Hey all,

Well I think I am going to need to do with a new ISP. I am with Rogers and have their extreme and everything was good until about Monday of this week. I was able to download 700k/sec and upload at 100k/sec but Rogers enabled some new throttling and now it's what I would call super slow, but now it's slow and I am not paying $60 month for crap service so I am looking for a new ISP.

I would prefer not having to buy a modem and thats about my only thing. I would love to go with cogeco but they are not in Toronto. I was also looking at TekSavvy Solutions Inc. which has a 5M/640 service for only $30 a month. Looks good except I haver to buy a modem.

Anybody else have any tips? I am in Toronto so anything around here would be nice. I don't think Bell is a good idea either as it is $60 a month also for the same thing as TekSavvy Solutions Inc.

Thanks all

My first suggestion would be to post this in the correct forum... I'm guessing you, too, are using tabbed browsing.

Next, you can get a DSL modem for cheap, from Canada Computers ($2x.xx). Not sure about the quality, but the price is right (there's a thread about it in the "Hot Deals" section).

Unfortunately there's not much you can do about the throttling, but should you decide to stick with Rogers (after all, they'll only throttle for a month or two at the most, at least that has been my experience), you can call them to ask for a lower monthly price (ask them to pricematch any number of cable providers in your area ... such as 3web).

Otherwise, Tekksavy is probably your best bet. But keep in mind that the speed they advertise may not be the speed they offer. Last time I was with Bell, their 3.0Mb service was only 0.5Mb for me, as I was pretty far from the CO. So before you call Tekksavy up, you might want to sign up for one of those no-obligation, cheap 3-month offers from Bell, just to see how good of a service you can get through DSL.

Yeah sorry about the wrong sections, firefox tabs always screw me up.

Well I can handle the throttling for a week or 2 but I download alot of legit stuff through bit torrent so it's not like I am doing illegal stuff and I am suffering for no reason and it really blows

It is a good idea so see how far I am away from the Bell CO as I would hate to get a dsl and then only be able to download at 100k/sec when I should be able to do 500 k/sec

I am looking around at reviews and people seem to like that Tech place alot but I have only found 3 reviews.

I will check out that link, Thanks

you say Teksavvy is only $30 a month but Rogers is charging you $60.. if you do the math and buy your own modem don't you think you'll be saving a lot of money if you just buy your own modem and go with Teksavvy??

I think I am gonna order this. Buying modems suck but Roger is really sucking right now. I tried to download a family album yesterday and usually get 500k/sec from this server. Yesterday I was getting 150k/sec. I tried to download a legit torrent this morning. 30k download and 2.8 k average upload. WTF is wrong here?

Thanks guys, any other places to look at is appreciated.

Thanks

The free DSL? Sounds good but nothing is free in life!

I think Bell is doing throttling also. Check it out at www.dslreports.com

3Web is ok if the service is not lousy. You can keep and use your modem with 3web. Cheaper and that's all. Heard a lot of bad things about them. Mainly about customer service. Never dealt with them before but first email question was replied a month later that made me change my mind.
