I am debating over these two brands of memory for my laptop, and wondering if anyone can give me any suggestions as to which brand is better in general, or if it's specific to the particular type of memory that you get?

For laptop memory, next to no difference or better preference. Warranty is still in the states for both types, and both have lifetime warranty.
When it comes to desktops, different story.

Thanks for the input.
What would be the preferred brand for desktops? Just for future reference because I am hoping to build a desktop system sometime soon too.

Comparing "Corsair" versus "Crucial" alone is pretty ignorant - both brands have different product lineups and both offer a "value" product as well as an "enthusiast" product. You need to be more specific in your comparisons; for example, in the desktop area, comparing Crucial Ballistix versus Corsair's Value Select is not a fair comparison.

Agreed.
Personally, for desktops and espcially for laptops, the value stuff should suffice if your not overclocking.
If you plan to overclock..then go for the good stuff.

I think he meant in general which one is better for a laptop, warranty .etc It's not like he is overclocking his laptop LOL
As posted by korruption for desktop you have to compare apples to apples here, so value to value and performance to performance. Most motherboard manufacturer's test their boards with Corsair memory, so many people prefer it, although Crucial's ballistix line is right on par with performance and they use mainly Micron IC's. If I had a choice, I would probably take the crucial ballistix for desktop.

Thank you everyone for the input. I am just gathering some general information on which brand is better in terms of quality of the chips and failure rates, etc. I probably won't be doing any O/Cing so the details probably won't concern me that much at this point. But I suppose the two brands are quite similar anyways and the deciding factor is probably going to be the price.

Crucial is owned by Micron, so you'll pretty much get Micron chips on Crucial memory most of the time (if not all, save for supply issues). So as for the chips being good quality, I would think so.

I use OCZ. Not bad. Good service. Once I got a problem with a piece (overheating in PC) I sent it in and got replacement later on with newer design.
And they have an office in Markham.

basically for the notebook i would look at price between the 2. both are known to be exelent memory companies.
i look more to where i buy it. if the store handles the rma or if i have too. if store does then you save money. also finding out how they ship rma can be important becuase some companies that ship from the states use ups ground and ups ground loves to hit you with a brokerage fee that costs more than the shipping does on most computer products.

If you were buying Value 5300 DDR 2 677 for a desktop which is better? Could you also rate Kingston to Corsair and Crucial?
