So I have this Router:
http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=009517&cid=NT.489

and this Wireless Adapter:
http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=003485&cid=NT.541

and i have been getting some problems with router freezing up under some heavy download. After doing some research. I have concluded this is a bios (firmware) problem. Upon further investigations , I came across 3 different 3rd party firmware upgrades.

http://dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/ddwrt.php

http://www.polarcloud.com/tofu

http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato

Has anyone had any experience with these paticular bios's ? If so what do you recommend?

I also have this router, when I first got it, I instantly changed the firmware to tomato.
Works great, never had a single problem and download speeds have been blazingly fast.

Most recommend the dd-wrt firmware, it is quite stable and much better than the standard firmware.

Many people on RFD love that firmware.

I use HyperWRT + tofu (really old, must update at some point) and it works great. No freezes. I also run a script to drop connections that are half-open and don't respond after certain amount of wait time, I found this wasn't 100% necessary but did help to keep performance up when traffic is high.

Tofu is now Tomato. I suggest you use that, since it's one of the best, if not the best firmware available. For sure, it's the nicest looking of the bunch.

Any 3rd party firmware that will let you increase the max connections will resolve your issue. Personally, I've only used DD-WRT (have it on 3 different hardware) and love it. Its full featured (many that you won't normally use). I believe Tomato has way less features (correct me if I'm wrong)....not that it matters if you don't plan to use those features.

I've used a few different ones from the original sveasoft down to dd-wrt which is what I'm using and would recommend. I have heard great things about tomato though but have not used it.

BTW I had the same issues with freezes and dd-wrt fixed it right up (most of the modified ones should fix it for you).

yes, DD WRT is what i was leaning toward as well, I probably won't use most of the features (basically only portforwarding for my bittorrent needs), but what really is attractive about this firmware is the ability to give more power to your wireless connection. Another question, what file do i need to download for the firmware upgrade, i have wrt54gl router, I believe i posted up a link for this paticular router on top of the page

Is your wrt54gl version 1? if so, then it is supported by dd-wrt. dunno with other versions.

Linksys WRT54GL 1.0 CL7Axxx
Linksys WRT54GL 1.1 CL7Bxxx

"For upgrading from the original Linksys firmware, please use the generic mini version (dd-wrt.vXX_mini_generic.bin) and flash it from the web GUI interface. After this first flashing you can change to any other distribution, if you want. "

I have a similar issue but I am using WRT54G. I know these routers are known to be bad for torrents, and thats what my main issue is. I tried upgrading to DD-WRT through the web interface of the router and I get an error saying that 'upgrade failed'. Any idea? Do I need to reset the setting first and then upgrade? Another questions, after upgrading to the DD-WRT firmware, what do I need to do in order for the router to work with torrents properly. thanks

What version of that? If you have the version 5, you need to use mini-DD-WRT(not sure the exact name??).

I have a similar issue but I am using WRT54G.

I have to check once I get home but I beleive it is 1.0 something. I used the generic mini first. Note, the only reason I want to upgrad is so I can connect to torrents.

Been using the Tomato Firmware for awhile now with the WRT54GL (used HyperWRT before): very easy to install/use, clean simple interface and pretty stable with the advance options for BT/VoIP connections.

You may need to reset (with the button) after the mini flash too.

You may want to try a factory reset through the GUI first before flashing.
