$499! Pretty decent deal for a basic notebook.

It's a very basic notebook. My b/f bought a V2410 for $759 almost three years ago. (2410 being Turion-based, but still.) This is a borderline deal. Not a bad price, but these things are on the trailing edge of high-tech now; probably priced a bit more than it's worth.
Still, as a basic workhorse computer, this isn't a terrible price. It's not cutting edge, but it'll serve you well for a year or two.

many ppl on RFD rated compaq lappy as crap. is it true?
it is a good price, but i am a bit reluctant to place the order.

I tried to order that laptop at around 2am this morning.
Everything seemed to go through, but when I did the Interac banking payment, got an error and CC doesn't have an order on record from me.
Seemed like a lot for the money.
It's no longer on the web site.

Be careful that you don't confuse many ppl with many posts from a small but vocal minority. I've had a couple of different compaq laptops and had no issues with them.

much faster CPU, more HD space, Brand New.
The only drawback is you may get slightly less battery life with this one.

Hmmm i would never EVER touch a compaq/hp laptop ever again...dvd-rw drive is dying on me, when burning at 8x...it actually burns at 1x, and alot of skipping/read errors. Contacted HP = reinstall drivers?!!? its a hardware thing...no where a soft prob. I did what I was told...same prob! Their technical team is pretty "smart". Cpu 3800+, shows 791mhz?!?! other then that AMD cpu is pretty fast and reliable, Love the speed...well better then my previous Intel laptop
Oh yeah, this is ice cold deal...its a demo, aka full of dust/fingerPrints/bacteria :P

So are your experiences regarding this exact laptop model# or just the brand in general? I assume the laptop is off warranty? If not, why not just send it back? Does your cc provide any extended warranty coverage?
hmmm, this thread is making me feel a little less bad about passing up/returning that Compaq laptop during the crazy Staples laptop clearance sale going on several months back?
I wonder if it was a sign? When I was debating whether to buy the Compaq or HP laptop, a lady nearby was loudly saying she would never buy a Compaq due to poor reliability. Meanwhile, the manager said it wasn't bad, just buy the extended warranty as she used it 2X for her Compaq laptop?
The Compaq 2670 was $600 versus the current deal at $500. But the Compaq was a 14", AMD64 at 2Ghz with 2 GB RAM and bluetooth support!! With performance like that, perhaps it was still worth it to gamble on the Compaq!

i went to the source today, all their demos are locked in a glass cabinet. so where is the dust and fingerprint?

Your buying a flacking demonstrator last-generation Pentium-M system when there are NIB, dual core, current gen systems for 200-300$ more.
It's a warm deal at best. Keep in mind this is an older gen system, which means is been sitting on that glass for the last year, on 12 hours a day. There's wear & tear & usage there. It's probably been manipulated a few dozen times during that time by employees and people wanting to get a better feel.
Bottom line, your getting a pre-owned system.
This is a slightly pessimistic view, but hey, it might not be so far off!

The usual disclaimer applies--your results could vary, sometimes a demo means near mint/brand new. Othertimes, it's scratches/dents/fingerprints/dust. Or as someone mentioned, long hours demo-ing stuff.

i cannot stand the small fonts on 15.4 widescreen, so i am selling this laptop to RFDers. Not everybody hate widescreen. except the small fonts, i love this one. although it is a demo, it arrived like a new one, in perfect condition.
it arrived on 15th, i have another week to return it. and it is not available at the source anymore.
personally, i think it is a good deal. i am selling it at 564.99, which is price i paid.
pls PM me if you are interested. Vancouver pick up only. thanks for your attention.

you're going to have a difficult time finding a laptop with larger fonts than this one. Although screen quality affects text readability a lot, so you might have much better luck with a newer model.

now i am looking for a regular 4:3 1024*768 laptop. that is what is the specs of my current laptop. but it is too slow. i need a new one. i am thinking of buying a desktop now.
i did a search by"i hate widescreen" on google, and many ppl shared my pains.

Yeah, that's about the biggest you can get, very few still support that resolution though. I've personally had no trouble adapting to 1280x800 @ 15.4" WS, I find it much easier to read than a 17" desktop LCD. I'm usually an advocate for lowres but I find 1280x800 almost perfect, in fact I wouldn't mind going to 1440x900 on a 15".
Well wtv, good, luck, I'm sure they still make those 1024x768 laptops, though it would either be an older model or business notebook.
