The 2nd generation comes in different colors while the 1st was ony white or black.
The 2nd generation have a choice of 2, 4, or 8 GB of capacity while the first generation had 1, 2, 4 GB models.
The 2nd generation screen is brighter.
The 2nd generation is aluminum clad which meant it did not scratch as easy as the 1st generation which had a plastic front.
Also, the 2nd generation has an option as an audio recorder, which meant you can record concerts or lectures.

Are the 3rd gen models coming out soon?
I think Apple is gearing for some new models either in the late summer or early fall

go to apple.com/support and key in the serial number. It will tell you the generation and warranty info.

There are always new models coming out each year as Apple updates its product lines. If you really want one, buy one. Otherwise, it will be always waiting for the next best thing.
