Hello.. Anyone know of a freeware program to print labels to a dot-matrix printer? I came across a "new in box" dot matrix printer. I would like to buy some labels and use it for "dedicated label printing". It would be great if I could find a program that I could boot off a CD or something so whenever I wanted to label print I would just pop in the CD.

I would like something that would give me a list of companies (which I have entered) and for example I could push #1 to print "ABC company", or number #2 for "EDF company"... Anyone know where to start?

Why dot matrix? You don't have an existing printer?

You can just use Word with the built in label templates. Make one for each address you use.

Are you looking to do tonnes of labels?

Can you even get labels on the dot-matrix feed sheets?

Dot-matrix is a dead technology.. it's like digging out a 'new-in-box' 286 machine. Sure it works, but it's not pretty and extremely slow by today's standards. Not to mention dot-matrix printers make a huge racket.

Heck.. why not just get a Label printer? They go for 50-100 dollars and offer much better quality and speed then you'd get with the dot matrix.. most come with good quality software too for desining labels and doing mail merges to print lots of labels at once with varied addresses/names, etc.

www.dymo.com is a big name for label printing.

Something like this: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1333469&CatId=243 would be much less of a hassle to use than messing around with a dot matrix printer.

The only purpose of a dot matrix printer that I can think of is multi-part form printing ...

Printing on carbon/carbon less multi-layer forms is another use.. that and industrial applications where the thing has to last 10 years and be used once a year while enduring pretty dirty conditions that would kill a laser or inkjet.

*did some research out of curiosity*

I have a label maker... It has "cartridges" for labels but they are REALLY expensive.

I can get a roll of 5000 labels for around $50 or less.... The dot-matrix ribbons are pretty cheap also.

I have a laser printer already. What I don't like is feeding sheets through teh laser printer.. I only usually print out 2 or 3 labels at a time so it is a pain to use the sheet style labels...

This method is way more cost effective... although I only print 2 or 3 at a time I usually print a bunch throughout a year....

EDIT - I guess I can print one label sheet full of ABC company and anotehr full of DEF company but still , the dot matrix labels are WAY cheaper.. and I also want to be able to do one two at a time easier than the label sheet solution

Personally, I just hand write all my labels/envelopes. I'm so anti-technology for someone in the technology field. :cheesygri
