quite possibly
a 30GB/60GB cap already exists for new users
My account is about 2-3 years old and is still currently on the unlimited plan. If it changes, I'll just switch

Don't believe everything you hear. Especially when speaking to Sympatico CSR's - they usually do not know what they are talking about.

yeah, i got a call yesterday. They said after two months, there's a 60gb cap. There's limited offers where at that time you can pay an extra $3 a month to keep it unlimited.

Sympatico has already capped new customers. There has not been any official release of whether or not they will cap existing customers.

60Gb is OK for casual surfers. But I wouldn't pay $40 if I just surf the net or check email. I'll go for a lighter version or even dial up which is much much cheaper. Rogers has cap also but 100GB I think. It's more than 60GB for sure. I've heard a few others over the limit and still OK. They are not that tough on it.

They changed my cap from unlimited to 2GB/month without any warning. First indication was when I received my bill for $30 bandwidth charges. Canceled the same day.
I was on High Speed, 3mbps profile.

on the official site they still haven't updated any news on that, so I wouldn't be too worried until they officially state it.

Ok I am quite skeptical about this but here it goes.
I called Technical Support at Bell HSE tonight and got to talk to a nice CSR.
I was wondering about by line profile which I thought was quite slow. Started talking and I have been a HSE User since day1. Paying 39$ a month right now on a contract which I renew yearly to get the deal.
He tells me about this offer.
Ultra High Speed Edition on one-Year Contract including the Home Network Wireless modem.
Months 1,2,3 = FREE
Months 4,5,6 = 25$
Months 7 through 12 = 39$
Months 13+: 50$ (but no longer on contract at that point)
So i added it all up 309$ for the year compared to 480$ and instead on High Speed, I get Ultra High Speed and NO CAPS since they grandfathered me.
To me this is a good deal ? Sounds almost to good to be true and I hope it's not a mistake by the CSR.
We'll See...

OK, can someone actually answer me this question?
How does this large amount of downloading actually make selling service unprofitable for Bell?
I mean, they're charging CAD$40-CAD$47 per month for their services, while other providers seem to happily offer truly unlimited service for CAD$30-CAD$35 per month.
Any of Bell's potentially higher costs such as marketing and corporate overhead are fixed costs, and therefore having more customers is _better_.
I'd also assume that these big downloaders are infrequent users of their customer service (which probably costs many dollars per hour to operate, all costs considered, though it sounds like with their outsourcing, they probably do it cheaper than their competitors, quality aside).
Unless they're paying terrible prices for internet termination (which I'd doubt, they have more clout than anyone), it just doesn't make any sense to me.
There are only two reasons I think this could work for them:
1. They think people will actually happily pay this extra amount per month when they do indeed go over (hahaha)
2. People will just conserve their bandwidth usage, figure that they mind as well just stop downloading shows and get Expressvu instead, not talk to anyone else about other options, not waste Bell's CSR money by calling in to complain or haggle over a better contract, not cancel all of their other Bell services when they potentially discover how they're also getting screwed on "Network Charges" on their LD...

Sympatico will keep it's high prices and prosper because 95%+ of the population would not go with a service like TekSaavy. They would not feel comfortable buying their own modem, etc, or not being with a big name like Bell.
They are lowering their own costs by filtering out the real-high bandwidth users that run FTPs, non-stop Torrents etc. Essentially their margins are much thicker then TekSavvy and all those other places, while at the same time they need to cut costs because they are a huge beuracracy, with higher inherent costs then the small startups offering cheaper service.

so i got their new contract via email.
Monthly rates include access and modem use. Early cancellation of your service before the end of the 12-month term will result in an early cancellation charge of $100.00. At the end of the 12-month term, the service will continue on a month-to-month basis and you will be charged the current regular monthly rate for the service at that time.
obviously they got rid of the unlimited bw part...
i still got no response for my previous question so i would appreciate if someone could answer that one :D
or suggestions about what to do

They have two versions of the contract, unlimited and not unlimited. Trust me, they do still offer unlimited to those who ask or are eligible.

This contract - https://contracts.sympatico.ca/3495hr/?l=en - is still valid and is available to existing users. It does include, within the contract, unlimited bandwidth. We just "signed" it last week and it works well.

One of the best companies around right now for DSL. I switched over to Teksavvy after being with my old isp for a few years and Had bell for a little while also. I'm very happy with teksavvy. If I need support I can call them/e-mail and they know what they are talking about, unlike bell techs.
If anybody is looking for another isp I highly recommend these guys, you wont be sorry.
