View Full Version : Changing number listing to unlisted, almost 3 months and counting for 411.ca to update

Has anyone made their number unlisted recently in Toronto? I would like to keep the number, just want it to be unlisted. The reason I'm asking is because they have "A $55 charge may be applicable." on the form online. $2 a month is reasonable (somewhat), but $55 to push a couple of buttons? Any experiences with how to avoid that fee, other than threaten to cancel?

Do they always charge that $55 fee or is that when you change the number?

Also, any experiences with how long it takes to remove the name from 411.ca?

Any other websites list information to general public they obtained through Bell that I need to worry about? (I don't know if that is being done, so just checking)

Their office is currently closed, I will call them in the morning.

Thanks.

We went unlisted when we went VOIP and it was a part of the change to cogeco. That being said, it did not remove us from ANY online phonebooks, and we received about 20 telemarketing calls a day!!!

We ended up having to change our number and totally start from scratch!! It was a nuisance, but now my phone only rings when I want it to..lol.

We also have it blocked going out.

Your other culprit is Sears!! If you have ever purchased anything from them, they will sell their lists and bang you are back where you started from!

Did they mention which other online phonebooks?
Just called, there is no $55 charge, it's $2 a month. It takes 4 business days to be removed from 411.ca and the next phonebook comes out in March.
Going unlisted will not eliminate all unwanted phonecalls as some of the companies generate the numbers to call randomly. Well, you can hope they would put your name on the do not call list, but different companies have different policies on how long your number stays on that list (no one thought it was permanent, right?), and some will not put you on that list/don't have one.

Sears raped me on these telemarketing calls. They called around 60 times in a month until I picked up, told the girl to cancel my Sears card and shove it. They haven't called me since.

I recently change to an unlisted number, and Rogers charges $2 a month (no one time $55 fee). I'd rather pay the $55 one time, instead of $2 a month. (If you intend on keeping your number unlisted permanently)

The $55.00 charge is generally to recieve a new phone number. $2.00 per month sounds about right for most phone providers for an unlisted number.

In regards to a unlisted number preventing telemarketing calls - that won't solve your problem. It simply removes your information from the 411 directory, and the phone book. If a company has your number - it doesn't matter what you do as you are already in their database. YOU have to take the intiative to have them remove your number.

Even with a new phone number do keep in mind the number is recycled from another person so if they had their number listed with companies it's still possible you will recieve calls. Nor is it the phone companies problem if you get these calls.

Just in case anyone thinks the number will be removed from 411.ca - think again:lol:
Bell only controls canada411 but not 411.ca. My number is still on 411.ca after almost three month. 411.ca updates the info every 3-4 month with the information the get from Bell.

Apparently, 411.ca gets their info from whitepages.com and 411.ca "cannot delete, add or edit that information". WTF is that? I guess any Joe Blow can publish your information online and than claim they can not delete. I thought we did have privacy laws in Canada. Maybe "did" is the keyword :D
