You'd think they could bother to warn everyone they're closed on Canada Day rather than have people drive miles out of town to find out when they get there.

My local Costco was open today. You should've went and called - Canada Day is a public holiday, all stores are supposed to be closed unless designated as a "tourist's attraction".

This is BC, everything is open, except, Costco. We went during their usual Sunday hours, as did many others who made the procession past the door looking for their Canada Hours or any other indication when they'd be open. There was NOTHING.

What? Did you expect them to give you a personal phone call? Did you call the info line to check holiday hours? Costco do close their stores on a number of holidays throughout the year.

Costco in BC usually close on holidays. It is common knowledge. Boxing Day, Costco was closed.

I second you.

Went to costco today and it was closed.

There was nothing on their website about holiday hours. I would assume they would open because everything else is open!

Sorry, OP for the misfortune of having Costco be closed today - that's too bad.

In Ontario is the statutory holiday falls on a Sunday then the holiday is observed the next day. (i.e. that day is the one where retail stores need to close officially). That is why most stores were open today but will be closed on Monday (Except in tourist areas, etc)

Costco was closed on the May LW as well. I know it might have been frustrating to drive a distance to find that out, but do you really think it's their fault?

really...how do you expect them to warn you that they're closed on a holiday, have a rep give you a call? that would probably just irritate you if you didn't plan on going there, imagine that every single store that you have a membership at or has your info called you just to tell you that they wont be open on a holiday, you would probably snap...it's a holiday so you should assume that ALL stores are closed, and check before you head over to one

+1

If you call, their automated telephone system would've told you the holiday hours.

Plus, with public holidays like this, assume everything's closed. Anything opened is a bonus. Personally, I was surprised that most stores were observing today instead of yesterday, as in the past this wasn't allowed on most public holidays.

Costco is always closed on all stats in BC, always has been. Besides, when you call them there is voice message prompt selection for store hours or holiday store hours. I think they should be open today.

The only holidays were everything is closed in BC are Christmas and New Years. I was reasonable to expect Costco would be open regular Sunday hours, since every other place around here was. And how hard would it have been to put their holiday hours on their website if things were different for Canada Day? I shouldn't need to make a phone call. Also, there were about twenty others that drove up the same time we did, expecting them to be open. This isn't freeking Ontario after all.

Like their stock, their hours can vary from location to location and province to province. I suggest that next time you find yourself in such a dilemma, look for the device in your home that looks like this.

Jul 1st is a stat and if they were to be open they would have to pay their employees 1.5x. A stat takes precedent over any day in the week, at least in BC. They can remain open or closed as they see fit.

I think it's wrong for any stores to be open on Canada Day. I really hate this business of observing holidays on the next business day. It's fine for a business that is not normally open on Sunday but for businesses that open Sunday, they should observe the holiday that day. Canada Day is July 1 not July 2. It is also unfair to the employees who get stuck working on Canada Day and miss the Canada Day events and then get the next day off for the holiday when the events are over. End of rant.

Exception

Under the federal Holidays Act, Canada Day is always observed on July 1 unless that date falls on a Sunday, in which case July 2 is the statutory holiday, although celebratory events generally take place on July 1 even though it is not the legal holiday.

If it falls on a Saturday, the following Monday is generally also a day off for those businesses ordinarily closed on Saturdays.

Canada has 9 Stat holidays:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_holidays_in_Canada

For all 9 of these days, stores should be closed, with the exception of Boxing Day, just because of the nature of the sales. I can't see why you claim BC only has two. Are stores open on Rememberance Day? Victoria Day? Go figure.

Store hours are not posted on the website because they differ from store to store, and the opening hours are at manager's discretion. Obviously, they can't give every Costco store's manager access to the corporate national website, lol.

there is a very little sign in front of the Richmond Costco saying they won't be open on Canada's Day...and no, its not beside the regular hours sign.

it was located between the entrance and exit..smack in the middle between the two gates....i saw it last week when I went there twice...both times the sign was there saying they'll be closed on Canada Day.

Again, do you expect that the corporate website allows each store's manager to have some sort of access to their own page on the website? If they did, then the page wouldn't be the static ones that they are now. Every store has different policies and holiday hours, so it would be pretty difficult to keep it updated. I believe somewhere on those pages, however, that it says "call your store to check holiday hours", does it not?

Anyways, don't always rely on technology. CALL!

Not sure why your laughing, there may be nine stat holidays in Canada, yet stores are almost always open on those holidays around here. Hence why I was surprised to find Costco wasn't, especially since they didn't announce it in any way, nor have any info anywhere near their entrance on that day.

Hagbard, the best thing to do is just have a conversation with a manager and ask them a)if they had a sign posted and b) where it usually is posted. Which location was this at? I used to work in Richmond and I know for a fact that, just like clockwork, a sign showed up at the building about a week or two before the holiday. At my current location in downtown Vancouver, we also had a sign posted at the front entrance. I can't speak for other stores though, which is why you should talk to a manager and, if they *didn't* post a sign, let them know that they *should* ;)

Not sure if this is mentioned (because i did not read the entire thread) but i went there earlier in the week and there was a sign at the store that said closed on Canada Day. Also any long-term member would know they are closed during holidays so the people who went either don't pay attention or are new members that don't know where to find information.

Just because you are allowed to open on holidays, you don't have to open if you don't want to. Its a private company and they can do what they want. I suspect Costco want to either to give their staff a holiday or do not want to pay double time for it's employees.

Just because of the upcoming BC Day / Simcoe Day / whatever the heck it's called day, I figured I would ressurect this thread.

My location (downtown Vancouver)has had a 'Closed BC Day' sign up for the last two weeks. Hopefully the O.P. has followed up with their location to ensure that there is proper signage for this holiday, based on their experience with the whole Canada Day thing they were initially complaining about.

There was some confusion during the last long weekend when Costco was closed in BC due to Canada day. Now, Aug. 6 is BC Day and is a holiday for most people. So, is Costco opened Aug. 6?
Someone said they is a sign in front of the Downtown Vancouver Costco but I did not see it last week. It must be a small sign for me to miss it.

The sign at the downtown Vancouver location is in between the two big entrance and exit doors, directly below the operating hours sign and is about 2' x 2' (maybe a couple of inches smaller) and the lettering is pretty big. And I believe the majority of locations are closed. At least the ones where there actually is some form of holiday on August 6.
