I was at the Costco in Ancaster, Ontario at lunch and noticed that they had 21' Little Giant "Like" combination ladders for a few cents under $150. These are heavy duty industrial/contractor Grade I ladders. IMO this is an amazing deal.
I picked one up. Got it home with the front seat folded in my '99 Civic.

is the ladder heavy?

It's not "Featherlite" and because of it's Swiss army knife like application it does have a bit of extra weight. But... I wouldn't consider it significantly heaver then a typical 21' extension ladder.

Pretty good ladder.
They are Cosco ladders (http://www.djgusa.com/cosco/searchresults.asp?searchType=category&searchValue=31).
Walmart has the same one for $169 and another one that is Grade II (Medium duty) but with slightly different construction (different locking mechanisms) for $189 as well.
Had picked up the medium duty $189 one a while ago before Walmart or Costco started carrying the Heavy Duty one.

so whats the difference between heavy duty and medium duty? Isnt the costco deal better than the one from Wal-Mart?

Heavy duty is a lot heavier but way more steady. Full extension is when the weight is felt.
Really tempted to add to to my 11' and 28' collection.
I've a std 28' grade I, even fully extended it's solid and steady with little bounching during climbs/descends. Too bad it's hell to move.

Costco selling Cosco... what a match! Do they have the smaller version for cheaper?

The Heavy duty one has extra welds on the steps and a slightly different step design to support heavier weight. But the locking mechanism for the medium duty one is all metal where as the heavy duty one is a plastic-metal mix. Only little differences between the two.
The Heavy duty one is the same at both Costco and Walmart. Just wanted to throw prices that I found out there so people can compare.
I would have gone with the heavy duty one from Costco and saved $40+tax, but those weren't available when I purchased mine a few months ago.

Its $299 at canadian tire for a similar little giant knock off.
The costco cosco one is very good and heavy at almost 50lbs. Can't figure out how to use it as scoffold however.

It's a cheap knock off... made in Korea or something.
If you want a good ladder, take a look at the Jaws ladders. THey are made in Canada. Top quality... will outlast you!

I think you have to use the pieces to build something like a work horse. The middle hinged piece is one of the stands and the two outter pieces can be locked together for the 2nd stand. Then you'll need 2x10 or something to bridge the 2 to build the scaffold.
They are made in China, but are supposed to have a limited life-time warrenty. They are made quite well and are great for the price.

Costco has a Jaws also and comparing the two, the cosco easily wins if you need a tall step ladder.

Your asking complete strangers on an internet forum how tall your house is? Good luck with this.

For most houses, yes - unless you're in a 3 story house or there are no low points (ie. 15')

The tough part is trying to figure how to get the "two outter pieces locked together". The littlegiant uses an extra U shapped bracket to attached them but the cosco is mind boggling.
Costco has a great return policy and better than any warrenty.

Just noticed that too. I'm going to have to buy one at the reduced price and return it with the receipt from today's purchase.
I took the ladder for a test drive and washed the 2nd floor windows. It's solid and the wider top and bottom makes it very stable. It's 41lbs and at full extension (21') it can be a awkward to raise and lower.

I don't suppose there are sizes other than the 21'?
I'm looking for a 32' extension ladder for DIY gutter-cleaning a 2-story home.
HD $185, Rona $195. Grade II. What does "Grade II" mean? Good/Safe enough?

??? 21' isn't high enough to reach the roof (for gutter cleaning) on our 2-story home (we have half of a bsmt showing from ground up). Hopefully 32' will do the trick.

Have you tried extending it as high as it can go and climb up top? I got an inexpensive $100 extension ladder from Canadian Tire and it wobbled badly when I got up there. I took it back and wanted to hold out for a little giant.
I'd love a cheaper one if it's sturdy.
These combination ladders are too heavy for continous usage by a trades person that travels alot. It's not too bad for the first couple of service calls, but then it starts feeling like a brick; mounting the ladder becomes a chore.
I can mount a 20' Grade I ladder by myself, but am unable to do so with these combination ladders; I may just be weak. :(

I extended it all the way to reach the windows on the 2nd floor. There is no wobble effect with this ladder. It felt very solid. What is also nice is that the ends flair out which gives you a little more foot room on the top steps.
I understand your concern about the wobble, I was helping my dad install windows last year and he borrowed the neighbours extension ladder. That thing would bow and creak; it did the job but it didn’t feel very safe.

I've seen that and its too tiny so see anything of detail. Tried emailing the company but no reply. The best macgyverism I've some up with seems very unsafe.
The costco coupons can be used between June18-24 so just go to customer service during that time with the coupon and your card and they will credit you. All the stuff in costco is price guarenteed forever which is nice. No need to wait for the coupons, just buy now and get credited later.
For $109.99 is a true RFD.

I have a 17' Werner one from Costco a few years ago. It comes with the U shaped brackets in a carrying case. This one uses a different mechanism?

Yes the cosco one doesn't use a U bracket. You have to somehow flip the rail pins over and link the two together. Its a real puzzle.

A 28' grade I should reach most 2 story home leaving several feet above the top. For those that actually climbs on the roof those several extra feet provides a hand hold when you get off the roof. A ladder that just reaches is fine for getting on the roof but hell to get off.

Yeah, it's weird, unless for the sale, they were able to get them cheaper, can confirm, current price on the shelf is $149, they used to be $139 in the fall... Hopefully they will honour the price they show in the coupon book!

Worth every penny. If you just need a 6 foot step-ladder you can remove the 2 extensions and cut the weight of the ladder in half. This has gotten a lot of use at my new home.

I bought pretty much the exact ladder a year ago at Totem (owned by Rona) for $165. Looking at the Costco version, my older model is ALL metal - maybe some aluminum but there is no plastic like the Costco one seems to have (where each rung connects, there is a plastic cover and the locking ubolts seem less sturday as well). Mine came with a case with the 2 ubolts and is relatively easy to seperate and is rated for 300lbs. I'm about 250 and its has no problems when I have it fully extended - no wobbles at all. Its heavy though and I wouldn't want to carry this around all day.

For those who bought this today or already own this: Is there anything in the middle to hold the two sides together? One of my friends told me that there is no locking in the middle so not good. But I refuse to believe that they would create such a ladder and there would be nothing to hold the two sides together.

Hi Everyone, to answer my own question and other people who are curious. Yes it does lock. To lock it just spread both sides out till you hear the click.
And to unlock just press and turn the black knob in the middle and you will hear the click. Do the same on the other side and presto!

picked up one at Markham store today for $134.99 + TAX - $30 coupon. Not sure it is good or not yet, and not going to use it within a month for sure, just becasue saw 12 ladders when I stepped in the store and when on the way back to cash to check out other stuffs, there were only 2 left on shelf, suddenly decided to take one too. With Costco's return policy, no worries anyways.

To those asking how to link the two extension sides together....
- lay the ladder flat.
- unlock the two spring loaded locking pins that fit into the rungs.
- slide the extension off of the hinged section.
- repeat for the other side.
You should now have three sections of the ladder, the one hinged section and the two free sections that you just removed.
To attach the two un-hinged "free" sections simply do this...
- lay one of the loose sections on the ground with the rungs facing down.
- lay the other section on top, also with the rungs towards the ground.
- use the spring loaded locking pin to attach the section on top to the bottom one.
- stand them up and spread the feet apart.
I read the instructions...
Hope that clears things up for those who were asking.

Anyone experiences there is too much free plate in between the inner section and outter section. By wiggleing left and right, there is about 1/8 inch on the front side and 1/16 on the back side. If it is fully extended, I feel it is not safe. It is totally safety concern. Before I return it for exchange, please do me a favor to check it out and post the result. Thanks

Does anyone know how this ladder compares to the Jaws ladder? On Jawsladders.com the 22 foot is $329.
