the kid is being "home-schooled" nothing surprising here

most kids that go through that don't know how to really interact with other people

Being home-schooled is not necessarily the culprit. I know a few friends who home-school their kids up to the point they reached high-school. Their kids grew up fine without any social or communication problems at all.

The problem here is the force-feeding non-sense from the parents that they think the Spelling Bee is the only goal of life. And that they seem to have taken everything away from the kid's life. That's just sad

That's just sadThey are lucky they did that till high school...In the states I have heard most do have been home-schooled until college. Then while in college they have a terrible time interacting with people and gettign friends.

Yea i agree the parents are to blame as well but since he is being home-schooled he probably isn't getting much interaction with other people besides his parents

They were well aware of that so right from the get go, they said the kids will be home-schooled until the beginning of high school before the kids lose all the interactions and the necessary skills with the outside world. Mind you though, they also sent their kids to the music lessons among other things that many children do so that helped too. But anyway, I still say Spelling Bee is one sad competition

Homeschooling is one of those things that can work very well or fail horrendously.

I personally know one guy - he's about 19 now. He's taking a year off of school because he had finished two years of university by age 18. He is a walking, talking genius. Socially, he is as normal as they come. He has been homeschooled his whole life. His brothers and sister are all homeschooled and are quite smart too. All of them are well adjusted and interact very well with others. His parents are both very smart people.

Then there's the other side. I know of several kids/young adults who are/were homeschooled. Some of them are the most socially inept people I have ever met. They make the kid in this video look like a public speaker. Their mothers, typically the ones providing the education, are mostly uneducated people who strike you as not exactly being the cream of the intellectual crop. The kids rarely leave the house and don't really have friends outside of their brothers and sisters.

I'm not completely against homeschooling, but seeing some of the latter cases sure does strike some fear when thinking of the larger scale. A lot of these kids may have learning disabilities or other problems and they may never be diagnosed because the kids are never in a setting where anyone will notice.

In the words of Mr Gump, that's all I've got to say about that.

Jun 6th, 2007, 02:21 PM
That was painful to watch, but I think he has some sort of mental disorder. I don't think home-schooling is to blame for that.

I was surprised to see that no one else has commented on the idea that the boy may have some sort of autistic spectrum disorder? Something seems to be 'off' with him, [from what is neurotypical] but it may not be homeschooling related as much as it just might be 'who he is.' Mind you, it is up to his parents to see to it that they can help him with social skills throughout his homeschooling years, so homeschooling may not be to his benefit, in particular. Good for him for winning, but I sure hope the parents are not pushing him into it. I didn't watch the whole video, only the first half.

It was painfully awkward for all involved. :|

Yep.. You read my mind. For the record, I don't believe ASD to be a bad thing - just a different way of thinking. :)
