Hey,

Did you guys get a phone call from the Toronto Police? They asked me to make a small donation for something happening this month (fund-raising). I got really nervous and I said sorry i am not going to donate any $.

Just wondering if the Toronto Police actually does these kind of services to raise money? Or did you receive a similar call.

Thanks

It could very well have been a marketing company regarding the Police Retirees Fund. They sell Circus Tickets for Garden Bros. and the proceeds are donated to them. It is legit :D

I think we received one of those calls a while back when I was in Kingston. Not here in Toronto though since we're unlisted so they're probably going through the phone book.

I have received these calls numerous times.

My mom was so silly that she got suckered into making a small donation. No idea if they are legit but they have never stopped calling since.

Not only that, but we now have many, many telemarketers calling us. Now my mom regrets ever making the donation.

So beware !!!

How did you know it was the Toronto Police?
Once the Toronto Police called my house to tell me to go to the football game they were playing(Police).
But not for donations.

Just to be sure, you'd better flush your stash.

Municipalities do this from time to time, it's usually a police officer donating their time to help raise funds for a program intended to reduce crime (teen center, recreation camp, etc.)

I thought they couldn't canvass for donations?

That said, thanks for your money.

ask for their officer number (what ever its called) just to make sure they are not some scam artists.

I've been called by the Toronto Police Association for a donation but refused. They haven't called back since (~2 years ago).

It's not actual cops calling around for donations, it's some third party agency that has the rights to that specific contract.

^^

I'm surprised no one has pulled out the "Don't cops have better things to be doing??" ;)

They call me quite often. And I always tell them I'll donate if they cancel my parking ticket.

I wouldn't call it "legit." I worked for this company in highschool, and the company (RAP Marketing) had some VERY questionable business practices.

They called me at 6AM a few days ago.
It was a strange call, I was still half asleep.
But the phone rang with a special ringer, not the standard.
Then when I asked who it was, they simply said "the police".
They they asked me if everything was alright, and confirmed my address and took my name.
It was a very strange call. It sounds like someone called them from our house and they were returning the call but...its 6AM.....made no sense.

never say yes, my bro was stupid enough to have said yes, and they sent us like at least 10 letters telling us that we said we are commited to it, so we have to donate.... i was like wth!

RAP is no longer used. GBC and Garden Bros now uses another company that has better established marketing practices.

It is legit, as the proceeds go to the Police Retirees Fund and they in turn do a lot of charitable work in our communities.

That being said, you should never be coerced into making the purchase. A no thank you should suffice and you can request to be removed from the call list (they have to conform to that request)

The third party agency / call center will never say they are the police either, but rather word it differently such as "My name is ________ and I'm calling on behalf of the Toronto Metropolitan Police force". Behalf is the keyword here, but you'll be surprised how many people actually think it is the police calling them. I've seen this happen too with telemarketing companies with bank contracts and call people - everyone thinks it's actually the bank calling them.

They piss me off.
We've got teens in this house, and when someone calls my house and says ' hi this is police officer smith, bla bla bla' i hear nothing past his name. i'm already freaking out.

the kids are out, and a cop calls my house introducing himself.
then the bastards annouce they want money.
for those three seconds that i am wondering how bad an accident the kids have been in or how badly they are hurt, i am swallowing my stomach.
i tell them every single time they scared the **** out of me and they're ignorant not to tell my why they are calling, before they announce they're a cop.
then i tell tell them to shove it. they've already stressed me out, and they can't have any of my friggin money until they find a better way to ask for it. lol
