C$69 + free shipping for a 2.5" 80GB external is pretty hot ... and I have to assume the HD comes with a 5-year warranty ... http://accessories.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=ca&l=en&s=bsd&cs=cabsdt1&sku=A0912381

Geez ... What's happening at Dell.ca ? 'Price error sale' has become a weekly thing ...

This external USB HD is a 2.5" HDD, not the a same as the 500GB 3.5" HDD.
The external 2.5" HDD don't require external power source.

But it worked out well for Dell. They now have everyone checking out the site daily for new pricing errors. It's a great plan and publicity stunt for Dell as everyone will be check out the site for more pricing errors. ;)

If you guys don't need a HD right away, Costco (assuming you have or know someone with a membership), will have $20 off their WD 160GB HD from July 15-22. I believe that'll put the Costco unit at around $100+TAX.

Is this similar to the Dell? 2.5" no external power source required?

Where did you get this info? If it is legit, it is not a bad deal. A 160 GB HD, twice the capacity of the 80 GB for 20 or 30 dollars more.

Here's the link to the coupon that is posted in the RFD costco thread:

I was at Costco yesterday and saw the drive, but unfortunately, I am not able to recall if the regular price is $129 or $119. So, it'll be $20 off one of those prices.

Hi...do you guys know if I can take this hard drive out of its enclosure and put it in my laptop which uses a 2.5 inch IDE...I called DELL and they keep giving me the runaround and transferring me cuz nobody knows...they just keep saying, "we don't know but if its possible then we don't recommend it becasue it will void your warranty"...I don't care about the warranty, I just need a cheap hard drive for my laptop...thanks.

Yes you can. This bundle is basicly a harddrive and external harddrive enclosure. HDD is Seagate Momentus 5400.3 Ultra ATA (ST980815A) and Freedom9 FreeStor Mini210 - 2.5inch Ext. HDD Enclosure (DS-210UB). So it should be definitely able to open up and take the HDD out.

I checked Seagate website and according to them this ST980815A has 5 year warranty. I am looking forward to buy this ext HDD.

You can't tell by the packaging. The best way to confirm this without opening the case is by looking in Device Manager for the drive name and model or use the WD Tools that came with the drive.. If it ends with BEV then SATA or VE for IDE. Remember the WD HDD Enclosure is made of plastic (look very nice by the way) and the HDD only comes with a 1yr warranty. There should be a thread about WD160GB on RFD. I bought the WD120GB one before and return it because it was IDE and the case was plastic. If it were SATA only that may change my mind. But too bad....

**Edit after checking the warranty policy from western digital again**
Warranty on WD Passport Portable HDD are 3yr if purchased since March 1, 2007. I must have purchase mine before March 1, 2007 at the time.

It comes seperately. You just use the HD, sell the case, no effort (to open up the case) required.

Thanks for the info... too bad there was no easy way of telling if it's SATA or UATA before the purchase. Luck of the draw i think.

Hmmm... should I get this, or wait for the next DOTD, where I can get 250GB for about $90? Less warranty, but bigger size.

Does the Passport have a 5-year warranty?

jasperException
May 8th, 2007, 02:27 PM
No. External passport harddrive from Western Digital has only 3 yr warranty. Before it was 1yr but effectively if purchased since March 1, 2007, as long as it is not passport pocket harddrive, it will have 3 yr warranty.

http://support.wdc.com/warranty/policy.asp

WD Passport Pocket Harddrive look like this:
http://www.westerndigital.com/global/images/products/frnt/wdfPassport_Pocket.jpg

WD Passport Portable Harddrive look like this:
http://www.westerndigital.com/global/images/products/frnt/wdfPassport_Portable_2.jpg

Because of the warranty change, this will make it a tougher decision to go for the price reduced WD Passport from Costco or this deal. I probably will consider getting the WD Passport from Costco and hoping it is a SATA HDD inside.

Check out the existing WD Passport 160GB from Costco thread:
http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=435583&highlight=passport

In regard to the existing WD Passport 120Gb from Costco (see thread below), there is some info to determine which one is SATA or IDE from the packaging but based on my experience and the RFDers who purchased the drive, they found that the outside package doesn't necessary mean you gonna get a IDE version.
http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=397435&page=7&highlight=passport

OMG, just checked the coupon above and found that I need to wait until July 16 to 22, 07 for the coupon to take into effect.

It comes seperately. You just use the HD, sell the case, no effort (to open up the case) required.

Now when it comes to warranty on the Dell bundle, that will be a very interesting subject as Dell will only provide their exchange warranty within the first 30 days and after that it will be the manufacturer's warranty. Now imagine if after the first 30 days, who do you contact for warranty? Freedom9 or Seagate? What I am guessing is that if the HDD is dead or need replacement, you call Seagate and tell them that the harddrive was bundle under the purchase and give them the serial number which at that time they will let you know that it is cover or not. Or if the enclosure is not working, then you call Freedom9 to get that cover. The interesting part is if you sell the enclosure or open and take the harddrive out would either Freedom9 or Seagate still honor it or would they say that because you open it or it will void the warranty. As well would it be wise to keep the enclosure for warranty purchase?

My opinion on this one is that it should be ok for warranty if you take the harddrive out. Its the same concept of buying an enclosure and the harddrive within on invoice. What do you guy think of this?
