I wonder if we should start a sub-forum called Mild Deals...

Woohoo! I got my order for a blackbook in! The price is ALMOST as good as the Compusmart deal that was cancelled, and also can also be used with the $100 rebate on a canon printer! So I got a black macbook for $1190, plus a $50 printer (+extra tax). The educational price of a blackbook new is $1550. The only difference is that the new one has 160 GB of hard drive space instead of 120GB, and a 2.16 Ghz processor instead of 2 Ghz. Well worth the $360 savings IMHO. True, the new one would also entitle me to a $225 rebate on an ipod (educational offer), but I already have more ipods than I need, and these savings are better. I'm very happy:)
While this is listed as a refurb machine, not only does it come with the full apple warranty (and would be refurbed by APPLE, with apple parts), but I strongly suspect that these are just leftover units of an older model. Apple doesn't have an online clearance section in their Canadian store ;).
And while I'm COMPARING this to the educational deals I could get, this deal is available to everyone! The black macbooks are now OOS, but Apple replenishes stock every few days:). Check in the mornings. HUGE thanks to mikeinmontreal, who alerted me to this this morning:).

1.83G macbook must be an older model.

Isn't this the same one Staples is selling for $999 new? Or is it the black that's exciting?

All of these macbooks we've been talking about are the older models. Therein lies the deal. The last revisions to the macbooks (not macbook pros) was a relatively small speed/drive/RAM bump, so getting the newly discontinued ones at a discount is a deal. I wasn't questioning whether it was an older model, I was questioning whether it's really "refurbished".

No.
Well, yes, the black is exciting, but the one staples is selling at $999 is the low end of the last macbook line (used to be $1249). The black macbook is the high end of the line (used to be $1649). Differences, besides color, are a faster processor, bigger hard drive, more RAM, and a DVD burner. It isn't JUST the color, although I think the black's sexy too ;).

The Staples flyer I saw lists a 1.83/512/60 for $999. It's $1004 online here:
http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku.asp?CatIds=85%2C86%2C87,4519&webid=670997&affixedcode=WW
(assuming any are available either way). Same specs as the refurb for $40 more new.

Your link shows $999 for me:). That's the base price for these units anywhere that has them. Note that with staples, you can phone in your order and apply all the coupons in the staples coupons thread for another $90 off;).
(I still doubt whether the refurb is really refurb'd, and I never hesitate to buy refurbs from Apple anyway. Staples is the better deal with coupons on this computer though. :))

Might be a silly question, but you can't use those Staples coupons in-store, can you? Reason being I want to use my Debit card rather than my Credit card.

i have recently received my refurb macbook pro from apple, got it for $1499. The first thing i checked when i got it if there were any scratches or dings, to my surprise there were none to be found. The only slight defect i found is that the eject button on the keyboard is not flush with the other keys, other than that i would say this laptop is brand new. It took about 2 weeks to arrive from the order date.
