Was wondering if different brands make a big difference?
What should I be looking for?
Costco has one for $199, a WD I think.
Any suggestions?

I'm not too familiar with the quality of HD's but I know that there is a Seagate 650 GB External going for $239.00 (or somewhere around there) with either BB, FS or Staple. Just can't remember where I saw it.

I think you should avoid Western Digital, I've heard nothing but defect problems from'em. But, those were Internal HDs....

In all honesty, you're better off buying an internal seagate and getting an enclosure. You get the full 5 year warranty, and you are more certain about what brand is inside the thing. Also, you'll probably save about $40-60 doing it this way too.

With the USB External Case for a harddrive, is it quite easy to switch from one HD to another? Anyone know of any external HD that are known to have good quality?

If you can connect an internal hard drive you can connect one of these easily. It is actually a lot easier than installing them. As for brands, I don't know. I bought some cheap enclosure for $10 and it is still clicking along. FS sells some alright ones for reasonable prices.

If you really want to stay ahead you get an enclosure that has ESATA ports on it. I have my external hard drive and on bench mark tests it is actually slightly faster than my internal 7200 RPM. Mainly because it is ESATA II and is slightly faster than my SATA inside. My expresscard ESATA II adapter supports RAID though, I am not sure if I am comfortable though having my chance of data loss double by setting it on RAID 0 though.
