View Full Version : What do you do w/ clothing you don't wear any more?

Just wondering if other people buy more clothes than they actually need (i.e., never really get worn out).

What do you do with your extra clothes? Do you donate, re-sell or throw out?

If you re-sell, how do you do it (e.g., on-line, garage sale, etc.)?

If you donate, do you have a specific charity (e.g., goodwill, shelter, etc.)?

Lastly, how often do you clear out your closets?

Thanks!

It'll come back in style in 10 years so keep it

Donating is what I have always done, it clears out closet space and makes me feel better at the same time. :)

I offer my clothes to my sister. And if she doesn't want them, I donate them to the Canadian Diabetes Association. They even pick the clothing up from your home.

I usually clear out my closest twice a year, just before spring and fall.

Donate it.

I donate them to the local mission because I know that %100 of the value my donation goes to this charity as they operate their own retail outlet (which is staffed by volunteers). I no longer give my donations to charities in partnership with Savers or Value Village.

You do know that the "Canadian Diabetes Association" is just Value Village right? Yup, only a portion of the proceeds of the sale of clothing by VV goes to CDA - not all of the proceeds. The individual who owns VV is an ultra-conservative who lives in the US.

I usually donate all of my clothing to a store here which is operated by a church, but at least they are open about it.

Wear them as "work" clothes that can get dirty. For cutting the lawn, working in the garden or garage, etc.

If they can fit my mom or my sister, I give it to them. Otherwise, our whole family donates a lot of stuff to Value Village.

We've given away alot of household appliances/accessories and shop there as well. It's fun to see our own stuff being resold!

Usually I just leave it there, but my mom give it to my younger cousins which is fine by me.

Use as rags or for painting stuff, chores.

What is actually in ok condition I might give to a friend, but by the time I am usually done with an item it is crap.

or I take my old clothing apart and use the fabrics for crafts ect....

I had some pants that were so old they were way too short for me, but still fit. I really liked them, so I had the dry cleaner turn then into shorts/dressy shorts and they look really nice!

As other people said I don't give stuff to value village or the diabetes foundation. I also find the diabetes foundation spends too much on administrative stuff...but that is not the point of this post...

1) Where the clothes are name brands and I only wore the clothes 1x or 2x at most, I have sold them on-line for 30 - 40% of the original price. (I shouldn't have bought that much clothes and convinced myself I was renting them. :cheesygri )

2) I have cut jogging pants into shorts.

3) I donated clothes to drop-boxes by the supermarket parking lots. Can't remember the name of the charity. I do this about 1x or 2x a year.

4) I've given clothes for free on craigslist (e.g., old abercrombie shirt with a small coffee stain).

5) Some of my old sweatshirts are used as a bed by my cats. I use T-shirts to clean or dust. Old jeans to patch up other clothes, etc.

I'm trying not to buy as much clothes this year. I read an article about how everything that is made has an envrionmental cost. It's been really tough to change old habits.

That's what I do too. Offer my clothes and shoes to friends/fam. If no one wants them it goes to the Canadian Diabetes Association. They have a bin in the moving room of my condo.

Mine and the kids clothes go to a local women's shelter. Let's face it if a woman has to leave home in a hurry, she's gonna grab what she can and could use them to start over.

I never donate to VV or the trucks that come around, I've overheard the drivers pick thru what they think is selleable and do just that, sell it.

I am also fedup with Freecyle. I have donated bags of clothes to women claiming to desparatly need them just to see them on Virtual Garage Sales such as TodaysParent.com!!!

Or they sell stuff to Value Village.
I don't shop at VV for that reason, and $20 for "used" jeans is way too much when I can get really nice new brand name jeans for $8 :) in the store near me...

I also see families sometimes pick through these boxes in my neighborhood.
One box is beside the mall near a bus stop and last week this family and kids had somehow gotten to the stuff that was inside and was picking through it.
I guess they really needed items or something- the neighborhood around me is quite poor, so hopefully the people were taking the items for themselves and not to resell...

Happens all the time, the parents get their smallest kid to crawl in and push the bags out from inside.

Dont drop them in just any bin that says "Donate your clothes".
Most of them are scams and sell them back out.
I've once seen a bin where it was full and no one came to pick them up for over a month. There were bags of clothes outside the bin all torn up by scavengers and the weather just beating on it.

I personally drop them off at Salvation Army at the in-person drop off centres where some is there to receive them.

I figured these people need the clothing the most!

I walk across the hallway to my brother's room when he's not in there and I throw them on his bed...

I usually see them lying on the floor in the hallway or in my room the next day. So then I eat them.

well!! I believe charity is what everyone dose.... mostly... also keeping clothes for few years and then again start wearing them... so it becomes fashion... ;)... there are number of places where u can sell your clothes... get rid of them and at the same time earn something...

Donate it or throw it in a bin and wear it at home or sleeping, I always end up running out of closet space.

Out there somewhere, there's a bum wearing a pair of limited edition Evisu x Oki-Ni's :D
