I've been getting lots of calls recently from advertising companies who call and then don't answer the phone.

I call back the # on the call display and that's how I know it's an advertising company.

Any solution to this annoying problem?

Its an automated dialer. They phone you at different times to generate a profile of when you are home, and not home.

just say you are busy at the moment, and ask them for their home phone and say you will call back later. If they say they dont want to, then say "now you know how i feel"

i also did the pick up and hang up trick too. works well.

also tried picking up and answered with a low voice .. sometimes these telemarketers use auto dialers and when/if you talk loud enough it will connect you to an operator .. hence the low voice hehe

I keep getting calls from Rogers, now I have my TV cable and cell phone with them and on my caller ID on my cell phone it says in big letters "ROGERS COMM" whenever I answer no one talks and it immediately hangs up. I get calls 3 to 4 times at random times each day, been going on for a week now. I finally had time to call back and had to hold for 30 mins to talk with a rep finally I get through and complain about it. And they tell me its an outbound sales call that dials 4 to 5 numbers at a time and whoever picks up first will talk to someone and the rest is dropped off. The rep told me they'll put a 'No Solicit" flag on my account so hopefully that solves it.

Robbers calls quite a bit. They keep trying to convert our Bell landline to Rogers when we clearly told them no. They also came door-to-door as well.

A couple times a day i've been getting a call from the same number

It is a recording that say something to the effect "this is not a solicitation. it is an important business matter. please call 1-866-887-0744 back immediatly and be sure to state the phone number you were called at"

I've never called them back. I figure if it was an important business matter, i would not be getting a stupid recording. Anyone else get this? Could it actually be important?

This happened to me recently....this one number kept calling and everytime I answered the phone the person on the other line was silent...finally a few days later I answered but did not speak at all...I was silent on the phone for a good 45 secs until they finally spoke. I then told him to f-off and hung up  A friend suggested next time they call back to moan :cheesygri (but I think that will only get them to call back more)

Do u really want to get back at those telemarketers? Seriously? then listen to this.

Telemarketers can NOT disconnect a call on you, you have to initiate the hangup. When someone calls, just simply place the call on "hold" and put the phone down, go wash the car, take a shower, cook dinner, change the baby's diaper, etc.. then when you come back, the person will still be on the other end of the line guarenteed. Trust me, I left one call off the hook for an hour and came back, the guy was still there and I could tell he was nervous.

You can help by adding their name and number to the database:
www.whocalled.us

I get lots of call from (712)429-02xx calling about an important credit offer and to press 3 immediately.

Actually after a reasonable amount of time, they hang up. Give them 3-5 mintues. They do not wast 5h on a call.

I agree especially for those auto-dialers. The telemarketer does not even have to be on line. What people can hold up the line is the small outfit such as those calling to cleaning your vent.

For the pro, the autodialer calls you. If you pick up the phone, the line will transfer to a telemarketer. He or she will then pick up the line at that time. Hence, it usually has at least 2 seconds of delay. And, that is why those line zapper can work. You can hold the line as you wish, the telemarketer will just push the button and go to another line.

My rule of thumb is if I say hello and no answer within seconds, hang up.

What I did with one telemarketer was just answer then placed the phone on the table. I let it sit there for about 5ish minutes then I picked it up and listened in. The guy was still going on about his stuff before he realized something: nobody was on the other end. Then I heard him ask his boss or supervisor "What do I do? I don't think anyone's th--" haha I believe his supervisor hung up for him.

i think its something to do with their system
i know what when i pick up and say hello and know1 says anything right away, its telemarketting and then i hang up before they say anything

if it's someone i know, they'll call back. if it's not then they don't call back.

I think they're dialing with their headsets and there's a delay so I just hang up right away.

I think they're dialing with their headsets and there's a delay so I just hang up right away.

They don't dial. The system dials. When the system can connect somebody (somebody actually picks up the phone), they system connects the line to a telemarketer. That's why there is a delay.

Sometime when you pick up the phone and the line is dead silence forever. You may think it is a prank call but it may just be the system cannot find an available telemarketer to connect to.

If you are sick of these calls, record a SIT tone on your answering machine before your greeting.

Using the SIT is like a good virus. The tone tells the autodialer that your number has been disconnected, so the dialer won't waste time dialing it again. The autodialer then communicates this through the master list to other autodialers and the next thing you know, no calls.

Of course, it is a little annoying to humans that call, and blocks all autodialers, including the ones you want, like your broker or Sears calling you when your order is in.

The good news is that you can take it off after a couple of weeks, and as long as you follow simple recommendations like screening calls and never saying hello more than once, you will never get put back on the master list.

The Telemarketing Scum page appears to be down, so here is the cached page with details as well as other suggestions on how to block calls.

Are you answering in jail? When people look at you when you pick-up ...

 I know what you're saying though, +1 agreed!

Get call screen:

http://www.bell.ca/shopping/en_CA_ON/118.details

Selectively blocks up to 12 unwanted callers.
Key Benefits

* Flexible: Create a Call Screen list to block up to 12 numbers; add, change or delete them as necessary
* Convenient: Unwanted calls are diverted, though you're still available to other callers
* Simple: Turn Call Screen on and off with ease whenever you choose

Divert unwanted calls to a recording that lets callers know you’re not taking calls at the moment.

Where on earth did you hear that they can not disconnect a call on you?

The technology we're talking about here kids is called a "predictive dialer":

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Predictive_dialer

These things are designed to maximize an agent's "talk time" by predictively dialing the numbers and routing the waiting calls to an agent.

Most of the current crop of predictive dialers don't respond to SIT tones anymore. Remember the telezapper, it issued the first of the three SIT tones. I think you can still buy one at XScargo for $5 or something like that. Now you know why.

If you pick up the phone and there's nobody there within a second, hang up.

Likewise, call display is your friend. When my phone rings at home, I follow two simple rules:

1. I never run to the phone unless I'm actually expecting a call. If my phone rings and I'm not right next to it, I probably won't answer. If it's important, you'll leave a message, right?

2. If I am by the phone and I don't recognize the number, (call display) I don't answer it, either. Again, if it's important, you'll leave a message.

I did some digging once and found some freeware that allows you to plug your modem into the line and effectively block (by picking up and hanging up the line) any calls from specific numbers you specify. So if some twit telemarketers are calling you three times a day, put them on the list and they won't bother you again.
