Hello, just wondering if anybody takes their pets to Ashcott Veterinary Clinic on Steeles/Brimley and if they have any opinions/thoughts on how they are that they can share with me. I currently take my pets to Wellington Veterinary Clinic at McCowan and 407 but find that their prices are pretty steep and thinking of switching them over to Ashcott. I just want to make sure that they're going to a good vet.

No.. Ashcott is not a good place. I took my dog there once because it was cheaper. The next day his leg swelled up to twice the size!!!!

Did you bring your dog back to the vet to see why it's leg was swollen??

I take my dog, 3 years old Shih-Tzu there. Personally, I have no complaints. :)

The doctor blamed the swollen leg on a needle going into the wrong place. Poor doggy's leg was twice the size... best for you to check it out for yourself tho.

I've never taken my pets to Ashcott.
But I have 2 friends who used to take their dogs (A collie and a Golden) to Ashcott and both decided to change to other vets because they didn't like Ashcott. Their complaint was that the vet didn't do a good job of explaining what was going on (The golden had alot of problems). They're both more satisfied with their current vet now.

Okay, I'll share some first hand experience about Ashcott.
I first took my dog there a few years ago upon a friend's recommendation. The vet (female) was nice and she sure knew about dogs (and cats) AND LOVED THEM. They even had some "house pets" there, so you'll feel like being in an animal kingdom.
But then the female vet left, and the only vet there is (I guess it's still is) a male vet of Korean (?) descent. Nothing wrong with that, EXCEPT that his English is CLEARLY not good enough to convey HIS meaning, and I doubt if he understands mine. So if you speak his language, this may not be a problem. There are staffers who speak better English and even Chinese, and work as some kind of translators; but I don't need a translator, HE DOES.
The worse thing is: he is significantly less experienced in identifying problems (of my dog). I simply don't trust his diagnose (AND RIGHTLY SO) e.g. about my dog's ear infection problem. That's after a few visits over a year or so. Never been back.

For just an annual checkup and shot, I think they are fine.

Thanks everyone for sharing their experiences.
My friend takes her dog to Ashcott and also complained about the language barrier which makes it hard to really know what's wrong with your pet if you can't understand what the vet is saying!

I think Forest Hill Animal clinic is great. I don't live close to it but they have some wonderful and caring vets. The original doctor is an eye specialist (great for Shih Tzu) and is very experienced and caring. His son started a few years ago and he is so excited and such a keener. They also have a few other doctors - one of which also works at the Willowdale Animal Hospital (emergency hospital) - he is also wonderful.
I go to Seneca Animal Clinic or the Vaccination clinic for shots.
