Most likely it happens more often than one may think. We all know someone who has tried or been successful in scamming the sys.

Long ago and far away a friend of mine and his girlfriend appeared at my door on a fri. eve ready to party in Toronto for the weekend. Being young and single I joined in. Over the course of the event I found out how the party was being paid for.

It seems they had arrived in Toronto on Fri. morn. and went to the closest welfare office and explained to the rep that he was travelling from vancouver home to Kingston and ran out of gas. The rep that he had being from the Jack Layton school of ethics started to cut him a cheque for fuel to get home. Then he mentioned that he had been driving since 3 am that day and was sleepy. The cheque got bigger for accomadations. That is when the girlfriend stood up ( Did I mention that she appeared pregnant?) and said "Well there are still some peanutbutter sandwiches in the car, we can eat those tonight" The cheque got bigger for food. By the time they left the cheque was worth $110.00. Did I mention that they really lived in Kingston and that he had a fill time job as a mason?

I know I said that it was long ago and far away but just to put it in persective gas was $0.49.9 PER GALLON, a 24 beer was just over $5.00, a bottle of rye was $5.50 and a Big Mac was $0.35

Sometimes I tend to ramble on.............

Happens all the time....thats why these people should be required to work for their money. Pay them min wage and they have to work whatever amount of hours in a month their check would equal out to. If min wage is 8/hour make them 15 hours a week, just enough to interfere with anything bogus they have going on!

hmm .. good idea, maybe some mandatory community service, so atleast they would give back something to society.

what pisses me off about this whole scam is that i know there are people working on minimum wage who can barely pay off their rent, but dont seek help, either coz they dont qualify, or because they dont know. but there are people who get around the system at the cost of some who are truly needy.

Welfare fraud. Charge them and let them suffer the consequences.

It's people who defraud the system that make the truly needy look like lazy scammers.
