It's just like in that series of AT&T/Cingular TV commercials where the gaps of silence created by dropped calls lead to terrible misunderstandings - only this case involves BlackBerry and real life.

Just as the smoke is starting to clear from today's massive BlackBerry blackout, Rafael Paz, a loss control specialist for a car rental agency, writes to tell me that he has been "getting my e-mails about one to four hours late minimum since yesterday." And it hasn't just been loss control that has suffered, he adds: "This issue sucks. I've been getting grief about it from my now ex-girlfriend thanks to this delay. She thought I was ignoring her e-mails when I was receiving them hours late."

So I write back expressing my fervent hope that he was kidding about the "ex" part. No chance.

"We got into a really bad argument earlier in the day," he replies. "She sent me a few e-mails and when I didn't respond right away, she thought I was ignoring her and called it off. I didn't get the e-mail it was over until around 2 a.m. today."

Not knowing what else to say, I suggest that perhaps this situation might be covered by his BlackBerry service-level agreement. His reply:

"I'll call RIM and tell them to give me an upgrade on a new girlfriend

If she's that unreasonable, then leaving her is already a start in the right direction imo.

dats why you don't get a blackberry. make urself less available to read emails, so that when SERIOUS emails do come, you have an excuse to reply late ;)

Yup, same with field technicians who are forced to carry a pager at all times.

Same reason I don't give out my phone number to anybody. Especially people at work. You don't pay my monthly bill and it's not work property and not to be uesd for work purposes. If you need something you'll know where I'll be. Too lazy to get your arse off your computer chair?? Too bloody bad!

I don't like my communication devices being used as a GPS tracking device or a leash of where I am and where I'm to be.

Uh, she should be aware by now that there was a problem with emails. If she's still giving him grief, why the heck would he want someone like that back?

Perfect example of another insecure male. No wonder why he's wearing a digital leash. And it's Oprah/Dr Phil who seems to tell people that it's the men who are over possessive!

Your absolutely right when your working for somebody. However when you work for yourself always being available by email means sales and excellent customer service.

Anyone who talks **** about crackberry users, just cant afford a data plan :p

I don't have a blackberry. I use a normal cell phone with City fido.

but this is just funny. with all the money and customers that RIM has, it shouldn't be that hard to have had a backup system. only a noob installs an update on a PRODUCTION(running) system without rolling it out in stages and/or testing it.

the problem with a blackberry is that all the data is routed through the company, NOT your cell phone company, so a failure can cause a lot of trouble. its just a clever way for the RIM company to make a lot of money.

http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/newstex/AFX-0013-16100981.htm?cnn=yes
NEW YORK (AP) - BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ:RIMM) said an insufficiently tested software update at the company's network data center was the cause of a service outage this week that left millions of users without wireless e-mail access.

In a statement late Thursday, the company said the outage from Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning was triggered by 'the introduction of a new, non-critical system routine' designed to optimize the cache, or temporary holding space, of the system that handles e-mail sent to BlackBerry users.

RIM said it didn't expect the update to impact users, 'but the pre-testing of the system routine proved to be insufficient.'
The Waterloo, Ontario-based company also said the process designed to maintain service in the event of a failure 'did not fully perform to RIM's expectations,' causing a longer delay before service was restored.

RIM said it ruled out security and capacity issues, along with hardware failure or core software issues, as the cause of the disruption and is improving its testing, monitoring and recovery processes to prevent such an outage from happening again.

The problem occurred at RIM's hub for North American traffic, which routes messages to and from cellular service providers for the roughly 8 million BlackBerry devices now in use.

Many people rely heavily on the devices as a lifeline when they're away from their computers. Even more have simply become accustomed to -- and often obsessive about -- being able to check their e-mail at night and on weekends.

No, a Rim-job.

*Rim-shot*

The relationship was doomed anyways if such a trivial matter as email is the reason for the breakup. Besides, who sends emails and expects an immediate response? Call them or IM.

Anyone with a blackberry expects virtually immediate responses. Sometimes you can't answer calls. Particularly if its sensitive in nature.

No professionals use IM.

Crackberry 406 up, 37 down

Nickname for the popular RIM job communication device named Blackberry. The device, which is a phone, PDA, and e-mail appliance has gained outrageous popularity. Users/owners are typically addicted to checking e-mail and swapping short messages on the device. It appears as though they are addicted as a crackhead is to the pipe.

Is this guy American, he sure sounds like it, blame Blackberry for the failed relationship and not the fact that he might've been a jacka$$, pretty soon he'll start up a frivalous class-action lawsuit against them for 5 trillion dollars. Plus, if she's leaving him over some unanswered emails then good riddance.

If that was really the reason he got dumped, I say it is a good thing. That girl is seriosuly phsyco.

Anyways, I have a blackberry and I don't respond to email instantly. No one at work or personally seem to care or expect responses right away.

maybe not to communicate with the customers ...
but .. jee ... if professionals dont use IM, it would be really stupid of RIM to develop apps like BB Messenger, GTalk, and Y! Messenger for their devices ...

wait .. i think they already have those apps.
