I am putting together a system for someone and was wondering everyone's take on direct x10 video cards to 9. My buyer has allocated 300 max to video cards or at least that is how it works out what is better ?

7800 GTX in SLI
8600 GT in SLI .

Thanks to all who have the video card knowledge that I lack lol.

A single video card. SLI is never cost-effective, and it's only real use is to get decent framerates at huge resolutions used with 30 inch screens.

8800 GTS 320M will outperform both of those.

Or save him a bit of money and go for an X1950 XT, which is slightly cheaper.

If he doesn't plan to use Vista for a while, may as well go for the X1950.

Addtionally, may want to review this: Tom's Hardware best Gaming video cards for the money.. june edition

Forgot to add, even assuming he does use Vista, there is only one game out that actually uses DX10, and that's only with a patch. Company of Heroes got upgraded to DX10 with the latest patch, and that was only happened about 2 weeks ago.

Also, looking at the budget.. Looks like 8800 GTS is out of your budget. So choice would come down to 8600 GTS or an X1950 XT 256MB. Both will outperform the SLI solutions with less power, noise and heat.

The X1950 XT outperforms the 8600 GTS by a clear margin.

the choice is yours...
