how does Belkin compare with APC?

the one at Staples is $148.99. Part of me wants to snarl that dell's price of $59 (reg. $89) is probably another error.

APC is the best name in UPS but Belkin should be as good compared to APC's low end models. The cheapest APC (those on sale during the Dell Days sale) do not have AVR, so I will go for the Belkin.

we just put in a home standby generator, and my APC went nuts when the power went out last week, and the generator kicked in (even though the generator has a governor) - I think the Belkin with the AVR would probably be the better one to have.

Better.. I have a 1100VA Belkin and 2 APC 550VA, and I much prefer the Belkin software wise.. For the rest, a battery is a Battery :p

Btw, don't forget you can get 40% off Belkin.com with coupon code "12345".. Sometime it come cheaper (I paid like $130 all included for my 1100VA 1 year ago)
You can actually have the 900VA for $79us with this code. (no, you don't pay any custom fees, but shipping can kill the deal since it's about $15 for 1 UPS)

Thanks OP - I got one at Staples, St. James St., Winnipeg.

As usual - doing the PM was as much fun as ever. Three clerks study the DELL printout then one declares "We will not do the price match as the UPS from Dell is NOT a Belkin". The other two clerks nod knowingly at this wise statement.

I ask for a pen & circle the word BELKIN on the Dell printout & ask the clerk to tell me what the circled word says. Silence ensues followed by more studying of the printout. I guess he was hoping if he stared at it long enough the price would change.

Many frantic (on their end) moments later I walk out with my BELKIN UPS for $56.50 - taxes included - and having paid with my AtHome Staples Gift Cards I netted it for $45.20.

I went to the Mississauga heartland store with the Dell printout. First, they said they don't price match with Dell. Then I checked the price match policy and found Dell should be a valid competitor. So I called again. And then the staff said the one they have has the "with broadband protection", which is different from Dell's $59 one (Dell has another one with protection for $129).
So I tried calling staple.ca for a price match. And the CR said its out of stock

Where did you see the free shipping? Theres a note on the order page that shipping charges are currently not available online - you will be notified by phone or email. Makes it hard to price match.

I don't see any free shipping banner but Dell currently doesn't charge shipping on most peripheral purchases. Just add the item to you cart and enter the postal code, the shipping estimate is 0.00.

How hard is it to click on "Add to Cart" then click on "Shipping" to know the final price ?

Good catch for your Staples store on that one!!

I did not realise there was a difference - but sure enough on the Belkin web site they show 2 750VA UPS's and the one I picked up from Staples IS the Broadband one with co-ax cable in & out ports.

I went to the Staples at Burnamthorpe and Grand Park in Mississauga yesterday. Yes, they do have a belkin 750 VA UPS, but the model number is slightly different. It's something like nnnBnnnnn vs nnnCnnnnn.

the gentleman there gave the PM to me anyway. now I am stuck with two UPSes. :|

I looked this up on the Belkin site - found the exact same model number, but the one on the Belkin site has 8 outlets, and the one Dell has only has 6 outlets

why the difference, if they have the exact same model numbers?

here's the one on the Belkin site (http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=171906#)

My PM at staples got denied. My personal lamest excuse ever encountered.

I brought the UPS unit to the cashier and asked for a PM. She looked at my printout from dell and thought it is ok but wanted to make sure, so she called the store manager. The store manager arrived and took a look at my printout and said:

- There is a 30$ online rebate, so I can only PM the regular price at $89.
- But it is an instant rebate, it is just like a normal product on sale.
- No, in order to be eligible to the rebate, you have to make the purchase online. So you cannot get the rebate in store.
- Ok......

Then cashier seemed to agree with me and told the manager that it is an instant rebate and not a mail-in-rebate. But the manager was still in his state of denial.
So I left....sigh.

Went to Staples (Laurentian Plaza in Kitchener), picked a box and went to the cashier asking for PM. The manager/supervisor said they had a similar situation before and the GM refused to PM. She also said Dell might be out of stock so I asked her to call them... she called and they had it in stock... so she accepted to PM 110%... paid ~$57 including tax.

This is a pure YMMV because it really isn't the same product. It's the one with Broadband so those who got it really got lucky. I tried today at 2 stores in the GTA and both managers noticed the difference in product after close checking.

Good luck to those... so get it from Dell... BUT now the issue of 6 or 8 plugs...

if she's doubtful about the "rebate issue", you should've just told her to go online, and add the item to cart... if there are any MIRs involved, the price displayed at checkout will obviously be before any MIRs, but if it's an IR, obviously the lower price is shown and they should be PMing that....

that's funny... rarely ever hear of ^those kinda lame excuses... "we don't PM IRs" ??

But the manager was still in his state of denial.

lol whenever FS/BB/stooples mgrs are confronted w/ PMs, don't they always seem to be like that? ;)

Exactly, it is really stupid. The manager said the issue is not mail-in or instant, but it is a "online" rebate, so it is not eligible "in-store". I tried to convince this is just a regular item on sale, but of course his state of denial blocked everything. And i did not want to argue too much (that's just my personality)

Put in the order yesterday, recieved it this morning. Lighting fast delivery!!

To answer oulet question, there are 8 oulets. 4 on surge protection only and 4 on back up power and surge protection.

For some reason when I plug it into my wall outlet, the "site wiring fault" light turns on...gonna have to investigate on that...

Try a different outlet on a different circuit. If the fault light is no longer on, you have a wiring problem in that circuit.

i kinda hate it when they start makin' up their own facts...

why take the benefit of the doubt when they can just call to confirm? -_-

well, they ARE supposed to do that as their policy specifies the item must be "exactly the same" as what they sell....

however, usually a simple check for UPC/MFR PN is sufficient

Denied PM at Stooples Downtown Bank St. Ottawa.

Reason was they got a memo from head office to not PM Dell Belkin products, that they have some special discount. I said is that what your policy says? He said the policy states we can limit quantities, and limit the right to PM.
I said so basically your PM policy is useless whenever you say it is? He said yes you can put it that way.

I wouldve made a big deal, but technically they arn't the same product. Although I may, and by may I mean will try South Keys Staples tomorrow.

I am tempted to buy this at $59. Since the battery terminals are easily accessible, perhaps a lead-acid battery can be connected to it for extended run-time? Would somebody be kind enough to drain the battery and connect an ammeter to the battery while it charges to measure the charging current?

The Belkin support site includes software for Linux. Has anybody tried it? How well does it work? NUT supports the F6C550-AVR, so I would assume that it also supports this?

Thank you!

They don't match online sales with retail sales.

They have a new policy which says:

hi all,

I have been searching for the solution on this issue on the web but cannot find anything, so I thought I try to ask the question here (sorry this may be a little bit off-topic):

Does anyone know if this UPS work with NUT (http://www.networkupstools.org) under linux? I like to know which driver should I use and perhaps a sample configuration file that works.

ps. I bought it a while ago when it was first on sale for $59 from Dell. Bought 4 total. They do have 8 outlets (instead of the 6 shown on the picture).

Thank you,

Thank you!

I wouldn't use a battery that isn't meant to be used
the moment power is restored, it'll start charging
and you shouldn't charge a lead-acid without the proper charger...

uh... read their policy again....

http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Static/static_pages.asp?pagename=help_policy_pricematch

at the bottom:

We reserve the right to limit quantities sold to an individual customer. The price guarantee does not apply to competitors advertising that states “limited quantities”, “while supplies last”, “clearance”, “close-outs” or “bankruptcies”. We do not match typographical errors in competitors’ advertisements. OEM, government and educational prices may be excluded. Prices do not include applicable taxes.
