I have an unlocked GSM tri-band phone that I currently use under rogers. I am planning on going to Europe soon, and was wondering what my options were for the phone. Since it is unlocked, can I not buy a SIM card from a local provider in Italy and use it? Thus saving me from roaming under rogers and LD.
My only problem is how would I know what my number is? Would I get a new number with the SIM card I bought there?
Thanks.

Yes
I'm no luddite but even I was impressed with "global roaming" when I turned on my unlocked Rogers RAZR V3i in the area just past Passport Control @ Heathrow airport. Was able to get onto Orange right away and call my family so they were waiting for me at the exit. Neat-o.
