i'll be going for my G License (Not G-1/G-2) in a week....
Ive done the test here in toronto 2 times now and failed, so this time im going to Lindsay to take it.
So please, any TIPS you PPL can give would help me out a LOT!
PS. i dont have access to a car, unless i rent one so dont flame me for failing the first 2 times
(and i failed ONLY because i merged to slow going on the highway)

If you failed because of your said reason, my suggestion, as my instructor has told me a long time ago...
-Use almost the whole on ramp, and I mean, 3/4 of the whole way until the lane cut off. This allows your car to accelerate to highway speed and prevents you from making unsafe lane changes....
-Don't be afraid to accelerate to 100
Good luck!

I've done my G2 3 times in Lindsay and the 3rd time I passed it.
I heard that G isnt that hard in Lindsay. Just look for blind spots and stuff when changing lanes.
*make sure you check your blind spot everytime you change lane* ;)
And in Lindsay ALL of the people (doing test) are chinese :D:D (mostly Fujian and Fuzhou) :D:D
edit: when going uphill accelerate HARD than change lane in Lindsay
aww 2 times G= 150$ :( :(
WELL GOODLUCK!

My instructor taught me all the routes at newmarket. Just get someone to teach you all the routes and knows everything about the examiners. That helps.

When I had test more than 12 years ago. I was asked by This Guy in St. Catharines why don't you speed up. Its not good if you having such low speed.
Two times he took me to highway and asked same questions.
Both times I denied and said your speed limit sign is 40 here. I cant go like 60 or 80 or even hundred.
He was fuming but couldn't do anything else. Somehow he couldn't fail me the test on that point and I passed the test. Just newed today again.

Maybe he was just practicing the part of the bitching wife. Always telling the
husband to drive faster, turn this and that direction, and why there's no A/C.
Just ignore it, and pretend you are deaf in your right ear.

usually the examiner doesn't talk about how you drive, he just indicates the path.
tips when I took my driving test in Vancouver (perfect score):
-NEVER go faster than the speed limit. Yes, in real driving you drive with the flow of traffic, but on a test, that is an instant failure for speeding.
-Always check your mirrors, maybe once every 5-10 seconds no matter what you are doing. This shows you are aware of all cars around you.
-Stop at all Stop signs at the line. Stop means the wheels are no longer rolling, not just slowing down. Failing to stop is a big deduction.
-Turn on your night time lights when you drive, no matter what time of the day.
-signal for EVERY move you do, even if there are no other cars on the road.
-shift in and out of a parrallel parking spot as many times as you need to, there are no deductions for doing it 50 times (as long as you dont run up on the curb). :)
umm.. that is about it.

No offence or being sexist. Consider all that when you have Woman examiner.
Because almost all my friends on that day who got woman failed.
11 out of 12. All of them were not bad.
I was also failed one month before by a women.
But on other hand, may be just coincidence.
But you are right on checklist.

You should try to find out the route the test will take. Examine the area for the most likely onramps and practice.

Yes, it is a fatal mistake and you will fail if you merge on to the highway at a slow speed- you can ace EVERYTHING else but you WILL FAIL due to slow merge on to highway.
Happened to 2 of my buddies. I passed first time. Gunned the car as soon as I hit that ramp and hit 100 no problem, merged on and did a couple of lane changes and off the highway bang done 100% here you go G licence have a nice day.
ps. when i merge on to highway i always gun the car up to highway speeds...it makes for SUCH a safer merge...I go bananas when I am behind someone who is trying to merge on to the highway at 40km/h (assuming flow of traffic is 100-120)

If they ask you to do some manouvre twice, that's possibly because you messed it up the first time and you are getting a chance to redeem yourself.

I don't know what to tell you. Just drive properly and by the book for your test. If you can't, then you don't deserve your license, because there are already too many people in Markham who are frustrating drivers...

u have to floor it when ur on the ramp to 100 and they like to hear the reving sound because that = ur accelerating. oh yah, when they ask u why dont u speed up, u just tell them, i will be over the limit, it says maximum not minimum.

Exactly. Merging too slow on a highway can lead to a very dangerous situation.

You need to find yourself a car to practice with and once you've decided where you're going to take the test, search up in the right forum about routes people had to take for their test. They are still pretty accurate. Once you have a route, practice them a couple of times.

Can someone explain to me why this is NOT just wrong. If you took your test twice in Markham and failed, why is it ok to take a test in Lindsay, then drive in Markham? Do all you people realize that by helping the OP cheat on his test he may be driving down the street the your family drives on and that he is not qualified to do so? Would any of you put one of your family members in his car the day after he gets his license and let him drive them around town?
Just wondering

I took mine in Stoney Creek...failed the first time because I didn't go fast enough on the highway. Went pretty much 95-99......I was like WTF? am I suppposed to go over the speed limit???Well apprently she said I have to keep up with traffic. So the next time I went I asked the person marking me how fast I should go...He said to keep up with traffic .....so I went 115 and passed...oh and the ramp speed limit is for Trucks not cars(this is what the marker told me)

With some of the differing feedback on what to do while on an on-ramp (either get to the speed limit as quickly as possible or match the flow of traffic), I'd say the best advice is to be adaptable. Driving is not rote memorization of driving procedures, and although you want to show that you know and obey the rules of the road, you want to stay flexible. If anything, you could just ask what they're looking for.
I do second some of the other posters' advice that you definitely need more practice.

So you're saying that people who live genuinely do live in Lindsay and got licensed there are not qualified to drive in Markham?
No sir I never said that at all. And I really do hope that it is not true. I have two employees that drive in from Lindsay every day to work. What I am saying is that everyday driving in Lindsay is not the same as everyday driving in Toronto or Markham. I have driven and lived in Toronto for 44 years. And I will tell you that driving in Toronto in that time has become more aggressive and a me first attitude. Remember that insisting on your right of way in Toronto may be the last thing that you insist on.
My point was that the OP is going to Lindsay to try to get huir / her license because it is eaiser in his / her mind. In my opinion it should be equally as hard.

some tips:
-Accelerate to highway speed as soon as possible
-Allow people to merge on to the highway by changing lanes
-Do not accelerate past 100 or slow down past 90 just to change lanes
cause the examiner told you to
-Always try to use the lane that goes directly off the highway
-Exaggerate movements when checking blind spot and mirrors
-Keep speed at least above 95 if possible
and the most important RELAX
also i suggest you spend an hour or two before your exam just driving the car around so you know how long it takes to accelerate the car to highway speed and just get a better feel of the car since you do not have access to a car
Good Luck, Im sure you will pass this time

Sorry, I assumed since you mentioned Scarborough. As others have mentioned, just make sure you get up to 100 by the time you merge (slower if traffic isn't moving well). People will let you in, but you cannot force them to slow down.

I asked my instructor if it would be easier to go to a smaller city and try the testing area there, but he told me "If you can drive, you can pass". If you can't pass at any of the testing centers, there's a reason. Then again, I wouldn't want to drive on the DVP for the Downsview location.

The ability to control your breaks goes a long way. Smooth ride makes the examiner happier. I've seen people that can do all the things on a road test fail because the examiner was harsher on the person due to break control.
FYI: I had 3 days before my last G test day and I took my last minute exam at Orangeville. Highway speed is 80km/h, 2 lanes. But the concept is the same. Accelerate a little when you change lanes +5km/h is good. Then once you have merged into that lane, ease off the gas until you get back to speed limit. Always always try to give the examiner a smooth ride. ;)

i doubt that was the only reason. a fatal mistake, yes, but not enough to fail you on its own. when i gave my test, i merged at 90, but passed.
in my case, it wasnt much of a question of if i was scared, but my stupid car has poor acceleration.
what car did you drive? get something with good accel ..

This is so true. My instructor told me the female examiner I had doesn't like it if you go too slowly. What did I do? I stuck closely to the speed limit and even went to 110 on the expressway. I passed on the first attempt.

I took my G2 test last September at Morningside and passed on my first try. I could have went to the Vic Park location as its closer to me, but Morningside had less pedestrian traffic and generally less cars it seemed so I took it there.
When I got to the test centre, I only waited like 10-15mins before this guy in his late twenties or so came out to test me. All I did was do a three point turn, an emergency stop, go on the highway a couple of times and do some lane changes and that was it. My test was a little over 20 minutes and I was surprised that it was over so quickly. The most mistakes I made were for not checking my mirrors enough and also that I was driving too slow.
When coming off the offramp of the highway I slowed down much more earlier than I usually do and ended up going pretty slow off the ramp. And then coming back to the test centre there wasn't a speed limit sign so I was barely doing 40kph and the guy told me to speed up to 50k I think.
I think part of it does depend on who you get as your tester though. My friend had to take the test 5 times before he finally passed it. He's a pretty good driver, but on at least 3-4 of those tests he got hit with some minor mistakes that ended up failing him.
For me, I think my G1 test was harder as the tester had me performing more things before he passed me. My G2 tester was pretty laid back and had me do fewer tasks before heading back to the test centre. Then all he says is 'You passed, just check your mirrors more, watch your lane changes and speed.' And thats it.

Most of us are lucky, we get away with the occasional driving mistake. Always remember the next driving mistake you make could be the last one you ever make. Accelerate to highway speed, signal and check your blind spot before you think about getting on the highway.

Hi,
thinking of getting my G also this year.
I've been driving with G2 for more than 2 years after converting my Japanese driving license.
I'm living in Mississauga, the nearest test center will be Etobicoke and Oakville.
Anyone has any comments/ experience having G2 exit-test in those test centers?
Perhaps also info on any good driving instructor in Mississauga that can tip on those two test centers, re. the test-route, etc.
Thanks in advance.
