 is pretty decent.

Yes, some products are more expensive - I think u can get a case of pop cheaper elsewhere.

This is an interesting comparison:

http://www.debtfreegrad.com/new_mr/mr_current/mr_may_2002/FS_warehousechart_may02.htm

It's a few years old, but I bet it is still relevant. From the looks of it to me, Costco is cheaper with some items and more expensive with others. It seems to even out. Overall, it's probably not worth getting a membership.

Also, if you take into account that RCSS has supercheap generic items, then you come out way ahead there. I challenge anyone to tell the difference between PC cola and Coke. When it's on sale, you can get a 24 pack for $3.99.

Do you pre-freeze it a bit before vacuuming? I had an issue last time that all the blood was sucked from the meat... I'll try pre-freezing next time.

I was recently given a membership as a gift after staying away for a few years. I was pretty disappointed to see that at least half of what we would have bought was more expensive, or the same price, as our normal stores. Milk was the same as shoppers, produce was way overpriced, general grocery and frozen was the same or more (as in the case of yogurt, cereal, bread, buns, toothpaste etc.).

I agree on the meat - it's great quality. But that doesn't make the membership worth it. I hold on to my Sam's one for cross-border shopping, and Costco is certainly handy for buying cases of microbrew beer in the states, but I couldn't justify to myself renewing on my own dime.

I think a lot of people are in the mindset that Costco is cheaper on everything and don't bother to actually analyze prices like a true RFDer would (down to the price per ounce/pound/kg/diaper/wipe/tube/etc.)

A lot of things are cheaper, like Pizza Pops, pogos, milk, cereal, dry goods, detergent, books, chocolate and on and on. I find their seasonal items to also be very good, like the Callaway golf gloves 3 for 20$ where elsewhere it would be ~15$ each and their Vitamins. Also, it is a good place to buy huge packs of socks and other clothing. It only works if you have a large family, at least 4-5, to take advantage of the frozen stuff and huge packages of everything.

I still don't understand why their Coca cola is so expensive though.

That's because most Costco shoppers don't pay for the membership just for groceries - that's not the point. We use our membership for electronics, books, medicine/perscriptions, photo, and of course the free samples. The groceries is just a convenience spinoff.

You pay more because you are guaranteed satisfaction, can return practically anything at practically anytime (which includes, implicitly, great price protection - in case a Costco item drops in price within say six months), and don't need to spend extra for extended warranties (generally - as most problems happen in the first year and you can usually get Costco to take care of that for you).

If you're going to compare Costco prices to places like Loblaws, etc and that's it for your comparison then you're barking up the wrong tree already.

Costco is especially great for electronics and computer shoppers

costco doesn't have a price policy. You could probably find almost everything in their store cheaper elsewhere, if you tried hard enough. But MOST of the prices will be lower than the majority of competitors, that's why people buy food there. Your not gonna drive to 12 different stores because they have a sale on different types of fruit.

It's not written anywhere that costco MUST be cheaper than all other stores on ALL times.

Plus RCSS and Loblaws only have a 14 day return/exchange policy which is nothing compared to most of the big stores.

I know my printer ink is cheaper at costco (66$) for a canon mp530. It's always been cheaper than staples. The pricing at staples is stupid though, since the 2 packs aren't even cheaper than buying 2 single packs.. Which to me makes no sense.. Discount in bulk anyone?

Anyhow, costco stocks colour packs (Canon CLI-8 Colour Ink Combo Pack) with a Canon Black Ink Cartridge (PGI-5BK). I remember that these cost 65$ plus 22$ (for the black cartridge) at other stores. So I'm saving around 21$ each purchase. I know i could be saving money refilling my cartridges or using knock offs, but I've had colour issues when I got mine refilled on my epson.

Costco has a policy of low margin profits, which in the U.S. I believe is somewhere around 6%, which is absurdly low in my opinion.

I assume Costco Canada is somewhat similar, but our dollar is probably helping their margins quite a bit. I wonder, if it stays up, will local Costco prices drop?

P.S. I forgot to mention their optical pricing, it is very sharp compared to an optometrist!!

Also, does the tire centre do wheel alignment? I hope so, since Crappy Tire charges 83 bucks for two-wheel alignment!

I guess it's not a question of is Costco expensive but rather, does it offer good value? The Dollar store is cheaper than Costco and RCSS but do you really want inferior quality meat or toothpaste?

For the $4.58 a month that membership costs, I feel I get this back many times over. The many benefits of being a member are definitely worth it for me.
i.e. $9.99 propane refill, high quality photofinishing (with $1.99 8x10), $27.00 oil changes, $1.99 hotdog and pop, free samples, low drug dispensing fee, AAA meats, cheap bestseller books, and the occasional hot deal ($29.97 rollerblades)

All of that, plus the best return policy in the business.

Although, Costco may not be the cheapest, it does offer great value.

Did you try to shake the big jug? Big jug means the good stuff go to the bottom easier and the top portion to be diluted, just like any big jug of almost anything which is liquid from any store.

I doubt this would happen. A very small percentage of the cost of product is the actual soap, so there would be little incentive to dilute the product and reduce its effectiveness and potentially lose customers. Most of the cost of the product is shipping, packaging, marketing..etc.

before i used the costco jug, a few drops usually did a bunch of dishes. the costco stuff took alot more.

Aside: whats the point of regular when they have the space-age technical ability to make a highly concentrated liquid? I think having a smaller bottle that does the same job as a jug is better value, and less weight.

Just like everything else, regular is cheaper for the same volume. Consumer feels it is a better deal.

e.g. you have a concentrated version for $3. Your competitor has a regular version for $.99. Consumer will probably notice the $2 difference and buy your competitor's. If you also have a regular version, you cover that segment of customer.

Also, it depends on how many disc you wash too. For 1 dish, a drop of concentrated may be too much. A drop of regular may be perfect.

People hate it when companies eliminate products. You may hate Palmolive regular, but I'm sure some people out there love it.

I'm pretty sure that is what happened, I've seen the big jugs of regular dish detergent at Costco. The ultra is sold in smaller jugs.

So very true.

Something might be a little cheaper at another store but can you really put a price on the product satisfaction that Costco provides.

Case in point. In May I buy a 160gig portable HD for $129.99. In June I notice that it has been reduced in price to $119.99 so I go to the service desk and get a $10 + tax price adjustment refund. This week it is offered for $99.99 ($20 off) with a coupon. I again go to the service desk and without question they give me a $20 refund. Name me one other store that would do that.

This is why I shop at Costco. Their service is second to none.

I find Costco great for certain things.

As someone already mentioned - there prices for printer ink are the best I've seen.

The wife is a scrapbooker, and they have had deals on scrapbook paper and Fiskar's scissors that were less then half of what you would pay anywhere else.

Cleaning supplies also seem to be on sale often, and since you can never have too much laying around, I appreciate being able to buy it in volume.

I actually find their electronics prices very hit-and-miss - when they have a deal, it's usually very good. When they don't, there price is very average. Of course, knowing you will have no hassle if something goes wrong with a big-ticket electronics purchase - fantastic.

As for the "everyday" groceries, you have to have a clue what things cost elsewhere. Also, double-check the volume since sometimes you're paying the 'regular' price for 150% the volume. And sometimes your paying 150% the price for 100% the volume (rarely, but it happens). Also, I make note of the coupons, as Costco coupons are generally a good savings - not saving 10 cents here and there.

And I've also found their meat to be great tasting. The 3-pack whole chickens are fantastic. Mmmm, BBQ rotisserie chicken...

Nice troll. We know your not a fan of costco and that you don't feel its good value but for many of us it is. The point is that although Costco is not always the cheapest on every item, it offers great overall value. i.e. Quality, Pricing, Service. The cheapest price isn't the only factor for most people, overall value is.

Well, I have the executive membership so it works out to be free, given the amount I spend. I go weekly for the staples - milk, eggs, bread, juice, and that stuff really adds up . For the other stuff, I know I can maybe get it a little cheaper if I waited and drove all over the place, but I can get it when I need at Costco without the hassle.

Like anywhere else, you have to know your prices. There are some amazing deals at Costco and some not so good deals. I don't buy canned goods, toilet paper and such at Costco because you can generally find it on sale cheaper elsewhere and I stock up when on sale. You will get good everyday prices on these items but not great prices. There are great deals on clothes, electronics, books, car batteries, small appliances, vitamins, contact lenses and glasses and so much more. Costco is also a fun place to shop as you never know what you'll find.

Their toilet paper is good quality! My roommate is probably even cheaper than most people here. She always buys thin, one-ply toilet paper.

That said, I try to buy regular house goods when they are on sale/coupon. If you can wait it out, these things will eventually be discounted at Costco.

I agree with you completely though. I'm not after the CHEAPEST or BEST deals. And I'm okay with paying a little more for some things if that means one-stop shopping (else I would have to go to Sobey's for the meat that's on sale, Zellers for the toilet paper, etc, etc). Most things are a good and decent price.

Great deals can be had with the weekly discounts and coupons. A lot of the stuff I buy are 'weekly specials'. It's also therapeutic to go to Costco regularly. I know where everything and I have a routine. I start by going to the watch display case to look at a Burberry watch  , then to clothing, books, and eventually to the food.

Kitty litter - Can't speak for the kitty litter as i have a dog.
2kg box of granola for cheaper than Costco? - Most likely Bulk Barn or any other bulk food store.
Tortellini 3 pack, you don't mention fresh, frozen or brand. But almost ever grocery store beats those prices. By alot.
rye bread - I love my rye bread. $1.39 a loaf local bakery. Easy to find for under 1.79

Agreed. Some examples:

Salmon: A large pack that can be cut up to make 4-5 fillet steaks cost $14. Buying one piece alone from dominion is around $5/each.

SD Cards: About two months ago, a 2GB sandisk ultraII flash card was $39. All the computers stores in the area (tiger direct, canada computers) was selling the same card between $45-55.

Ribena Concentrated juice mix: $6.99 at costco. I believe nofrills was selling for $7.99 at no frills and T&T.

2-ton car jack and 2 stands: $20 at costco. Everywhere else (walmart, cdn tire) this set sells for at least $30.

Even over the course of 12 months, the membership fee paid for itself and more.

Costco has some products I like that I can't find other places. Their sports socks seem to be of higher quality then ones at RCSS or superstore. They used to sell these boxes that had 4 Thai curry kits in them that I liked (but they seem to have stopped selling them). Sometimes there's a good deal on electronics or a giant folgers coffee.

I find most of the time though, RCSS is cheaper and they do that by selling smaller multiples (which is rather odd). Costco used to be super cheap 10-15 years ago.. but now I just go there because they carry some stuff I can't find elsewhere.

I do like the packs for sanyo rechargable batteries.. i've bought about 3 of those now.. power lots of stuff in the house :)

i don't know if i'm annoyed by the lines more...or the rest of the stupid sheep waiting patiently in the line.

i too did not renew

My mother trained me early by having me stand in line at Expo 67 (those were waits of up to six hours). Then all we got was gov't propaganda from around the world, at Costco we get nice toys.

Just a small warning.

I had to evaluate the employees at a Costco last week and some of them were really not good.

A few of the food stand emplyees actually told me the dish- antipasto I was trying was "really good and all vegetables" now I hate fish unless it is fresh, never buy canned stuff...

So, when i actually picked up the package I saw TUNA was an ingredient.
They also did not have their food alleregy warning labels out..another mistake!

So, if you have any food issues, be careful as the people they hire seem to be a lot of "non english" speaking people.

Thankfully I am not allergic to fish.

Also another lady tried the same dish at the same time and she was very mad the lady at the counter told her it was vegetables only.....really not cool!

Those food sample workers are from an outsourced company...I sometimes question their handling practices, so I go for selective samples (aka Jelly Belly beans)
