It appears this C521 uses a propreitary powersupply ... Also, I suspect all expansion cards *might* have to be low-profile format ...

I believe the PCI-E slot will only accept half-height PCI-E cards... not enough space in the slim form factor for a full one.

Basically the same as that other 389$ deal some time ago, except this one has 1GB ram and smaller size. Nice deal.

Make it 2GB with the cheap DDR2 ram available elsewhere!

Dumb question,

How does an AMD Athlon compare to, say, a P4? Is it like the old Celeron computers that were a little bit slow? Or is it fairly quick?

100% confirmed - ALL expansion cards must be HALF-HEIGHT (AKA. low-profile) cards.

Best half-height video card I've found is the X1650 Pro or 7600GS.

Very HOT, frankly one of the hottest desktop deals I've ever seen for a non-refurb.

XP instead of Vista makes it that much hotter IMHO. I love the small form factor of the C521 even though it limits your video card choices.

Would be on this in a second if I was thinking about a new PC.

I much prefer HP's 3020n micro-desktop unit. About half the size of the Dell C521 but still offers PCI & PCIe16 low profile slots. I'm watching for deals on that one... Staples has one where you get the package with printer & 22" LCD for $900 which is pretty good, but not awesome by any stretch. And it's a Vista machine. :(

You SHOULD be able to get the E521 for almost the same price as the C521. Then your expansion is standard cards.

Add 2GB to the existing one. 3GB total, and none is wasted, like the ~700MB that's wasted when you have 4GB.

Not just fairly quick! This AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core 3600+ is way faster (better) than the Pentium 4 and uses much less power.
But to buy this compact computer, you have to be sure you won't need an add-on card later likes a better sound card or graphic card since the normal cards won't fit and the low profile cards are rare, expensive and limited.

Devastates the Celeron, much faster than a comparably-priced P4, not as quick as a Core 2 Duo.

How does the 3600 compare with the 3800 or 4200?

Same cache, just different clockspeeds; 3600 = 1.9GHz, 3800 = 2.0GHz, 4200 = 2.2GHz

Haven't followed the new dual cores, can anyone tell me if these are 65NM or 90NM? I'd have to imagine if they are the 65NM they'd be better suited for a little ramping up (OC'ing).

Could be either, but I think the Brisbane (65nm) 3600+ are more common. However, there's no way you'll be able to overclock this Dell system in the BIOS, but you might be able to do it using some software FSB speed modifier. If you're intrested in overclocking at all, I would not recommend this system.

Does anyone know how many slot for memory in this machine? I wonder if there are 4 so the 2x512MB won't be wasted.

Should take at least 4, as you can option it that way when you're buying it.

It shows $509 for me...?

Try again? It is $509 - $110 = $399 for me.

the BIOS in almost ALL name-brand systems has many settings removed to prevent you from messing with CPU and memory speeds and voltages, etc.
This can be a good thing in many cases, as you can make your machine very unstable if you don't know *exactly* what you're doing.

Bit more info:

- Total of 4 RAM slots --> couldn't get sales guy to budge and swap 2x512MB sticks for one 1GB stick though...

- This case does NOT permit addition of a 2nd HDD or optical drive... one each only (this is the deal breaker for me)

Still a good deal though!

Ahh! I missed that on this one's original configuration. NORMALLY they ship with a pair of 512's... it's unusual to see a single 1GB in there.
WHOOPS! I misread that. Keep the pair of 512's. Get a pair of 1GB's to go with it and you have 3GB - a very nice amount of RAM to have these days.

XP home vs. Pro.... this deal is pretty good with the free shipping and all, but I'd still consider building your own this time if you already own the OS.

The low-profile cards are a huge limitation for many people who want more than just a basic workstation.

Anyone?

Gimme' a sec! Sheesh! :D

You could search for "low profile" video cards, but those are very limited and quite expensive.

What you CAN do to expand your options is to go through the list on a place with pictures (like Tiger Direct) and watch for the cards that are only about half as high as their full-sized mounting bracket. Those brackets just unscrew and you can stick it in as it is, make your own bracket, or see if a low-profile bracket is included or available.

Only have 2 internal SATA connector, and both used (DVD, HD)

So no, tough and probably not worth it to add a second HD. Cheaper to REPLACE the existing SATA drive with something bigger down the line

I suppose one can add a 2nd HD by :

1. Moving the DVD drive to external
2. Mount the 2nd HD with 3.5-to-5.25 brackets.

Of course, you can always add a 2nd external HD instead ... Slower but much easier ...

Problem with Dell computers are the compromises you have to make. But they're cheap and if you're happy with the configuration you get and can live with it for the life of the computer, than its worthwhile.

Haha, good luck! I really hope it works because this is a sweet deal, but I will suggest you look at the card you bought rather than relying on Dell sales to tell you what 3rd-party hardware will work.

This is the card you have (I think): http://shop.ati.com/product.asp?sku=3130802
This is a low-profile card: http://www.hardwarezone.com/img/data/articles/2004/1238/powercolor_low-profile.jpg

If you look at the picture, you can make a good size comparison based on the size of the DVI port(s) on the back of the card. Now, Dell does specify on the documents that have been posted here (I think by willy) that it supports low profile cards, so I'm 99% sure that your X800 is not going to fit into this Dell. Sorry for the bad news, hope you can enjoy it anyway, but don't be disappointed if the X800 won't fit, OR get it in writing (email) or record the Dell rep saying that the X800 will fit, as a backup measure :)

EDIT link from willy: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dimC521/en/SM_EN/parts.htm

Thanks Vivienm.

For the sake of discussion, lets say that both systems ran equally cool, and electricity was not a factor, what would be the better buy ?

Hmm... I'd probably go for the Compaq, because it's a lot more expandable. (3 PCI slots of regular size, some internal drive bays, etc.)

But unless you REALLY need a spaceheater, the 820 is just a foolish buy right now. The 8xx series of Pentium Ds is the hottest, most power guzzling lineup of x86 processors ever...

Honestly, it depends what you're looking for. If you need a solid low-end desktop box for your mom/gf/whatever, then I'd go for the Dell. Low power, low noise, the 6150 can run Vista/Aero Glass if you want to upgrade later, smaller, etc. If you're planning to stick them in a corner and run Windows Home Server, I'd get neither... :)

How does this deal compare to the Compaq Presario Intel Pentium D 820 Dual Core 2.8GHz Computer (SR2050NX) that is presently on sale a FS for $399 (web only) ?

I know the FS one is refurbished, and the Dell is not, but overall is one a better deal than the other ?

The Dell deal is better by a wide margin. Compaq is a lousy brand, it's a refurb, and the CPU is poorer than the 3600+

This deal is not as appealing as the E521 at the same timeline given the massive drop in prices of DDR2 rams and AMD cpus.

It's not bad of a system if you're into SFF (sort of) and don't need too much performance nor connectivity like IDE, Firewire, extra SATA, onboard DVI/TV/digital audio etc.

If you're thinking about adding a bunch of stuff and taking it apart or moving to a different case and so on...I'd say why bother...you are much better off building your own from scratch.

Except the Compaq has expansion potential, if you wanted to use it as a file server or something... (but then, of course, who wants to spend the electricity feeding an 820 for a home server?)

It may not be the E521 deal a while ago but I missed it so I'll get this one instead (it's smaller too). Hope they don't put the E521 on sale in the next few days or even weeks...

Also, for someone like me who likes to get a new computer every year or so, upgrading possibilities does not even weight in the balance.

I'll get these 2 X 1GB RAM for $68.88 at DirectCanada too:

Dell uses their own propietary motherboards, made by Foxconn usually, they are reliable but if you're looking for advanced settings like overclocking look elsewhere, they don't have it, basic and reliable is the theme.

Not for the graphics card options, they are certainly not worth the extra cash. Those cards are ultra low end and not much better than onboard video.

Now about the memory upgrade: The cheapest you can find 1GB of memory is like $29.99 and thats before tax and the time to pull out your system and install the stuff. I'd say for $50 it's not a bad idea. But remember, this system comes with XP Home and 2GBs of ram is plenty for XP. I think 1GB is just fine for the non-gamer, photoshop, CAD user.

This is bad advice. Finding a low-profile video card is going to be difficult, and the Radeon X1300Pro is about 5-6x faster than the onboard "free" video. It's a bit pricey at $120, but would save you a LOT of hassle trying to find the right card to fit. The X1300Pro isn't too bad of a video card either. I use mine and get good framerates provided the detail or resolution isn't too high.

Well to be honest your reply makes sense b/c you own the x1300 card. I will agree the X1300pro is a fair bit better than onboard video but at $120 asking price? Thats nearly 30% of the asking price for the entire system.
Given the ridiculous price of that upgrade, I would not recommend the X1300 pro. Also, considering the size of the case just stick with onboard graphics and use another machine for gaming and graphic intense applications.

You will experience an increase in performance, but it won't be double. Based on what you use your computer for, you're best off just buying another 1gb RAM and you should be fine.

It might feel a bit peppier... snappier response. The things you're using your Celeron for aren't especially demanding. There are other tasks though where this Dell machine would be likely FIVE TIMES faster than the Celeron - such as graphics-intensive programs like video editing and games. I'm betting even the 3D graphics built-in to the Dell are also better than what you're using now.

Especially if you want the OS, this would be a good upgrade choice for you.

from the parts link above:

Your computer supports a combination of these devices:

There is no bracket or slot specificaly designed for a 2nd hdd in this small box but you can jam one in no problem.

Quite a sensible opinion. The power supply in this Dell wouldn't handle a super-high-end card anyways.

The metal bracket is a full height one. You could remove that, it should just unscrew, and replace witha half height bracket - available at most comp. stores. You may have to mod the bracket if they only have video card ones...

Less hassle - get a usb wireless antenna...

Thanks for your post! I emailed DELL last night and they confirmed this morning that my card will not fit, contrary to what they said yesterday... they admit is there fault but did not provide a solution... :| the rep said she is trying to cancel the order but can't not do it in the system.

I suggested adding the X1300 Pro 256 MB for additional $60 (vs. reg. $120). Not sure if they will do it... still waiting...

The problem is... a lot of enthusiasts might want a computer designed for small spaces to be used as an HTPC or home server or something like that. Why deal with the bulk/ugliness/etc of a full ATX case for those purposes?

Unfortunately, this system is WAY too compromised to be useful for those purposes...

$60 for the X1300 is reasonable for the card, although not very good performance-per-dollar, especially compared with the deal you got on your X800. $120 is pricey & it makes it cheaper to build a new PC & reuse your X800.

If you really need a powerful discreet GPU, the X1300 isn't going to cut it - your current video card is over twice as fast as the X1300, and if that's the case it might be worth passing on this deal altogether. If you can live with the $60 X1300 or the onboard graphics, it's still a good deal.

Yeah, the X1300 for $60 is a good price, no doubt there, but the question is if you were to spend $460 and use the X800 you've already got, could you build this system (or better) for a similar price? hmm... very well said... you are right... I didn't think of it that way. I am not sure if whether I can build a better system... I suspect I can. I am looking for the form factor, hence this one catches my eyes.

I guess we will see if Dell can do it for me. If not, what are some other cheap half-height card you can recommend for this system? I know someone on this thread has already suggested a $170 card. That is too pricey for me... do you have any recommendations? Thanks again for your help and your opinion and knowledge is highly valued!

I'm thinking of picking up one of these for a HTPC. My tv will support 1080p over vga, does anyone know if this thing will output 1920X1080 through VGA?

From my experience with my friend's computer with similar specs, the onboard NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE won't cut it for HD video at 1080p. I ended up got a 8500GT for him.

The 7300GS is a decent price, but you have to add shipping. $74
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3053798&CatId=1558

Same for this X1550 @ $107 - 20 = $87
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3002825&CatId=1558

If you can politely convince Dell to reduce the cost of the X1300Pro upgrade, just go with that. Far easier! Still... if you need more graphics horsepower, look for a deal on the E521...

Thanks Bluemax... that is what I am trying to do... politely convince them to give me the X1300 Pro 256MB for $60 (I really think the error is on their part given I asked specifically about that and I got a firm answer twice in the conversation)

If not, which card in your suggestion do you think is better? nvda vs. ati in your list? Thanks again!

Given the two cards in my quote, the 7300GS is only equal to the X1300 (maybe the pro.) The X1550 is a fair bit more power.... I'd go that route. (I checked that X1550 to make sure it was 128-bit and not a castrated 64-bit version. It's 128bit.) It's more power for less money than Dell's $120 X1300pro.

Thanks - so may I will ask Dell to give me a discount on the existing deal and use the savings to buy the card you suggested! Thanks again for your advice!

One more thing, do you know if X1550 will meet the dell power requirement, and I would just like to confirm again that this is a low, profile card... Would you be able to let me know?

The x1550 is the exact same card as the x1300.

Here's more info about the x1550 http://news.softpedia.com/news/X1300-Will-Be-Known-as-X1550-40422.shtml

Also, this particular card http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3002825&CatId=1558 uses GDDR memory while most x1300/x1550 cards use GDDR2 memory.

Right now, assuming that dell's Ati x1300 pro isn't crippled in any way, it is the best graphical solution of the bunch for this computer.

I just spoke with Dell customer care - they said return it and I will get a 60 on the next system purchase! WTF!

or

I can get the X1300 Pro 256 MB and ship separately for $75

What do you think guys? Which deal should I get?

I have a sinking feeling on this one, but I'd get a 60 on next system purchase as long as it can be applied to ALL DEALS including limited quantity and online only deals.

Thanks for your comments - that's helpful (I'm serious)

Dell agreed to rebuild my order + X1300 Pro 256mb but only adding $60. My final bill including taxes is $514. Not to bad?? comments?

I would take the lower price on the video card NOW while you need it. $60 vs. $45 isn't that huge.

Yup. The 6150 should get about 3.0 in WEI. But... buying a box with XP seems silly once you add up the cost of a Vista upgrade?

I have a friend who works at MS in Redmond that gave me a copy of Vista Ultimate - I think he paid $40 USD for it or something...

Thanks for the confirmation.

I was on the fence on this deal.

I decided to pass as it was a little more then I wanted to spend and I did not like the limitations on the unit.

Thanks for posting the deal because I was very interested and almost bought one.

Cbit had some nice deals on. Sale ends today but they always have sales on, and the stuff may still be the same price.

I am not saying this is the cheapest in the country or from online, but I was happy with what I got and liked the advice I got.

If you have alot of components to re use upgrade packages are a good price right now. So those on the fence may want to pay a visit and consider their options.

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ X2 AM2 97.95
Foxcom 6100NDMA-R2H 99.95
Kingston DDR2-667 1 GIG 39.95
Fan Free - Retail CPU
+ Taxes

This supports all older things but also also additions for new, so it was a good fit for me.

The foxconn mobo is more like $70, for $100 there are some newer and more feature rich AM2 mobos that gives DVI/HDMI/firewire etc.

I wasn't bragging about what I got, and also said in my post you may be able to get it cheaper. (NCIX is $85 + shipping) The point was to inform people that an upgrade route may be a good option based on their situation. In Winnipeg I would be surprised if those prices could be beat at local stores. I have shopped there for years and they changed the computer market in Winnipeg for the better when they came in (Decent prices etc...) so i like to support them. So I think you get a solid deal when you go there. Maybe not the best, but close enough. Also they assemble the board, cpu, fan, and ram and start it up to show you what you're getting and that it works ... or appears to.

I always like what I see at Tiger Direct, then shipping is ridiculous. Also most their CPU's don't come with fans. Online TD ... the thing that always kills deals for me is shipping. They call it brown for a reason

I didn't want any of those other features listed because I won't use them. What I liked about this board was it is balance between supporting old, and allowing for new. For instance when I saw the dell was missing the printer port that was a big deal for me. My laser is only a few years old, but is not usb. You can get cables to convert, but I found they sometimes are inconsistent.

Sorry...I didn't mean to put down your mobo, I use a similar one by ASRock and nothing out there has less feature than the ASRock except for an OEM board like HPs or Dells :~)
I too like to shop local whenever possible, though not always cheapest. TD is local, even without the shipping for me, I don't find it particularly appealing to shop there, though the place is packed every time I am there.
