How can you tell fake from real??? LV, Lacoste, Ralph Lauren and so on

Wide open question, but it simply comes to you when you have seen, touched, enjoyed the real deal.
The quality of materials used in counterfit designer items is mediocre at best. For example all those fake Chanel and LV purses floating about, the leather (if leather was even used) is nowhere close to the quality of what is really used.
I grit my teeth everytime I see one.
For more info on leather goods, www.mypoupette.com is one of the best resources on the net. Another great resource is http://forum.purseblog.com/, they will be honest with you because they believe in the real thing! Both MyPoupette and http://www.caroldiva.com/ will for a small fee authenticate purchases online, which will give you some piece of mind when making purchases online etc.

For RL polos, the only thing i noticed between fake and real big pony polos is where they are made, how the tag at the colour is attached, where the tags are attached and what not. Its really small things that show you differences.
Also for Lacoste, I can't stress this enough. On the collar tag it should only have one tag and that one and only tag should read lacoste with the gator. The should be no second tag showing and saying designed in france, made in peru. Also another noticeable feature on lacoste polos is the position of the gator. If it sits to low it is fake. Finally the wash tag on the inside of the polo should have green stitching and say at the end of it Devanlay, not that stupid *Devanlay*crap. Check neimanmarcus.com and see how lacoste polo collar tags are supposed to be. I also used amazon.com to look at the ralph lauren big pony polos.

If you attempt to pop the collar and it doesn't stay up, then the shirt is 100% fake
edit: you can only buy fake apparel in Vancouver anyway, since it's all Asians. Don't even get me started about the lower-east side

If you paid $2200 on a hand bag you probably got a real one. But to be sure I'd ask people if they think its real. ;)
Oh and those of you that don't know their monogram stuff is not leather.

Isn't the momogram LV bags printed Canvas?
I used to think they were leather, but then I haven't tried touching anyone's bag or seen them up close..just pics online.
I know you can get printed leather bags as I have one. It is not printed with a logo though, it has a print of a Monet painting on it and is made by Icon bags, I think they sell them at Holts in Canada....or they used to.
I don't think paying $2,000 would mean your bag is real, there are tons of scams online thesedays....

For leather purses ie. LV or leather products in general -> SMELL it! New genuine leather products have a strong distinctive odour.
For clothing, look for the stitching - single stitching products are signs it is mass produced and not made to last.

Monogram LV bags are plastic... man made PVC. Don't be so surprised, even if it was leather its still way overpriced.
If you are stupid enough to pay $2000 at a non LV authorized dealer than yes you may have gotten a fake one.

You can get expensive but non-authentic apparel. Just because it has a high price tag doesn't mean it is legitimate. Stuff like this is for rich idiots to trip over

I have been buying locoste polos for well over 5 years now and I only buy them from the states from either Lacoste Boutiques or Macy's and I can tell you 100% that real lacoste polo's do have a second tag that says Designed in France Made in Peru and sometimes made in other places as well. I also know that some if not all real lacoste polo's purchased from Lacoste Boutiques in Asia don't have a 2nd tag on the collar. On fake lacoste polos the 2nd tag that details where it was designed and made is always more shiny and made from a slightly different material than the other tag that has just the gator on it. Never buy a locoste polo for less that $75USD cause if you buy one for about $50CDN chances are its a fake. Best bet is to get them from Licensed Boutiques(there is one at Vaughn Mills) or at Macys in the States.

I don't think price is always an issue I've seen $200 PVC bags and I've also paid $60 for a real snakeskin purse that was designer (and usually worth $600), so it really depends when and where you are buying your items from.
I also did get my bag from an authorized place in the US...just happened to be a very good clearance sale :)
And I find not all leather bags have that "leather smell", I have one new bag that smells very much like leather and another that doesn't at all.
Another hint with fake or crappy bags is the lining- so many bags at the mall have crappy nylon lineings and a good quality bag might be lined in suede or a nicer fabric.
Also good bags usually have solid metal hardware like made from brass or stainless steel, not nikel or almuminium.....

On real lacoste shirts the gator is lined up between the bottom button and the end of the neck hem or w/e u call it. That one is lined up right with the hem part.

I was a victim of this fake item business..until I read this great, helpful post!
I thought I can get lucky...and buy some real lacoste polo for a cheap price...but i failed...NEVER BUY FROM THESE DEALERS IF YOU USE EBAY!!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=290211895253&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=019
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=130204004317&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=003
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=140212628329&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=004
The above sellers sell 100% fake items..do not PURCHASE FROM THEM!! even if the position of the gator looks good and the gator looks real, but double they're all double tagged and the washing tag says *DEVANLAY* a REAL lacoste polo shouldn't say *DEVANLAY* should only say DEVANLAY.
Thanks to azn_dan, now I will remember this...cuz i purchased a $100+ of fake stuff aka a lesson...

really if u are determine it from pictures, then u must ask for close up of the materials, the cut is perfect on authentic items. if u are not sure, i usually post pictures on forums like HONEST, AUTHENTIC, and PURSE and let the pro's tell me.
