Typically the question is LCD or plasma. I wouldn't buy DLP.

If your hooking up an xbox and your PC, stick with an LCD. Don't waste your time with projection. I would be too nervous to play xbox all day on a plasma because of potential burnin.

your question and link are totally OFF.
u want to compare DLP and PLASMA and have a link to a LCD RPTV. LOL
Well, LCD Rear projection > DLP, so I don't blame him ;)
And at $2K, you'll only get 1080P like the TV OP linked to if you choose LCD RP. If you want a 1080P LCD, be prepared to pay $3.5-4K for a 50" model. Plasmas aren't even common in the 1080P level so I don't think they're economic either way, plus, Plasmas are slowly being phased out by LCDs, so I don't think we should continue investing in them.

DLP > LCD projection. The link goes to an SXRD, which is liquid crystal on silicon technology. That's distinct from a straight LCD projection set and far superior IMO.

Regular LCD RP > Regular DLP
LCD bulbs are comparably cheaper to replace, do not suffer from rainbow effects, and LCD RP is a much more mature technology than DLP is, making LCD RP more stable and easier to QA.
Given the choice, I would get a LCD RP over DLP. Similarily, I would get an LCD over a Plasma.

Just get a plasma and don't worry about which type of projection is better.

I dont like projection. IMO Plasma's are way better. Definitely better picture quality. I game on my plasma almost everyday for two years and dont have burn in.

If you want something that looks sleek & sexy to hang on your wall, get a plasma/lcd. If you care about picture quality, this SXRD rear projection is the absolute best, especially at $2,000.
I use this one to for watching HD programs, PS3 games & hi-def Blu-Ray movies. It is just stunning with full 1080p resolution. It always ranks on top of most professional reviews (Sound & Vision, Widescreen Review, etc.) because of the picture quality.
At this price range, you won't find any plasma with full HD 1920x1080 capability. Basically, you're throwing away 1/2 the pixels with a 1366x768 set. The issue I had with lcds is the colour range, especially the black level. In supposedly dark scenes, most lcds have problems as black tends to look like dark grey. Really annoying when watching movies. I also have a problem with ghosting on LCD - very visible while watching hockey.

If you know your stuff, you'd get an LCD. DLP, Rear Projection, Plasma is the stuff I wouldn't get.

Forget LCD and Plasma!
Are you severely limited by the amount of space your TV takes up? Are you stinking rich?
If you answered no to both questions, why would you go ahead and buy a Flat Panel TV? No point! There are much better and cheaper alternatives, such as the ones mentioned. The LCoS in the SXRD is a great alternative technology. Sony's worked out the kinks it had with the first generation already (a-la-green-blob issues). As for DLP you can try to find one that uses LEDs rather than the regular bulb such as this model:

Now to all the guys that have helped me out... Thank you!! I do appreciate it.. Right now I do have a panasonic 47" which is 5 years old now.. its quite a monster.. but I do want to upgrade this year. I am still on the fence regarding 720p and 1080p. Is it true that you really only notice a difference in picture if you are 3 feet away from the screen? My panasonic is set at 1080i and when i have it at that setting is that better than getting a plasma or lcd at 720p??

to all ppl that have recommended PLASMA....you really want to f'ed the guy over don't you?
AS A PLASMA OWNER...DO NOT GET A PLASMA FOR ANY GAMING. PLEASE! You'll definitely have a higher risk on burn-in
Stick with a LCD

What plasma do you have?
Has it been braken in "properly"?
Do you have burn-in or just some IR after you game?

it's broken in...I have an HP/Panny
but i still sometimes get some scary residual still images from time to time (not burn-ins)
so that's why I would definitely not recommend a plasma for any gaming.
Watching stuff on computer, dvd, HDTV, I would recommend a Plasma.

I wouldn't recommend plasmas period. Current generations of LCDs are already capable of producing plasma-comparable picture quality and deep blacks. Plasmas are on the verge of being phased out (despite Panasonic denying it) and I surely would not want to buy into a dying technology. Get an LCD and you'll have NOTHING to worry about. No breaking in, no whatever. Again, you don't buy a TV to break it in, you buy it to watch.

For a 50" screen, the optimum viewing distance when 1080p is noticable is between 6-10 feet. If you plan to sit 11+ feet, you might as well get the 720p set.

yeah but current generation LCDs aren't cheap...and price points are very important to Canadians.
At the same point last year...i would still have picked a Plasma....if I was going to buy another flat panel this year...it's a different story...im 50/50 on plasma/lcd decision as of today.
And again...if I was a gamer the decision would be too easy...LCD all the way

Be sure to check users' other posts before taking any kind of recommendation from them (eg. check their references).

yup...you can check my other post about Plasma...did a lot of recommendations over this past year since I have thoroughly enjoyed my plasma unit the past 15 months...my TV is still going strong.
But again...technologies change/improve so as a result my recommendations will also change. (i.e. I have recommended my Brother to get a LCD instead since he's quite careless about electronics....last thing I want him to do is get a burn-in from falling asleep on the couch and then blame it on me)

Interesting how "DLP or Plasma" turned into an LCD thread.
